well done - nice fix on the pointer. So the 16v capacitor - it just means it is rated for circuits below 16v (you quite often might see a 100v capacitor in a 24v circuit). You were right about that part of the board, that was the voltage regulator, its probably bringing the voltage down to 5v. The 2 components next to each other you aren't sure about - the black round thing is the Buzzer, the bit that makes a noise when you put it near metal - they normally work on 5v. The silver thing is a vibration motor - a tiny motor with a weight on the end that is off-center, and makes the pointer shake when it comes near metal.

Thanks for pulling it apart , just looked at many 'GP Pointer' YT videos and your efforts have thrown a beam of light onto other fixes they were on about. 1 ) Shining a bright light through the pointy end from the side can confirm you have the detecting part against the end of the plastic container or not. He used a stiff wire poker to move his coil further up approx 3/4" ; 2 ) One happy owner said to be cautious and to use a flat finger on the on / off button nothing small , he claims the 'o' ring can be made to leak easily by this sharp action ; 3 ) Another user could boost the reach by fitting an insulated stainless steel band like a radiator hose clamp on the snout up near the LED. Cheers

Common sense would have told you that it’s the beeper and the vibrating device on the back, & I probably know less about electrics than you. But thanks for letting us see the inside of one of these.

Yep it is cheap, but ....had mine for over a year , not even changed the battery....two upgrades 1,.fitted a grommet on the battery top 2. Sealed on/ off switch with waterproof sealant....no issues so far.....

Nice job. 👍 I've just bought one as a backup to my Garrett. Even with the Garrett I've found (as some others have), that you need to cut out a plastic disc shape to fit inside the back of the end cap. When screwed back on, pushes down onto the battery keeping it tight onto the connectors to stop intermittent bleeping.

Nice fix well done ,the price on garrets n stuff are just ridiculous ive had a couple now at about a hundred quid them mother boards probably cost garret or the manufacturers 2 and a half quid and a quid for the outer section , im waiting on a cheap one coming will see what its like at least youve shown us how to fix em and it worked pretty good ,will see what happens ,thanks for showing us your patience lol.

Glad I looked at this, I have had one for three years and it started to go silent, just vibrate, if I gave it a knock it the sound would come on again, well I knocked it too hard one day and it stopped working, took it apart and the wire had broken same as yours, the sound problem turned out to be crap in the speaker grill ! you only need a tiny bit to stop it working, my fix was easy as I had another GP pointer that from new was crap on sound, too high pitch for me to hear, so I took it apart and unsoldered the new end rod bit and soldered the wires back on to my unit, be careful taking it apart the on off button fouls, in fact it has to be put back in at a slight angle and then twist to get the button in the right place.

The 16 v spec is just the maximum rated voltage of the electrolytic capacitor. The rest of the passive smd caps are probably rated at 50 volts Max. The voltage from the battery probably runs through a linear voltage regulator where this large cap is attached, this reg is probably a 5volt fixed voltage regulator which is for the small micro controller IC. Other ics on the board are most probably opamps for amplifying and detection of the return signal so the micro controller has a meaningfull voltage to work on as far as input levels. The ferrite loopstick antenna is to shape the magnetic field into a long pattern that reaches out further than its diameter in the magnetic field.

Just noticed on mine (arrived yesterday) that it sits 1/4" from the tip, and pushing it won't move it further forward. On taking it apart, I can see some excess rough plastic inside is catching. This is preventing it from being pushed to the tip. Also, one of the wires to the board broke. 🙄 I'll have to solder, then try and find something suitable to remove the excess plastic. Also noticed on reassembly, although the swith lines up with the hole centre, the light won't protrude through the tiny hole like a Garrett, it sits flush in the recess.
