that video was soooo well put together i loved how you showed us the procedure on the part outside of the car then switched back to when the part was still on the car for us visual minded folk
so i took it upon myself to swap my trans in my 95' 318i . . . unfortunately my 2nd and 3rd gear gave out so i bought a used one and i dont think i would be able to even attempt it without this video...i have searched and searched on youtube on how to diy but this video by far has been the best one i had came accross... only difference is mine is a automatic, so there where a few different steps i didnt need to do as well as different size bolts....nothing major,....you saved me lots of money and frustration on how to actually do it...your a life saver !
My Z3 work went excellent. Now ready to do the same on my E36 M3 and reviewing videos, always appreciative of how well your videos are. We really appreciate the detail, good camera angles, and sequential order in which you show the procedures. Thank you very much and keep up the good work !
amazing work! cant believe you removed this transmission all by yourself! keep up the good work i love watching your videos late at night in my room by myself
Bruh! Best video I have seen on this. Great editing and right to the point. I also have an E36 w some rust and I’m surprised you did not use any penetrant fluid. Dropped that transmission like a boss!
yo this video is actually done so well, the filming positions on everything was perfect and its so clear on how to do it. this actually gave me so much moe confidence if I ever have to take my trans out so thanks
You have helped me to get mine out my 323i very organized and helpful I got mine out with last part especially with the shims that need removing in order to get my trans out and I got the shit show of work to do will be looking at your clutch removal and do you have flywheel replacement cause im adding a dual mass direct me to right video please han
You should retitle this video "BMW e36 Transmission Removal DIY" As pretty much all e36's are setup the same and the video would be search engine optimized. Excellent video, literally the best out there it it's category.
Nice, thanks for sharing! I am about to have to figure out what to do about my transmission, sounds like throw out bearing is starting to fail on me and I know it doesnt like to stay in 2nd, so its time to pull the trans out.
Great video mate! I have to remove mine tomorrow, but I was thinking, can I put the E46's 6-spd transmission in there instead of the 5 spd? It's a '97 320i.
yea, you have to readjust the input shaft. seems like the teeth are not aligned which is why its not going in all the way. Did you not get the plastic teeth adjuster for it? It usually comes with the clutch.
Thank you Han. I think my rear main seal is leaking oil. I'm getting oil leak at trans and motor. Been waiting for a video from you. Also I'm having major vibration from my driveshaft. no play on driveshaft when i move it.
+Mazda Rx7 FD 1993 hmmm have you taken off your drive shaft recently? Or swap out your differential bushings? I had a problem when I swapped out my differential bushing. The front bushings weren't aligned and the drive shaft vibrated violently
Diff bushing is original. Just started vibrations. I hear clunking sound when i reverse. But vibrating between 2-3k rpm the most on each gear. When I'm driving and press down on the clutch cruising on hwy the car stops vibrating. Then I'll go back in gear and car vibrate again. ... flex disc and center bearing looks good no cracks or play. I'm confused
You are my hero, seriously! I’m trying to swap my 1.8 for a 2.8 but I couldn’t figure out which bolts I was missing. You have the best step by step approach for e36 videos that I’ve seen on TH-cam. I can’t imagine how much time and effort it must have taken to record and edit the whole thing, thank you! From some of the reinforced bits it looks like you track or auto-x the m3, what events do you run?
Xena Altair Glad this video was able to help you :) Time flys when you are doing what you love ha! I live in east coast so not too many events but I am planning on going to tracks in Pennsylvania once Im done with this M3(Need a new engine :/ )
Thanks man I've removed a trans with out a video once. This is the most in depth video I could ask for. The sizes of the wrenches is the best idea ever THANK YOU.
Genesislights it has to be high enough for you to fit underneath. You dont have to pull the transmission out all the way. I have my floor jack that lifts up to 19inchs off the floor and and i added wooden blocks to lift up even higher. If you dont need to take out the transmission you dont have to lift higher than 20inches off the floor
Will be doing a tranny swap and contemplating if jack stands alone would be high enough. Do you recall how tall the bell housing was? hanks for the reply
Really nice job. I need to do this cause I have the 5th gear lean. But give you props for doing it solo. Gotta have a lot of patience to be under that car doing that shit. Subscribed. Keep the e36 videos coming.
Jacob T To give myself more room to work with I wanted to loosen the subframe to lower the transmission a bit. And just for safety reasons I got the engine support bar
let me ask you, I am looking to install a shifter kit on my Z3 (E36) instructions say to 'lower the transmission a little", well it is still connected to the engine, when you remove the transmission support bracket, does it drop at least an inch? which would give me enough space, or do I need to unbolt from the engine and or drop the engine as well. I suspect the engine mounts give a little but want to check with you since you did it.
Great video! You've really gone into a lot of detail with this... helped me with my College assignment immensely. Perfect Step-By-Step, just what i was after haha. Thanks :)
Well it looks like I’m fucked but cheers for the video bro! I feel like trying to drop my trans out is going to be a mission but this video is a great reference. Would anything be any different on a 325i? It’s manual but I’m just wondering if anything could be different lol
Because the E36 M3 is a long lasting vehicle with awesome performance and reliability. At this point in the car's life, clutches are coming due big time. My man Han here has clearly spelled out all the steps. Awesome video!
that video was soooo well put together

Awesome. Thank you for watching!!!
@@HansGarage Sure thing, quick question: Did you reuse the transmission bolts or get new ones?
I honestly don't remember. I think used new ones from different clutch set.
Great video. You are a brave soul to be removing that transmission wearing sandals!
Darth Volvo hahahaha thank you!
amazing work! cant believe you removed this transmission all by yourself! keep up the good work i love watching your videos late at night in my room by myself
I love you!
I’m doing a clutch on my 97 M3 Sedan next weekend. This is going to help out a lot! Thank you!
Bruh! Best video I have seen on this. Great editing and right to the point. I also have an E36 w some rust and I’m surprised you did not use any penetrant fluid. Dropped that transmission like a boss!
PB Blaster is mandatory on northern cars!
yo this video is actually done so well, the filming positions on everything was perfect and its so clear on how to do it. this actually gave me so much moe confidence if I ever have to take my trans out so thanks
that was in my opinion the best e36 transmission removal video ive seen! saw at least 10 vids... Great work!
Thank you!!!
That’s very impressive work. Your video is by far leaps and bounds better then some of the stuff you click on youtube. Keep it up!
awesome video, thanks, so I do not have to worry about the starter till after I take the tranny off I asume?

You inspired me to do this myself. Thanks
put yourself out there! Extremely rewarding for me to have done this job for myself :)
Never seen a m3 with more rust!
+Erik Engstrom east coast problems
seriously? I can show you
Lol!!!XD
never been to germany huh?
We are sooooo lucky in the south as far as rusty cars go. Believe it or not, there are actually E36s around here with 0 rust.
Great video mate!
I have to remove mine tomorrow, but I was thinking, can I put the E46's 6-spd transmission in there instead of the 5 spd? It's a '97 320i.
my e36 is stuck straight in gear im so bummed idk what going on i was power shifting thought cause it was cold
Any idea what to do if it gets stuck on the input shaft 🗿 I got all the torx bolts out on the casing but it doesnt seem to budge past an inch or so
yea, you have to readjust the input shaft. seems like the teeth are not aligned which is why its not going in all the way. Did you not get the plastic teeth adjuster for it? It usually comes with the clutch.
@@HansGarage oh no Im still removing it, Im not sure whats holding it, I have all ten bolts out
@@juniorrat17 oh did you remove the metal gasket? watch 17:42

Thank you Han. I think my rear main seal is leaking oil. I'm getting oil leak at trans and motor. Been waiting for a video from you. Also I'm having major vibration from my driveshaft. no play on driveshaft when i move it.
the drive shaft vibration most likely would be from old center bearing.
Yes it's in neutral. I push up on driveshaft an it feels solid no movement. Car vibrate like crazy when I'm in gear.

thanks i needed this video, may be attempting to do an auto to manual swap
does anyone know if this is the same process with both zf & getrag?
Hopefully you changed the rear main seal while the transmission was out.
Sure did
I don't comment often, but this video is perfection. You have a true talent for teaching and doing. Subscribed

my e36 leaking from my rear main seal. will you also show a video of replacing the rms. excellent videos by the way
Doing this on Monday! Great video.
This video deserves more views 👏🏾 🔥
You should make as many videos as possible on the e36 ha
Great video, thanks! AND you did it in flip flops which is even more awesome.

Mitchell Kelley Thank you!
Started mine earlier, snapped 5 of the 6 exhaust downpipe studs. How did you get yours out?
Gold Fish i had to torch them at my friends shop.... very annoying and I had to get used headers on ebay. Fairly cheap around 200-300dollara
Great video! Very informative and clear. Well done
Very nice video Han! About how long do you estimate it took you for removal and install?
If you are doing it by yourself, it give it like two or three days with breaks in between taking it easy
Great video! It was a big help! Starting mine today!

joe mo same engine. One of my friend money shifted...
HAN'S GARAGE nice
You're the best. Thanks for the tutorial it was just exactly what I needed!

so much rust :( i have a 1991 320 and no where near as rusty
COLATA which state do you live in?
Im from aus ahah, but obviously somewhere with much different climate conditions

takes some guts (or something else) to remove a transmission in flip flops!
