This was amazingly dense but concise. Glad to hear someone on anitube finally talk about gender in Rakugo beyond who gets to perform. Kikuhiko also once used “atashi” outside of a performance in one of the few inner dialogues in the show, which is important since in their mind, they don’t need to perform gender for anyone else except themselves.
Good vid, although I feel like Kikuhiko might be more of an exception, imo there is something to be said about Rakugo performers playing women characters having less to do with gender fluidity/wearing gender and more to do with only men being allowed to do rakugo. Although you hit on that in a way. But the overral point about the show is very true. Definitely one of my favorites, it pains me that I cant recommend it to my non anime loving friends since it's so obscure
Another good video, really enjoying your content. I respect you keeping your videos short and to the point instead of stretching them out to 10 minutes.
Thank you, this is excellent content, but... YOU REALLY NEED TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW THE NAMES OF THE PEOPLE AND CHARACTERS YOU'RE WRITING ABOUT ARE PRONOUNCED! IT'S KIKUHIKO
Hi, I absolutely loved your video! Actually, I found it while doing research on SGRS (a favourite anime and manga of mine), because I want to write a paper on it, within the scope of my Women’s Writing course in college. Your analysis was very pertinent, and exactly the type of content I would like to cite in my paper. So a) would you be okay with me quoting your video (with credits, of course)? And b) if you have the time, could you recommend some academic sources that might help me understand issues of gender, identity, and women’s writing, not necessarily on SGRS, but that could be applied to the anime (like you did with Judith Butler’s theories)? It would be a huge help!

fluffthoughts i never caught that. I think the way Miyo experiences gender is as interesting as Kiku

Can someone please tell me which episode kikuhiko was performing as a woman?
Excellent job! Simple vocabulary, short and understandable video and Judith Butler's theory on point!
Thank you!

I love your videos absolutely to death, but every time you roll the r's in a japanese word it gives me diarrhea
