    My ready-to-wear cropped pants are from Reitman's in Canada. And I paid $32 - not $25 (sorry!) They are deep indigo blue, have a yoga waistband with no closure, and are petite sized. I am 5'7" and have long legs with an average length torso. These fit me fine.

    The coloring of your top is absolutely gorgeous on you!
    I stopped by my local quilt shop after it reopened a few weeks ago and asked the owner if she planned to do sewing socials in the classroom. Sure enough, she’d been thinking about some sort of open sew for any type of sewing, but wasn’t sure if people would be interested. Since I asked about it, she set the event up in the calendar right then. A lot of quilt shops aren’t just for quilters (okay except for the lack of garment fabric…) so it’s worth asking!

      I have made this top with different fabrics, and just love it. I have made it with a zipper, and without a zipper; also I have made it, with no zipper, with buttons and button holes down the front. Also, with, and without sleeves. I have had many compliments regarding this top. I love this pattern. 👏👏👏😘

      Most of the quilt shoos around me have sit sews. $10 a day, and some ladies go every single day!..
      In some stores, they have formed their little groups and don't welcome new people. They bring snacks and have lunches.
      New people have to sit at the ends of the tables.
      In most stores, everyone is welcomed.

    Yes, I have been looking for my missing waist! 😜 Since I am small busted I don’t have issues there. The fabric on the top is so pretty! The linen pants look so comfy! I’ve been retired for more than five years. I personally like not having a schedule to keep. Happy sewing and have a great summer! 🤗❤️

    I love how you're experimenting with colours Janine. Oh that ponte is going to be so great with your new top. I like how you showed us how bringing in the shoulders would make the neckline look a lot more sharper too.
    Happy birthday Janine!
    Now I get a good night's jotting my tasks down at the start of the week and mark them off as they get done. If I complete unplanned things during the day, they go on the list too.
    Remember to be kind to yourself and your valuable time.

Honestly I really hear you on the waist front. I've been tiny all my life and now struggling with a thick waist which gets thicker every day I swear 😂. Why didn't people warn us about this?! Hi Janine! I’ve really been enjoying your videos! One of my Atlantic Sewing Guild friends recommended you to me and I love to connect with other Canadian sewists. I’ve been following the news about the water problems in Calgary and hope it all gets resolved soon. I’m just about to head out for one of our Guild’s Saturday Sew Days and I’m am also going to be working on some new cushions for our deck chairs! Not the most exciting sewing but useful and “dumb” enough that I’ll be able to sewcialize with my sewing friends today. We all recognize that sewing is something you do mostly by yourself, which can be kind-of lonely at times, unless its a very involved project when you need to pay lots of attention to pattern instructions! Thanks for your videos! I’ll look forward to the next one and your top is lovely!

    I live in TX, it’s so hot here, I wear crops or simple sun dresses every day. Your plum ponte would look good as an elastic waist a line skirt, about the same length as your crops. I have a few of those I wear with more fitted t-shirts and find them very versatile. I’ve been retired for 6 years, it’s hard at first to get your schedule in hand….i constantly felt like I should be doing something every minute. Eventually you get a rhythm. I started with setting my alarm at 8 AM every day. Baby steps!

      @JanineSews  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sun dresses and skirts are so nice in the heat. I've thought about making a skirt. I have a pattern that I used for a Ponte skirt in the past. Need to drag it out and put it on for all of you.
      I still get up with the alarm - although I hit snooze a lot more than I should!

    I really enjoy your videos. Welcome to retirement! My daughter pointed me towards bullet journalling when I retired to help me keep track since the days tend to blend together. Mine is black pen in a lined notebook, no artwork or calligraphy LOL. I have been watching TomKat Stitchery to help fit tops over the menoboobs and she says to pick the pattern size by measuring the upper bust and then do an FBA. I am working up the nerve to give it a try. Thank you.

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Bullet journaling - that sounds really interesting! I do like to use pen and paper, and have absolutely horrible handwriting so there would be no calligraphy or drawings 😆
      I'm going to take a few steps back on this one and try a couple of things - using the high bust measurement and also trying Nancy Zieman's methods. If I skip the lining, it's a fast little make so probably a good pattern for messing around.
      Thanks so much for watching!

    Hi Janine! I love the material of your top. It looks nice on you, but I can see how the fitting tweaks will make it perfect. I am one week retired from teaching 48 years. My house is a disaster as it was ignored for the last few weeks of school. I also make a "To do" list the night before and while I don't always get everything done, it keeps me going and focused. Janine, love your new top! The colours are fabulous and it goes so well with your capris!. I looked immediately on the Reitmans site but was unsuccessful determining or finding the same capris. lol I am watching as I am sewing a hem in a True Bias Mave Skirt and was discussing with my husband today about planning my time better to get all the sewing done that I want to do. I have been retired 7 1/2 years and am disappointed in myself that I lost my ability to schedule my time. I look forward to a live video in July, now if I can just remind myself to get on the computer at the right time. haha. Sorry about the water troubles in Calgary, I have been watching the news and it is certainly a serious situation. Take care 💞

    LOVE your make of this pattern! It’s one of my favorites! I made this same pattern last year, and am about to make it again. I found the same issues as you, with my own aging body. I love the profile of the top, and found it great for scraps since it is pieced from smaller pieces of fabric. The first top was from a stretch corduroy & had sleeves. I also left out the zipper as I found it plenty big enough to slip over my head. I didn’t do much fit adjustments, but even so, it’s one of my favorites. Definitely helps give me a waist. On this next make, I won’t add sleeves until I put it on inside out, and pinch out the extra fabric along the princess seam. Also, as others recommended, Nancy Zieman’s sizing was key to me getting a better fit in the shoulders, and then I grade out to the larger sizes I need for waist and hip. Loved seeing this!

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks so much! And I love that you have made this with scraps. What a brilliant idea! You could really create a nice silhouette with a darker colour on those side panels. I appreciate you sharing this, and for watching.

  • @jennetthamilton971
    @jennetthamilton971 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    I love the style of your top and the fabric you chose. I bet it would look great with a white bottom. Oh the changing body. My biggest issue is the upper arm. I really need to get back to some weight lifting. Retirement is an adjustment. I told myself I would walk ever morning. Well it's only taken me 4 months to do that and of coarse I pick the hottest week. But it's not too bad at 6:00 a.m. And I feel so much better throughout the day and sleep a bit better. My husband and I try to make a list for the day, stuff that needs done around the house, stuff to do together for fun, stuff to do separately, and even meal planning, We don't always stick to the list but it helps. A sewing social sounds fun. I'm quite content to spend most of my time alone but know as I age being social is important. So far I've joined an yoga class, and trying to stay connected with life long friends and work friends.i think I will do some research of my littl3 town to see if there is somewhere to organize some kind of sewing social.

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Jeannett, there are some white capris and pants in my closet. They will definitely be in the rotation 😊
      Sounds like you and your husband are a really good team. It's wonderful that you're working towards things together while still doing things separately.
      I've started weight lifting again and can see a big difference in my arms (when flexed). And I was experiencing frozen shoulder, which the weight lifting seems to have helped with. Yoga classes are on my list, too. Flexibility is probably as important as weight training. (Or that's what I'm thinking 😉)

    I loved the top you made and it was so pretty. I’m telling everyone how nice they look and the same goes for you. I never realized how pretty blue your eyes were. Before you go thinking I’m a crazy person I got my second cataract removed yesterday and I’m seeing things like I was in my 20’s. I was in awe over the colors in your home. I need to get serious and find a sewing group too. None of my neighbors sew and there are things I could use in person suggestions. Fitting when you get my age (70) is not that easy with a. Belly, bad knees, and poor endurance. I think it’s easier to fit another person than it is yourself. So I could be helpful to another person in that way also. I hope your water restrictions lift very soon. Just sewing here in Virginia & sitting outside looking at all the beautiful things I’ve been missing.

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Victoria, I'm so pleased for you! And what a nice time of year to be seeing things through clear eyes ... all the colors of the flowers and green of the grass.
      You're right - it is easier to fit someone else than it is ourselves. Even with mobile phones that can be propped up or put on a tripod, we still don't see things the same way that others do. Perhaps one of the local sewing stores would be willing to offer up time for those who sew? You might find a few kindred spirits. 🩷

    Lovely top (fabric & cut). I totally relate to the younger me vs my shape today. And still often forget how good the FBA is & just try a larger size & too big in the shoulders & neck. Darts from the armhole & elsewhere until I get the pattern adjusted enough. A cousin in Calgary told me about the water trucks coming in for the Stampede--somehow I missed him telling me about the mains break!

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm glad that I'm not the only one who just decides to go bigger. It's surprising that so few of the Big 4 designers use cup sizing. The idea that every part of our body gets bigger with bust sizes is just crazy!
      Sounds like the City will have everything sorted out just in time for Stampede. However, if everyone is holding their laundry and house cleaning as I am, there will be a big run on water that week.

    When I was younger I couldn’t figure out how old ppl wear elastic waistbands and are still watching Lawrence Welk. I have figured out the elastic waistbands but if you find out about the other thing lmk. I love the fabric of your blouse, do you ever adjust for sloped shoulders? Sometimes I have to take a little pinch out that angled area.

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hahaha! My mom LOVED Lawrence Welk. She and dad watched it every Saturday night - it was like a religion. 😆 Now I listen to Sounds of the 80s on Saturday night. But 80s music is still cool. Am I deluding myself?
      I haven't done a sloped shoulder adjustment but know that one of my shoulders is a bit lower than the other. It's certainly worth looking at, especially in tops like this where the shoulder slope is so apparent. Thanks for suggesting this!

    Hi Janine -Thank you so much for another terrific video. Your new top looks like spring :) I had two ideas for your pretty purple ponte. As I was looking at your shape with your (flattering) linen pants, I thought a pencil skirt (that cuts in a tiny bit at the bottom) or a Pattern Emporium Coastal skirt (I've made loads of them with a single slit). Not sure if those interest you, but I'm sure you'll find something just right.

      Charlotte, thanks so much ❤️ I've thought of a pencil skirt but just don't know how much I would wear it. However, I looked at the Coastal Skirt and that looks like something that would be really nice for summer. I don't know if it would work for the Ponte but my brain is now thinking that it would be really nice in linen blend - something that doesn't crease. Thank you for that suggestion!

    Heard about the water main break…. It’s challenges like this that bring communities together! Hope it resolves itself soon! Catching rainwater is a great habit to get into…especially for gardens. Draughts are becoming a way of life, unfortunately. I live in Ontario and cannot buy New Look patterns at Fabricland. Do you mind telling me where you found yours? Love NL patterns, but can’t seem to find them in my neck of the woods. Love seeing your makes…. Happy sewing!

      It feels like people are getting used to the water situation but we are heading into a warm and dry week so it might become challenging. We have 7 big bins of water now (covered to avoid skeeters) and we will be fine. Others might find it a bit more challenging. I think this is probably a wake-up call for other municipalities.
      I bought some New Look patterns on line from Simplicity in the US when they had a pretty good sale. That wound up being cheaper than purchasing in Canada. The best source I have found online in Canada is Gala Fabrics in Victoria. Rumour has it that they will no longer be printing New Look so I have purchased several since I prefer printed patterns to PDF.

    The top is absolutely beautiful on you! I don't think it's too fancy but I know a lot of us feel we have to save nicer things for when we go out and wear older or more ordinary things at home. Those water restrictions sound tough and I hope the main is fixed soon. We have lost electricity from time to time and realized how much we can't do without it - like use a sewing machine! Gauze pants sound so comfortable and they are very much in style this year, too. I was lucky to get some great shorts that fit well, are well-made and just what I wanted for ten dollars a pair - I bought three - there's no way I could have replicated them myself and certainly not at that price - sometimes it just makes sense to buy something and save your effort for something else. My retired friends and I all wonder how we managed to work, take care of our homes and other responsibilities since we get so little done in a day now 😄! Well, we're human beings, not human doings!

      This morning I ordered another pair of the denim capris. You're right that there are times when it is easier (and less expensive) to just buy things that fit. I've been putting off sewing a bathing suit because I know that I can buy one for less time and aggravation!

    Hello from Ontario! Really enjoyed your video, sewing projects, and sense of humour! The top you are wearing is so pretty and I really like the idea of using the plum Ponte for coordinating pants, if that's what you decide to go for. A pattern that I have had great success with for stable knits is Style Arc "Barb's Pants"...they are a super simple project, straight leg but you could widen if desired, and a yoga-style waistband. I got mine a couple years ago and it was a free pattern at the time but now I see that it is a regularly priced pattern on their website. Good luck with the water situation, I have been hearing about it on the news, hope everyone is getting through it ok. Have a great weekend!

    If you look at 1800 patterns how they made those tops fit was darts. Not just bust line darts but vertical darts between shoulder and top of bust to remove extra fabric so neckline would lay flat. I would guess that's how smocking came into play.

    • @JanineSews
      @JanineSews  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Catherine, that's very interesting! And it sure would help fitting those tops or dresses that don't fit in the shoulders. Thank you so much for sharing this. I'll consider whether it would work for this and will keep it in mind for future projects.

    Love your top. It's so pretty on you. The colors and silhouette are just lovely. Also want to let you know your ready to wear cropped pants are very flattering on you. Initially I thought you were wearing a tight skirt and immediately thought "vava voom," so sexy. Then I realized, of course, that they are pants. Well, they are still sexy and slenderizing because of the close fit. You should definitely stock up on more of those while they are on sale. Your cropped knit Reitman Capri's .. Do they have pockets? I might have to search out a pair while on vaca in cottage country.
    Have a look at pattern emporiums "sporty lounge skirt". I cut it off just below the pocket bags, added a 3-4" (can't remember) flounce that I copied from a RTW skort and a yoga waistband and attached a pair of bike shorts underneath from the "rally skort" from greenstyle patterns. Find the rally skort too full, almost like a circle skirt at the hem.

      Katherine, the capris do have pockets on the front. Typical jeans pockets so not a lot of space for much but enough for a tissue, house key, credit card. They are petite sized but fit me and I'm just a smidge shorter than you.
