    But it's even better!
    My main problem with the first season was how theatrical that scene felt. And it turns out it WAS theatrical. I WAS supposed to feel it wasn't realistic. I had to raise the score of S1 retrospectively.

    @YakoffShmirnoff 8 ปีที่แล้ว +110

    I always felt that the climax of the first season felt a little too poetic and whimsical, especially compared to the blunt nature of the rest of the show.... so when this reveal occurred, it blew my mind! Definitely one of the best twists in anime history!

    It's frustrating how the sole reasons people wont give this show a chance is because it has the tag josei and is done by studio deen.

    • @jorgob
      @jorgob 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Lately their shows have been a lot better especially as of last year, starting with rakugo and konosuba.

    • @randomusername3223
      @randomusername3223 8 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      No, that's actually not the reason, at least not for me, I didnt even know what Josei meant until i just looked it up... I think a lot of people are just not impressed by the setting. Im not gonna lie, Rakugo sounds like one of the most boring things ever to me. I know there's more to it than just Rakugo, which is why im definitely giving it a chance sooner or later, but its a key element of the series, which was a big turnoff for me.

    • @jorgob
      @jorgob 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I see this complaint more so from people who have at least tried watching the show and i understand its personal taste.

      you know what? i hate a people that keeps underestimated this studio (DEEN) after Fate/SN incident.

    • @randomusername3223
      @randomusername3223 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Can you blame them though? I mean sure, lately they made some pretty popular shows (rakugo, konosuba). But before that? Fate/SN was bad, and after that (2006) nothing truly memorable came up, for 10 years! Sure, higurashi is great, one of my favourite anime tbh, but even then look at that crappy animation. I know its from 2006, but there are so many other shows out there that came out in 2006 that look far better. I can't blame anyone for being sceptical when they see Studio Deen. Although I never avoided this Studio completely, its definitely never been a good selling point for an anime for me if I saw their name. But yeah, I'm looking out for them now, I hope they can keep that quality.

      Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood is a true Masterpiece
      Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu isn't!
      why?
      to be a true masterpiece you have to be both "artistic" and "well love"
      Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu isn't that famous

    Interesting that all the First Season felt like a "Rakugo" story than a straighfoward and conventional story. It's almost like the first season follow more the Kikuhiko's emotions than the "What could really happend". Rakugo Shinjuu is by far one of the best anime of this decade, a clear example that the anime is far from being bad as some people claim.

    • @TheKalluto
      @TheKalluto 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      OH SHIT, that makes even more sense if you consider the 2nd season with the focus on Yota because his rakugou is REMOVING HIMSELF from the story, thus being able to tell a piece of rakugou for what it truly is, without any emotions getting in the way, or simply put: the truth

  • @arizona_anime_fan
    @arizona_anime_fan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +214

    The problem this show has it's clearly intended for ADULTS. Most anime fans, regardless of their physical ages are not adults. So this show flies right past them. Rakugo is easily one of the greatest stories I've seen told in any medium in the past decade. But its not for everyone. Younger men and women, will find it dull or boring. And older men and women who are insecure in their tastes and unable to understand why others have different tastes from them will deride it (incorrectly) as pretentious; while herd followers will be uncomfortable watching anything "no one else" has seen.
    Shout out to UTS for another great video, thanks for taking a look at SGRS.

      Not most Animefans, just the mayority of Watchers. The big 3 are Action, Komedy and Romantic.
      Not even I recoment this show, just because how specific it if.

    • @esejsnake1503
      @esejsnake1503 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Ha! You are right. But also...not. I am definetely not an adult, not by any metric. But I am an opera fan, and thus like storytelling in any form. Good storytelling has worth for me. I love it. So Rakugo was the most profound, fascinating and also genuinely funny work of art for me. Even the description (which someone here called "the most boring thing ever") was enticing, and it really didn't describe one tenth of the greatness of this show.
      I actually like that the Rakugo performances are mostly not cut short, and I just love the brilliant way every story in there is told. But the viewer must be soneone who can be excited by such things, who has in his life been posessed at least once by that special kind of longing and euphoria that you get after a brilliant performance. Only then can this anime be understood as a whole.
      Sadly in this time and place these things are not appreciated anymore. Or am I wrong?

    SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 7: Another thing I want to add is that Kiku intially attempts to jump after miyokichi himself, but sukeroku then holds him back before he then jumps after her. Not sure if Kiku noticed it in that moment or not but Kiku being Kiku, I can't imagine him not noticing it.

    To people concerned about spoilers: there's a note 20 seconds into the video warning you about them, but I added giant arrows pointing to it since it was a tad small. Now you can't miss it. I've also changed the title and thumbnail of the video to something less spoilery (albeit, much more clickbaity). Hopefully, that clears things up.

    Speaking of the opening changes, it happens in the first season as well. The part where Miyokichi goes underwater, her face turns white and her hair changes to a purple/blue. On episode 10 and 12 her skin becomes pale and her hair remains black.

    Loved this show since it came out! here's a bonus fact in the story. Yakumo hid the truth from Konatsu cause she might feel guilt but as they grew older he started to actively make her hate him more because he began to realize that Konatsu was starting to have a crush on him. it's a bonus chapter to the final volume of the manga. (you also get to see Yakumo poke ghost sukeroku's nose in an attempt to make him speak hahahah)

    Shit, I'm only at episode 5 of season 2 because I've been traveling around Japan instead of watching anime, but videos about Rakugo Shinjuu always make me happy so I can't wait to watch it when I'm caught up.
    As an aside, I went to see a real series of rakugo performances (with a few other types of performances strewn throughout) in Asakusa the other day and I'd definitely recommend it to anybody that enjoys this show. My Japanese listening ability is pretty decent so I managed to follow along decently, but even if you can't understand the spoken stories it's worth it to just look at how the rakugoka move, many of whom were even more engaging and animated despite their seated position than anything you see in the show.
    There was even a real-life Joshiraku: 春風亭 ぴっかり who was absolutely fantastic.

    SPOILER ALERT, later in the series it reveals that the red eyes of sukeroku it's because he is a shinigami trying to take yakumo's life using the imagen of sukeroku. When you said about the red eyes, with that little detail everything starts to make sense. Great video

  • @Aldini_to
    @Aldini_to 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also noticed that shit was gonna happen when Shin's eyes appeared red in the opening that chapter, but the thing I would go far and say those are Shinigami's chapters (5 and 9), but didn't notice that the change in the disk where Miyokichi appeared was when Yota learns the truth, that's good attention to detail, great video, hope that you make another for the end of the series and mostly what are your conclusion to who is the father of Shin?.

    She got pregnant as a revenge and that's where her suffering started she no longer wanted that marriage so she left her husband and daughter but from what I recall she would send them money, she didn't like her husband performing rakugo because it reminds her of Kiko she loved his rakugo because he is a quite person but on the stage he talks alot but the whole thing made Sukeroku lazy and maybe (depressed?) sleeping all day and leaving everything to his young daughter. All this is so understandable to me yet people called her the B word missing all the realness in the anime

    I almost stopped watching this show because the characters felt super unrealistic by the end of the first season. This spoiler is exactly the motivation I needed to keep my enthusiasm going for the rest of it's runtime

      What does it pretend to be? And your own particular amusement is no argument though your opinion which is fine but no ground for discussion.
      So do you mind to explain why this show pretend to be something that it is not? If not, good day to you, sir/madam/*. Be well with your opinion but I oppose.

      "Pretentious" as in an undeserved sense of self-importance. The story isn't interesting (until season 2 turns everything upside down). The characters aren't interesting. (No character development - just that reversal in season 2.) And Rokugo doesn't translate to animation well. Maybe a Japanese audience could look past those elements because of the historical significance of the topic and maybe this story would work as a novel, where it could be fleshed out in a lot more detail, but right now it's just the hipster anime of the month.
