    Im 54. (Sighs).
Where's the time go? Seems like yesterday i was with my exbf cruising around town, listening to this song.
I miss my friend. Time has a very bad habit of separating from the ones we love.
If only we could go back 😢

40 years old in 2024. This video reminds me of the good old days without social media, just quiet afternoons with my guitar and great music. Sad how they don’t make music like this anymore.

My infantry unit was sent to the Horn of Africa in 2003, just after a tour in Afghanistan. We were in some camp with a French name and a bunch of Legionnaires. This band, dude...they flew out from the States to play for us. Where we were my dudes, was not safe at all. The band is crazy. There I am in the Camp French cantina, having a Heineken, watching Collective Soul play live to maybe a couple hundred Marines and Legionnaires. They played everything, a full set. If they were nervous, they didn't show it. It's one of the fondest memories I have from the time and in a sea of bad memories. The Marine Corps has two bands as far as I'm concerned, and these cats are one of them. Total class.

It was November 1995. I was 15 and this song had just released as a single. I was in Wal-mart (before the super walmarts) with my mom when saw the single on cassette and asked her to buy it for me. I remember so vividly listing to it on the way home in the 1991 chevy S-10 while looking out at the over cast November sky. I know this isn't some profound memory but it's still one I am very fond of. This song always takes me back to that time. The 90's were awesome. Anytime I play I gig, I make sure I cover this song using my 12 string.

Any memory evoked with such emotion after that many years is profound. Our memories are our stories about who we are. This is a lovely moment and it gave me joy, thank you for sharing.
Edited to say I was 24 in 1995 and suicidal. I remember seeing the video and sob/laughing along with the actor when the bird landed on him as he prepared to jump. The absurdity of the world and the longing in the singer's voice helped me get perspective, if only for one little moment. And I've been able to hold on to that for 25 years of building little moments to stop me from falling.

It's kind of funny. You see a million comments like this on various songs from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's... even the early 2000's. And then it just stops.
And if you look at the hard numbers, year by year since then, the suicide rate in this country has just slowly risen and risen and risen. And we blame society and we blame bullying and we blame all sorts of boogymen, but they're boogymen that ALWAYS EXISTED.
Maybe the reason kids are killing themselves is because the music went to utter shit, and that feeling that we got when we were 16 and sad that SOMEBODY UNDERSTOOD WHAT WE WERE GOING THROUGH isn't there for these kids now.

I saw them roughly 20 years ago at an outside venue. It started to rain, so a lot of people attending moved away from the stage to the covered area. Not me - I stayed close to the stage and danced and sang with the real fans and didn't mind getting soaked. The band played an encore, despite joking about their risk of electrocution, because they appreciated our enthusiasm! It was a great concert - what an awesome band!

They have gained some recognition recently and their ticket sales have gone up in price. I saw them in Cleveland at a standing room only joint. We had a VIP high table of 4 with a waitress, for $50 a person. We sat right next to the sound man, he was rockin and dancin all nigh, the band is out of this world. I have seen them every year since.

    Has our conscience shown?
    Has the sweet breeze blown?
    Has all the kindness gone?
    Hope still lingers on
I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City
    And I don't know why
    Are we listening
    Hymns of offering?
    Have we eyes to see
    That love is gathering?
All the words that I've been reading
Have now started the act of bleeding
    Into one, into one
So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
    To see my world below
    And I laugh at myself
    While the tears roll down
'Cause it's the world I know
Oh it's the world I know
I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City
And I don't know why, don't know why
So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
    To see my world below
    And I laugh at myself

'Cause it's the world I know
Oh it's the world I know
So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge

Collective Soul has been one of my favorite bands. I discovered them with Shine. My uncle recorded the song off the radio on a blank cassette tape when I was a kid in the 90's and I ended up wearing the tape out from playing it so much. I've enjoyed all the albums that they've put out, their music really hits home for me. Got to see them in concert a few years ago and I was so filled with emotion from hearing them live. Tears streaming down my face singing along to the songs that they played. I really wish they would tour solo again and not share the stage with other acts (or at least be the main act and play longer than the short time they do). I would love to see them in full concert again...

They fell in love with my country. They came back one year after to play at the city of Arequipa for its anniversary in front of 30,000 people and the crowd loved them.

@@mat11trick Funny how music like this can have a timeless message and the message always emerges in times of need. Look at NY, all the crisis over there, and here you have a song with a strong message about helping each other and being positive. The message can easily be applied to any city in the world because the world needs to be strong now. After many years of having left the strings behind, I'll pick my guitar again. I need to play this song and any other that can send good vibes to my friends and relatives.

@Debra Jones I watched a Live concert video the other day (Live, the american 90's band) and the crowd was so full of youngsters. I thought well that's great, but then I also noted that there were many older people. Thing was, the guys from our generation had brought their teen children over to the gig so they can enjoy what a good rock concert sounds like. Watching that was heart warming and kind of sad at the same time. We've grown old, but we enjoyed the best times of rock music. Just like the great Robbie Williams said onstage: "Get old with me!!" Hahaha.

    • @DaarkDestiny
      @DaarkDestiny 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'll bet Peru is so beautiful ❤️ I grew up listening to rock. This was one of my favorites, though I was only 9 when it came out, I was born in December of 1985. And my mother was stuck in the 80's and loved the 90's. Not the Ricky Martin part of the late 90's. But the early and mid 90's. When rock was still amazing, and so many fresh faced bands were passionate about life and figuring it all out! Bands like Live, Candle Box, REM, Dishwalla, 4 Non-Blondes, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Goo Goo Dolls, Sound Garden, and so many others I wish I could name them all lol. It was an amazing time to be a child and growing up hearing these bands so much so, that it not only shaped my tastes in music, but shaped me as a human being. I've always been such a sensitive person who cares about my own integrity, and how I feel about myself, my ideals, my standards, and how I reflect what I take in back into the world. And I think a lot of people who were raised on superficial music that didn't have real meaning, but was catchy, are like that type of music. They have no real substance, they're cool to party with, but flee when shit gets rough. They're fair weather friends. But I am a friend through it all. I'll hurt with you, share your happiness and your defeat. I'll uplift you when you need to be reminded of your value, remind you to be humble when you're on top of the world, I'll weather the storm beside you and help you rebuild when it's over. When I love, I mean it and don't give up easily. And when I'm done, I'm gone forever!

It was before I met her... my first love. I worked in my first restaurant in South Florida where I spent half my childhood at. It would play religiously almost every night of work and boy... It moved me. It plucked a ton of different strings that hold me together.
fast forward many years and finally after over 21 years behind the bar have been over, this song still strikes every chord that it originally did. now I am in a rebuilding phase of my life. It means that much more just listening to this again. I am happy I have found this again. It is helping each an everyday in this rebuilding process...
to her, the first that changed everything in my life... if you run into this song and this comment, just remember the first night we both listened to this. As much as life took us on our own paths and lines, take in this song again and build the strength to push forward as well as I have.
