Correction! That happened to one of Kazuki's friends, not Kazuki himself. Kazuki was mad when he heard the story, but he thought the guy would make a good character.

To be honest, a jerky player can sometimes be necessary in a games ecosystem. They drive others to be better and invest in their game more intently, intensely, and passionately.
I think Takahashi was humble enough to see that charm. Which is partially why the concept of Kaiba was compelling. If you look throughout the series. You can see that idea translate through Yugi and Seto's relationship. Yugi, despite all of Kaibas ego and disrespect? He wants to help Seto and always shows him appreciation and kindness.
It also makes sense because over time, we all grow to love Kaiba for the reason, BUT because underneath all that animosity? He's a passionate player with standards and actual skills and has a good heart despite his hard shell of a personality.
We all learned that Kaiba is just hardened and struggles in ways only someone is talented and highly-driven normally would. (Hence why him and Vegeta are two favorite character foils to their respective protags.)

YuGiOh was the anime I ever watched. I remember being 7 years old at my cousin’s place. He got up before me to watch it and then I joined him… it was the episode of Marik Vs Yugi. I then watched the whole 224 episode Anime at 16. Love it.. my favourite anime. RIP Kazuki Takashi❤

Takahashi always loved writing characters that you wouldnt usually like. Joey was a bully to yugi but ends up being amazing friends with him. His writing style was always about overcoming your ideas about people to work towards your individual and group goals.

Any can turn lemons into lemonade, but Takshashi made literal gold from a jerk.
Kaiba's character arc is on par with Vegeta. They both start out as total psychopaths who are willing to kill just to prove they're the best, sometimes using cheap tricks, but eventually the protagonist helps them become better people and begrudgingly accepting that they're friends. They both also have something of a relapse that doesn't last very long.

I've always said, a rival shouldn't just be a friend. A rival needs to motivate you to be better, draw out your inner fighter, stuff like that. Pokemon lost the edge a good rival needs.
