      Skill Up I have to ask you how long would you recommend playing a game like Prey before sitting firm in an opinion of it? I've played the demo and didn't much care for it yet I respect and value your opinion . I have had it happen where I've played a game and my first opinion changed due to later events in the game . What say you on this about Prey?

    • @SkillUp
      @SkillUp  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think the demo would give you the measure of it. If the setting and initial systems didn't appeal, later hours probably won't change your mind.

      Skill Up while I did enjoy this version of prey I still want the bounty hunter prey that was supposed to be made. That said, you compared this dlc to my favorite game genre, deus ex, dishonored, splinter cell, etc. I watched the trailer and i'm..unsure. I had fun with prey and wanted to start over to go full alien but I just couldn't find the motivation to do it. That's why I'm conflicted about trying this dlc.

    No one is talking about it because Bethesda did zero marketing (outside of just announcing it). I didn't even know this DLC existed until today and I keep myself fairly up to date on games I like (and I loved Prey).

    No one is talking about it because right now in the gaming world hate is the only thing selling like crazy. I can't find analysis videos on these upcoming titles anymore, just "this games biggest problem" or "is this game dead? Heres why". My excitement for games is being compartmentalized and I got nowhere to turn to feel excited.

      Matthew Reed You are so right. I'm not going to name names but based on you comment I know who you are talking about. There are 4-5 negative youtubers who get hundreds of thousand views every video complaining about almost every publisher and new games. Negativity and cynism sell views.

      Earlier this year, I had to do a double take on my YT recommended because it was legit FILLED with click baity gloom and doom game "reviews," and it made me wanna quit playing video games. I'm soooooo glad I found Yong and Skillup (and the Gaymen laying over yonder) because this group of gamers was the refresher I needed to get excited about games again (ACG has been a constant for me thank God). Im hoping I get a rotation of game news so I can get a lot of different perspectives for full information.

      David Stadler Skillup and laymen gaming do the same thing too. Idk, personally I feel that this group of reviewers manage to highlight the pros and cons with an enthusiasm for games that's felt missing in the other channels I was watching. @@trblemayker5157 Yeah but pretty much exclusivly because they didnt market it in any way. Hell even the base game was undermarketed and they made the stupid decision to call it Prey instead of something like Neuroshock, just because they wanted to use an already existing IP.
      Because of that dumb decision lots of uninformed press and consumers just flocked it for being "too boring" and "clunky", because they thought Prey was supposed to be a horror first person shooter, instead of understand it on the merits of it being a immersive sim.
      All these stupid decisions are because of Bethesda Softworks, the publishing company that owns Arkane Studios.
      Now that Microsoft bought Zenimax Online, who own Bethesda Softworks, Microsoft will make sure to not be stupid enough to undermarket Arkanes new game.

      @@_--_--_ Well, they better release them on PC too and not just the box. I figured they would claim the rights to have some nice games for the Xbox lineup, but this isn't happening just yet. I am a PlayStation, Nintendo and PC guy, Xbox never interested me because it never had any games to play. As in exclusives. But one exclusive won't make me buy the console, however. This DLC was one of the best things that happened to both sim-like and rouge-like genres. And PREY itself was fantastic. They sticked the name because they didn't know what to do with the IP anymore. They bought the license to it, but never got around on making the game. So this was PREY, and to be honest, this was the better PREY we got before that. FAR better. Nothing beats space horror simulation with Synthwave music.

      miguel cobarrubias They could not just cherry pick controversial games to get views. I’m all for informing gamers of bad games and devs but they need to balance that content with videos like this, gameplay, etc. Give me some positive with the negative. When they just shit on games in every video, games that are being shit on by everyone else already, it’s obvious they are just doing it for monetization. It’s easy to complain in videos on TH-cam and viewers eat up controversy and love to get outraged.

    Bit of an advice: Once you unlock the Engineer, use her as your first character on each run! Maxing out her Repair skills while bringing some Recycler Charges to clear out radioactive hazards is VITAL for a clean run with the rest of the characters. The game tells you that she's not a good character for direct confrontation but it's honestly my fav character.
    To sum up, use Joan as much as you can during the first run: go through ALL areas and fix everything you can (doors, junctions, etc), and you'll have a well-balanced fighter who's clearing the path for all others.

    • @SomeOne-vf1rs
      @SomeOne-vf1rs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I played I’d either use her or the hacker first. And later on I’d use the Engineer last after I’d used all the other characters to gather everything on the map so I could have her recycle them with her as she has that neuromod that makes recycling a little more efficient and I’d try to get a few more neuromods that way. I also learned that if you buy a ton of grenades, and dismantle them all you get a lot of spare parts. After that you can shoot a control module and have it explode, then repair it which will give you a net profit of sim points if you’re feeling cheeky. I did this on level 5 to get a huge surplus of points to level up my characters and run through the map just destroying everything. Even when you’re cheesing the game it still feels satisfying - you’re reaping the rewards of your knowledge and that little progress you have between runs. You do one run to prepare for the next and you learn from what you saw in the previous one. I’m too tired to say this in a way that makes much sense, but mooncrash was a very fun experience. Feel like I should replay it soon honestly.

      @@flipsolo That was interesting comment indeed. Never though that was possible. That's flaw of many games though. They hold your hand and tell exactly what you can do. Some leave things for player to discover and some hint, but there lies the problem. Many to player seemingly trivial problem solving things just aren't there and then player gets bored to try things, assuming there aren't even many clever mechanics in the game. It's like I'm mechanic and there's tons off electronically locked doors. I've never seen door magnetic locks retain their locking position in case of power loss. But in games things virtually never work like this. Usually it's the exact opposite, power up and you can unlock door etc.

    Finished it, loved it, had a blast even after getting distracted by other games and coming back to Mooncrash to fall in love again.
    I love how the game was this ginormous, constantly evolving puzzle that kept shifting slightly after every run. Where sometimes you'd be all "I know where that is, I got this" and you get there and go "Oh. I didn't realize the place is on fire. WELP", or when you realize that certain items always spawn in the same place, allowing you so rush them for some guaranteed progress, etc. I also LOVE how every time you've JUST gotten used to the difficulty, the game cranks it up a notch and goes "Oh yeah, now some places in the base might not have oxygen. Also, Nightmares will spawn once in a while now, have fun with that!"
    I do have to say, though, I feel like I got supremely lucky with my final escape. I happened to complete The Director's story objective last and was like "What? That's it? That's the whole story objecti-....Ohhhh, this would have been REALLY useful to know a few hours ago!", then took a look at the sim, realized that the base was actually pretty low on hazards and that my corruption meter was still low, and decided to just bum rush the final escape, and aside from one single close call, I managed to pull it off perfectly basically on the fly with the knowledge I'd amassed.
    I do feel like you overstate the danger of the central crater by the end, though. With the propulsion jet (mandatory purchase for all characters after the first!), and the chipset that makes you hover faster with it, I was able to zip through the crater in minutes, and then bypass the typhon doors with a neat little trick. It was pretty dangerous during my last 2 characters, but that fun little trick I learned from the Director's story mission allowed me to deal with it with relative ease. There are a LOT of ways to "gotta go fast" the escapes relatively safely.
    Really though, I just want to see more games like this. Immersive sims in general, yes, but also immersive sims that feel like you're picking apart this giant puzzle, and where if you fail, the puzzle adjusts, throwing you for a loop on your next attempt. It's damn good, and I'm happy I picked this DLC up on day 1.

      Nah, the station is always the same. The situation changes on the station as the station goes bad. It makes quite a bit of sense. It's not random tilesets of generated rooms, its random loot, enemies, and hazards.
      It even gives the sim inside a sim plot point to dissolve the 4th wall that goes up when your characters repeatedly die. It's an immersive sim with roguelike elements. The soul of the DLC is very much Prey.

    Another neat part of Mooncrash is that the same type of loot respawns in the same location every time. This way you really get to know you way around the base, and you know where to go to find the things you need. Although Prey revisits areas, you mostly just run through them, and for that reason you don't feel at home or engaged in the same way that Mooncrash manages to pull it off.

  • @SinaelDOverom
    @SinaelDOverom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I went through the original game several times, each time with different builds, and thoroughly enjoyed all of it.
    I played and finished the DLC, and was only having fun on my first three or so runs, then it became a chore, and random elements were just not good enough to keep things fresh IMO. And since you have to finish the run with every character at least twice, that means that 7 runs out of 10 I was NOT having fun, but was just going through paces to finish the damn thing.
    The concept may be neat, but it overstays its welcome way too much.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I think people think WAY too highly of procedural generation as enough of a mechanic to provide variation. In reality you basically get a lot of the same stuff happening, with only minor details changing. I wouldn't call locking or unlocking a door a good enough variation for truly longterm replayability. The reason why in games like Binding of Isaac Afterbirth it works, has to do with a lot of the variation and change being with the character you play, the items you get and the way it influences gameplay directly. Prey has too little of that. By the time you've played each character in Mooncrash, the freshness of variety is pretty much gone. And not every character is equally fun to play, whereas Binding of Isaac allows you to effectively CHANGE your run, mid-run by picking up and using items. I would like to see games use that game design concept more.

    • @blindeyedblightmain3565
      @blindeyedblightmain3565 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nah, Mooncrash replayability is way better, in original game you will end up always as a jack of all trades, but here you are limited by time and class system. Plus, you still can and should explore Moonbase, but you will have to do right calls on right characters to do so.

      Personally my only major issue with the DLC is that they introduced a lot of cool ideas that didn't show up or get incorporated into the main game at all like repairing broken doorways, having turrets be repair by operator among other things. Everything else, i feel is minor in comparison considering how this DLC was probably a small prototype of things to come.

    The more i watch your review the more feels like you're talking about a different game instead of the one i played.
    Disclaimer, i loved Prey, but i found mooncrash a tedious experience at best:
    1) Credits: I have no idea of what you're saying about managing your funds, the game litterally showers you with them, making you able to unlock an huge chunk of upgrades (all the useful ones for sure like hacking and inventory expansions) in 3-4 runs max by just buying neuromods at the start of every run.
    2) Roguelike mechanics: Those are EXTREMELY restrictive. Since every chara has specializations you are forced to play every run in a specific order to grant more choices for the next chara, the engineer is the only one that can hack areas so 99.9% of the times you HAVE to start with her if you want access to some areas with the other chara, which often is a must if you want to be able to escape with everyone, since every escape can only be used once, plus as you said she can take down the shark pretty easily removing him for the others too...
    3) "A to B": Ye there is no A to B decision, there is only A: engineer does all the job by opening up varius areas and locating all the escape routes AND B: make all the others escape and don't worry about the loot since after some runs you can pretty much stock up billions of ammo, medpacks, armor and psy boosters at the beginning of the area due your infinite budget.
    So ye, tedious at best.
    This is just my opinion and respect the fact that you love it so much, as i said at the beginning it feels like we played 2 different games...

    You make it seem like Mooncrash is the best game ever. I dunno, I thought it's great for like 5 hours, and then I was bored out of my mind. It's even more repetitive and stale than base game. It retains every single issue with base game. Procedural generation doesn't make walkthroughs feel different, sure it makes them technically BE different, but they feel identical. And changes that you get from progressing the plot aren't any substantial either, they become annoyances real real fast. Progression pushes player from what made Prey good into what made Prey bad. Overall it just good, but not that good to tell people about it, because they probably won't enjoy it as much as you do and you know exactly why. It's that game that even if it's really fun for you - chances are people won't like it.

    I gave Mooncrash a chance, because the first time I didn't understand it and found it very difficult. And today returning to DLC and understanding it and focusing and finalizing it, OMG, Mooncrash is just brilliant and an underrated work of art! Your video is great because it recognizes all the good points etc. behind this MAGNIFICENT DLC!

    I'm thinking, Deathloop is just about to release. I wonder if Deathloop will be the spiritual successor to Mooncrash.

    nobody is talking about, because Bethesda is the middle of a downfall. And whatever this DLC brings its completely destroyed with whatever else Bethesda is doing.

      Oh Man come on , people dont care about the fact that this game is published by bethesda, look at the success of doom and the excitement on doom eternal, its Just the lack of interest for immersive sim that is causing this
      Which is a shame by the way

      @@fatalmokrane sure they dont, which is exactly why this video exists. Since this DLC was completely ignored just like the base game itself was. Goes to show you, when you fuck up, even the few stuff you or your sub studios do good will end up getting effected. Doom will sell, but not because of Bethesda, because the game has remained on the same studio since the first Doom in the 90's ID Software. But even then, we are yet to know if Doom will be released on Bethesda's own platform. So it could fail not because of the game itself, but because of the annoying stuff coming with it.

    I've been toying with getting Prey for the past few weeks for a number of reasons. Mooncrash may have decided things.
    Thanks for the upload.

      @John Marston Thanks for your reply. I played through a good amount of the demo. didn't unlock (find) any Circuits, Scopes, or suit mods. Only 3 neuromods. It seems Extremely clever and unique in its game system mechanics and sense of Agency. Something I've had an itch for.

    Bought Prey on a summer sale off steam for about $25. I started playing it over my December work break. Can not put the thing down. I want to explore every nook and cranny. 36 hours into the game and I think I am only 1/2 through. I keep backtracking looking for things I missed. I loved it so much I bought mooncrash during the winter sale.

    Haven't played much Mooncrash yet, but one thing is really cool. It essentially also makes player to test those mimic skills too. Meaning I always play the games as "good guy" as let's face it, it's generally speaking the only so-to-say good ending method. Now I'm usually getting enough of the game in first playthrough and I might re-try game for hour or two with "bad guy", but I can't recall game I've bothered to complete again fully. Moncrash cleverly throws those skills for us "good guys" apparently. Also character classes is great thing as it forces to use those other skills you likely haven't focused in main game. Brilliant idea!

    Rewatching this review in 2020, I'm struck by how much I see of Mooncrash in the forthcoming Deathloop, which is a Dishonored-like immersive action sim about experimenting and planning until you can execute the perfect time loop in which you assassinate all of your targets in one go. I think your prediction that Arkane would build on this design was spot on.
