Came here after reading Akane Banashi. It's fantastic! You can really feel the different characters come out, what an awesome way of telling stories. Edit: Dang, I'm surprised by the amount of Akane Banashi fans here that had the same idea as me lol
I hope it is a manga that will have a long span and not get cancelled early on like most Jump series, hopefully just the audience will at least be invested enough to see what happens.
Came here after reading Akane-Banashi and I didn't expect rakugo to be this incredible and entertaining. I got fully immersed in the story! Awesome performance! thank you for translating.
I just finished watching Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, and I'm wondering if Rakugo is the reason why Seiyuus in Japan are so celebrated? A deep storytelling culture plus manga, another art form with deep history, combined in the new digital era to become anime.
Part of why I chose to translate a Rakugo performance for my final was because I'm a novice voice actor myself, so I definitely feel the parallels. I feel like there's an argument to be made that Japan's traditional performance culture has an emphasis on voice work (especially Rakugo and Bunraku puppet theater), which could have contributed to an environment where seiyuus could thrive. But Japan is also a country that tends to push cultural 'soft power' and the anime industry is a huge part of that, not to mention a multi-billion dollar industry, so without doing extensive research it's hard to say exactly how much Rakugo contributed to the celebration of Seiyuus.
dear poster, i expect a rise in viewership and engagement, as current akane-banashi chapter just introduced that this will be the next story, so excited to see shiguma's intensity!
Well guess authors of Akane Banashi and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu would be pretty happy if they visited this comment section. I too cam here after reading Akane and wanting to see what actual Rakugo is like and it is quite amazing, not gonna lie. Thanks for this video it was really enjoyable watch.
Yanagiya-san's delivery is award-worthy if he hasn't already been showered with enough praise in the rakugo world. I'm an English speaker, and I got mild chills listening to this. The shinigami voice were probably my favorite part.
Going down the rakugo rabbit hole as a mexican, from kenshi yonezu, to akane banashi, back to kenshi, into a random performance on youtube out of curiosity, only to end up Hearing what is probably an earlier version of the Clasic from Cine mexicano Movie "Macario" was a wiiiild trip, thanks
I've heard there are also some linguistic similarities between Japanese and Russian so maybe there were some historical exchanges between Japan and Eastern Europe in the past?
This particular rakugo story appears first in the late 1800s, and is believed to be based on a European folk tale, recorded by the Brothers Grimm as "Godfather Death". I would guess if that tale was present in Germany I would bet it was prevalent as a folktale throughout Europe in various forms.
As an American, I just discovered rakugo through the anime OddTaxi. They have a conversation about falling asleep to it and I, who listens to meditation sleep stories to fall asleep, had my interest PIQUED. This was the first video I clicked on and it is AMAZING. What an art form and the sheer power of captivation this man has is incredible. Thank you for uploading!
whoa i knew i got here primarily because of akane banashi but never thought the manga did capture the essence from real rakugo :0 really appreciate the translation my man!
Akane-banashi has been a main catalyst for why I am here. But I’m also a performer as well, seeing stuff like this makes my heart feel so full and makes me want to do it myself. Thank you so much for the good work!
since everyone in the comments is telling where they came from, i came from 'My Master has no Tail' This is the first real Rakugo performance i watched and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope i get to witness one in person one day
After initially reading the manga Akane Banashi I wanted to see Rakugoka live. I found this video first, and instantly fell in love with the art form, and it got me even more hooked on the manga. When I realized that Shiguma was telling this story, the amount of chills, happiness, and excitement I felt brought me back to this video. I'm beyond excited to see that I'm not the only one reading this great manga who came here! ❤
from Joshiraku, Kenshi Yonezu's Shinigami, And reading Akane-banashi. It leads me here. I'm really happy that there are a lot of people who appreciate a piece of culture that they're not that familiar with.
I watched this video years ago, and was fully pulled into the story. I was happy to see Akane's master do a version of this in the recent chapters of Akane Banashi.
Couldn't help but notice the similarities with the mexican book/movie "Macario". It's uncanny. Great work by the Rakugoka, it was a lot of fun to listen.
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu introduced me to rakugo years ago. Then I found out Kenshi Yonezu made a song inspired from Shinigami. Rakugo is a beautiful form of art.
Started reading Akane Banashi a month ago and was a bit confused... came here to YT and landed on this video. Was absolutely mesmerized by it! Went back to Akane manga and read it all. Today was my first time reading the weekly chapter on release date and I can't believe they're doing this story! Superb!
amazing! I came here after listening to Kenshi Yonezu's Shinigami and someone recommended watching the full performance to get a better understanding of the song, so glad I found this video! The translations are great and easy to understand 👍👍
Wow. I had heard the story before, but watching it be performed as intended... definitely a different experience. Amazing. The way his voice changes so completely is amazing. Almost makes me wanna learn Japanese. Thank you for translating of course! We wouldn't have been able to enjoy such an amazing performance without you!
I have discovered rakugo after watching Tiger & Dragon (amazing TV show from 2005). I love it and I want to become fluent in japanese as soon as possible so I can enjoy it without subtitles!
When I heard what rakugo is I thought it’d be boring since we have lots ot technological entertainment with lots of stimuli nowadays but this is surprisingly fun and could catch my attention throughout. I really enjoyed it, thank you for subbing and uploading.
I've been studying to become an English Rakugo performed, and my master wanted me to watch more Rakugo in Japanese (I'm still new to the language). Thank you so much for posting this!!
@@KingK1421 Pretty well! I’m up to 7 stories I can perform, and have been given the go-ahead to start looking for places where I can get some experience in front of a crowd
Like most of us here, after reading Akane Banashi, I got very curious about Rakugo. And boy oh boy, it really is wonderful. Very entertaining, and the talent it takes to be able do this, I am in awe of how hard this man must of worked to get to this level. It makes me fall in love with performance arts more and more, the art of conversation is indeed beautiful and fun, who would've thought!
Came here because of Descending stories: showa genroku rakugo shinju, I'm currently reading the manga. As soon as I finished it, I would like to watch the anime as well! His performance is spectacular! I like the way he changes his voice to a diff character, it's really convincing
This is super cool. I don't know a lot about Rakugo but was seeing some chatter about it and looked into it a bit, and someone linked me this video. Fantastic storytelling here.
Like most others, I came here after “Shinigami” by Kenshi Yonezu, but I only knew of rakugo after Akane Banashi. As always, I’m blown away by the beauty of rakugo. I love this story so much. It’s amazing how one person can convey so much.
Pretty sure no one else has said this in the comments, but I came here from Ace Attorney! I'm playing case 6-4 right now and wanted to find out more about rakugo, it's fascinating!
As some other people have already said, I came here after listening to Kenshi Yonezu's Shinigami since I was very interested in the story behind the song and I really enjoyed this! The actor was so expressive that I really could immerse myself in what was happening. Thanks for the subs! Now I love the song even more ahah

Absolutely stunning performance. It's hard to find storytellers this good in English that aren't just reading children's books.

This man is a living legend. Incredible story telling, I can’t imagine how long it took him to master
I'm genuinely blown away, when I looked up rakugo I didn't expect to actually feel like there were multiple people on stage telling this story
Here after the Akane Banashi Chapter, Shiguma is about to put on a master class. The story has only just begun.
That's so wild! In Ukrainian folklore there's also a trope of the grim reaper who either sits at the feet or the head of a sick person's bed.
I've heard there are also some linguistic similarities between Japanese and Russian so maybe there were some historical exchanges between Japan and Eastern Europe in the past?
There is probably no connection, but the things that humans come up with are ultimately the same.
