Janine, I wish to extend to you and your family my deepest sympathy. So glad you were able to spend the last years very close to her. Take care and speak often of her as it helps with the healing.
Sorry to hear about your Mum passing, you spoke of her so beautifully. I loved hearing your tale of Brownies, I laughed out loud at your adulting badge ❤ Look forward to your finished french jacket. Sending love x
Thank you so much, Alison. Adulting badge - I just today was looking at Urban Threads embroidery designs and they have sewing badges. Maybe time to make another top.
I so enjoyed this video. I look forward to your videos and had a bad feeling when you skipped a week. Your tribute to your mother is just what I would anticipate from you- composed, kind and thoughtful. A centenarian in Calgary! An accomplished woman, surely, as are you. Your courage and fortitude are inspiring. And now, I can’t wait to see what you’ve done with your French jacket!😊
My apologies for the slow reply. Thank you so much for your kind words. ❤️ We were so happy that she was able to pass that century mark. She received the standard greetings from all the dignitaries including the King, and a really lovely personal letter from the Mayor. She got a kick out of that!
Janine, my condolences to you and your family on the passing of your mom. What a lovely tribute you gave to her. Looking forward to seeing your finished jacket and your t-shirt is perfect with all your badges.
It seems like we can never be ready to lose a loved one. My Mom passed away in 2018 of cancer. We knew her time was short. Yet, I still felt caught off guard. Take care of yourself, I'll be praying for you and your family.
So sorry to hear about your mom, Janine. You gave a beautiful tribute to her. She sounds like she was a wonderful and noble lady. May your good memories of her bring you much comfort. I enjoyed the badge t-shirt. You looked nice in it, and yes, what a conversation piece! Glad you're feeling better!
Today is the first anniversary of my Mother's passing, so my heart goes out to you. I miss her every day! My sympathy to you and your family and may God bless you.
Hi Janine, as always a lovely vlog, what a win the fitting workshop was, looking forwards to seeing the finished jacket, sorry to hear about the loss of your mother, like you I was lucky to have had my mother into my 60’s, strangely I struggled with the loss, I inherited her sewing treasures, it took me many months until I could open them, lots of buttons with small pieces of fabrics attached to them, from an era where everything was recycled, from those small buttons and scraps I could recall the garments she had made for us, like you recalling my mother sewing late in to the night, clothes for us to wear. Thank you for taking the time to share. My condolences for your loss.
Thank you so much, Debra ❤️ There is no 'easier' time to lose a parent. It stings at odd times. I hope that your mom's special sewing treasures bring you happy memories and not just sadness.
What a beautiful tribute to your mom! My mom died over 12 years ago. There is rarely a day goes by that i don't think of her and also my dad. They both encouraged my sewing as a young child, and were proud of the adult i became. They were so supportive of me and my three sisters. Brownies! My friend and i weren't allowed in the same group! Luckily, as i was quite shy, I was with my older, more social sister. I loved getting badges! My best friend and i joined Guides together and hated it. I think your jacket is going to be a staple in your wardrobe, everyone will want to know where you bought it. I'm trying to imagine the trim you will choose. I'm quite envious of your wide choice of fabric stores to visit. Unless i travel to Toronto or Hamilton, my store choices are Fabricland, Lens Mills, or better still, my own fabric stash. This week i want to make a pink lightweight turtleneck top, and light blue chambray, granny square accented topper to wear to my retirement tea party amazing coworkers are hosting for me next Saturday.
Jennett, thanks so much for your kind words. I know it's taken me a while to catch up on comments and so appreciate you always posting ❤️ How wonderful that you have loving memories of both your mom and dad! There's nothing like knowing that your parents were proud of you. So you and your friend were little troublemakers, too? 🤣 I'm so glad we grew up in a time when we kids could be silly and get into a bit of trouble.
My mom passed unexpectedly in May and it certainly is busy dealing with the estate. We've been going through boxes of photos and videos and costumes from when her family of origin ran a dance studio. That has been so much fun to keep us going through a sad and stressful time. Sewing has helped me in the meditation of fully engaging ones mind. So glad at the end of a stressful couple of days to enter my sewing space and be immersed in creative process and problem solving. Your jacket is a great project for that plus it has provided you with a social circle too. Its going to be awesome when its completed. I look forward to the reveal.
Nancy, your mom hasn't been gone long. I'm so sorry. ❤️ My sisters are bearing the brunt of dealing with mom's belongings while I handle the estate, so I think I wound up with the less emotional piece. But I do really crave and need the quiet, undisturbed time in the sewing room. It certainly helps to process everything that we have to deal with. x
What a wonderful story your mother's life must have been. I lost my mother 2 yrs ago at 92 yrs old. So thankful that we had our mothers with us for so long. May your warm memories of her comfort you in the days ahead.
Always lovely to have a catch-up with your …so glad you have a treasure trove of memories and strength from your mum. I find it fabulous how you refer to a certain online forum…I recall both of those contests and loved both of your entries. I bought the Vernon but not the Harrison..I was intimidated by the double princess seams…and now that we are back in Florida, I’ve pretty much determined I don’t like long sleeves. Or most button up shirts. I am exploring lots of other styles, but that Harrison still catches my eye, dang nab it. Maybe someday. Must have been fab working with Ron…I also have been watching some of the Power Sewing Sandra and Ron have been posting: what a catalog! I do hope your illness is completely in the rear view so you can press on with your jacket, and plans for frocktails. May all your efforts lead to more badges, whether you physically make them or not. Life is the collection of items and memories you choose to carry with you on your way. “See” you soon… Chris in Florida.
😁 Chris, I still lurk occasionally but am glad that I decided to consolidate my online life a bit. Ron is such a kind soul. He has so much patience. I loved working with him. I asked him if he was going to be teaching in the States again and it sounds like he will be at the ASG convention in the summer and that's about it. How about a sleeveless Harrison shirt?
Oh my goodness you made me laugh with your girl guide story! Love the tee. I’m actually planning to use that pattern for the first time next month. How fun that you got some help from an « expert » on fitting your French jacket. I cannot wait to see it all done; should be amazing! Your mom sounds like an amazing woman. I’m so sorry for your loss. 💞
Such a beautiful tribute to your Mom Janine. I feel like our mothers could have been good friends! My Mom has been gone 4 years now. I miss her everyday and am grateful for her life and for her influence on mine. Peace be with you as you celebrate her life!💕💕
I love your tshirt !!! As a fellow brownie I recognized the theme... well done... love the adulting badge !!! I too am on my Harrison journey... so sorry you lost your mom... sounds like she was a wonderful parent n role model... take care of yourself... your jacket will be lovely !!!
Oh Janine I’m so sorry for your loss, you are right in that even when it is expected it isn’t any easier. I recently lost my 82 yr old father to ALS and even though I know he is in a much better place it is still hard to walk through the loss. I’m looking forward to seeing your finished French jacket - I was fortunate enough to take a class with Ron several years ago and still implement some of the techniques he taught- how lucky are you to have been able to spend three days with him!
So, who is this magical “Daphne” person and why isn’t she sharing her super powers with us 🧐? I’ll be looking forward to seeing that jacket. I haven’t attempted anything like that because I just don’t feel confident in my fitting abilities, I need to find some workshops like the one you went to. Cute kitty 🐈⬛ . That tee shirt is fantastic. I’m so sorry for the loss of your Mother. I’m glad you can celebrate her life and take comfort in that.
Jan, my apologies for the slow reply. Thank you so much for your kind words. ❤️ Daphne is a real gem. She helped several people fit their jackets. I'll tell her that she needs to hire herself out 😁 For her fitting, she paid for about 90 minutes of time with a sewing teacher. She said it was invaluable! None of us had considered that before so it's definitely an option for fitting if we don't know anyone who can help.
Sorry to hear about you losing your wonderful Mother. She taught you so much about living a good life. I laughed out loud about you being too disruptive to move on in your group. I believe you were just too chatty and full for life and your group leader didn't appreciate that. Your jacket construction reminded me of a tailoring class I took long ago. I still have the jacket. Can't part with it because I put so much time into it. I pulled it out of the back of my closet and was surprised at what a good job I did. Wish it still fit!!! Happy Sewing!!
Hi Janine, I loved your tribute to your mother. We should all have such wonderful memories. This French Jacket seems to be taking on a life of it's own. I look forward to the finished product. Earlier in January I had mentioned my goal of making small quilts for donation so that I can clear my sewing room of a lot of fabric. So far, I have made 4 tops, but haven't added the backing. February should end with me having 4 finished quilts, and a better idea of just how much fabric I can use up. I am keeping my head down and staying off the fabric sites!
Sandra, my apologies for the slow reply. Thank you so much for your kind words. ❤️ How are you doing with your quilts? Did you manage to apply the backing?
Hi Janine, I quilted and bound 2 quilts and sent them to a woman who will be in charge of donating them. Being a creative sort, I made patchwork backings for them. I still need to quilt the other two, but I decided to reward myself by making a Marlo Sweater by True Bias.@@JanineSews
You and I share so much and sadly the latest is the passing of our mothers. My mom lived with me for two years before she went to Heaven at the age of 94. You and I had what so many children nowadays don’t have, devoted mothers. My mom has been gone a few months but her memory is everywhere and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Her name is Nancy.
What a lovely vlog Janine. Fab tribute to your mum. I lost my mum and brother a few weeks apart last summer, both with dementia and having to do all the associated admin work etc. So I can imagine what you probably have on your plate now. Thank goodness your sewjo hasn’t been affected. I loved the brownies story and your top, complete with all those badges. How original and what a great challenge. Cashmerette club have just produced a dress sloper pattern and a good video from Jenny, which is really useful. There’s going to be a 2nd video about fitting it I believe. I love the lining you have for your jacket!
My apologies for the very slow reply and thank you so much for your kind words. ❤️ I'm so very sorry about your mum and brother. It must have been devastating for you. Dementia is a cruel disease that takes our loved ones away from us a second at a time. And yes, I've taken on the admin work. It's not too difficult but everything takes time. I have signed up for the sloper class on Cashmerette! Are you going to give it a try?
My mom is 93. She lives alone and drives. She sews and paints. Your mother sounds like a wonderful woman. I wish we all had moms who taught us to sew! God bless you, Janine. ❤️ ~Nancy
Best to you and your family during this difficult time. Loved hearing about your Mum’s life. Thanks for sharing. On a more fun note, adore your girl guide badge shirt. The Canadian version is wonderful. How about making one to pay homage to your time in the States? You surely earned many patches for your time in the US!
Thank you so much for your kind words. I have thought about making another t-shirt. Just today I discovered that Urban Threads sells embroidery patterns for sewing badges! I think my U.S. top would have a lot of wine - lol.
Deepest sympathy to you and your family Janine, Mums are in our hearts forever. Looking forward to seeing your jacket evolve. I was a Brownie and Girl Guide in Australia and loved earning badges so I love your shirt.❤
sending you a big hug, Janine ♥ your mom sounds like an awesome lady~ so very, very sorry for your loss. The french jacket is going to be amazing- I can't wait to see it!
What a wonderful mother you had! Her influences will remain with you forever. Cherish all those memories ❤. On a lighter note, I adore your special t-shirt, wear it proudly. Your jacket is coming along beautifully, excited to see the finished project. I don’t recall if you are a Cashmerette member or not but this months pattern is a dress sloper. I’m very excited about it. Their patterns fit me well with the least amount of adjustments, except for height at 5’2”.
Thanks, Donna.❤️ I am a club member and saw the sloper. Part of me thinks that the days of dresses for dressing 'up' are done but I wondered if it would be helpful for tops, or for a top and skirt. It will probably be a good learning project!
A beautiful video re your amazing mom. What a story, and how wonderful that you had a person like that in your life. I love your badges top, and find it hilarious that they asked you not to join Girl Guides.. Their loss!! Snd they couldn't handle a couple of spirited children? They just didn't now how to keep up with you :)
Love your tribute to your mother. As my Dutch husband says “you are in the first person now”, and that’s a strange feeling. We never quit missing them.
I hadn't heard that saying before, Barbara. It's certainly true and I know a lot of us are at that age where we've lost people who have always been present.
So sorry for your loss, its wonderful you had all those years with her. Ron Collins got his start with Sandra Betzina. TH-cam has recently (I believe) made the old programs they did together available - called “Power Sewing WebTV”. A real treasure trove of information! I wish I lived closer to Calgary, it seems you an active sewing community.
Thank you, Sheena ❤️ I just discovered the Power Sewing channel here on TH-cam! Looks like there is a lot of good info there. I'm going to add the link to the video description here. We do have a vibrant sewing community but what has surprised me is that there are so many groups and classes that don't seem to promote themselves. I suspect it's the same thing in other places.
@@JanineSews I live just outside of Edmonton, we have an active quilting community but I have not yet discovered a sewing group. I do really enjoy your channel.
Janine, so very sad to learn about your Mom, what a beautiful life. Sure you will treasure your memories. I can hardly wait to see you chanel jacket. Stay warm.
So sorry to hear about your mother. Sending prayers. I have a little disruptive granddaughter. Got herself exspelled from preschool. There is hope though. She just got citizenship award in kindergarten.
Janine, sending sympathies at the demise of your mother. She sounds as though she was an inspiration and an amazing role model. How fortunate you are to have had her in your life for so long. Sending warm wishes in this challenging time
Dear Janine. So very sorry for the loss of your wonderful Mom. You used the word "treasure" a few times. So treasure your memories, treasure your happy times together, and treasure the thought that she treasured and loved you.
Man I loved your girl guide shirt and especially the badges! so ridiculous to hear you were asked not to join , obviously you took it and excelled in badge gathering anyway!
Janine, I wish to extend to you and your family my deepest sympathy. So glad you were able to spend the last years very close to her. Take care and speak often of her as it helps with the healing.

Your mum is an amazing person and a great mother. Her life showed how to keep going and be strong.
Oh absolutely, Maria. I so admire women (and men) who have to keep going as single parents, regardless of the circumstances.
A lovely tribute to your Mother. ❤
Thank you ❤️

I hadn't heard that saying before, Barbara. It's certainly true and I know a lot of us are at that age where we've lost people who have always been present.

Thank you, Pamela. ❤️
Thank you, Sheena ❤️
I just discovered the Power Sewing channel here on TH-cam!
Stay warm.
Thank you so much.
So sorry to hear about your mother. Sending prayers. I have a little disruptive granddaughter. Got herself exspelled from preschool. There is hope though. She just got citizenship award in kindergarten.
Thank you, Victoria. Sorry for the slow reply.
Janine, sending sympathies at the demise of your mother. She sounds as though she was an inspiration and an amazing role model. How fortunate you are to have had her in your life for so long. Sending warm wishes in this challenging time
Thank you so much, Nicole.❤️
Dear Janine. So very sorry for the loss of your wonderful Mom. You used the word "treasure" a few times. So treasure your memories, treasure your happy times together, and treasure the thought that she treasured and loved you.
Thank you so much, Linda ❤️
My condolences Janine, that must have been difficult to share. ❤
Thank you so much. ❤️
Man I loved your girl guide shirt and especially the badges! so ridiculous to hear you were asked not to join , obviously you took it and excelled in badge gathering anyway!
🤣 It was sure a different time, right? My sister has told me that the Guide leaders were all mean so I didn't miss anything 😉
Sorry to hear of the loss of your mom. Cherish her many memories 🧵 🪡
Thank you so much ❤️ Every day something makes me think of her and it brings only happy memories.
