    In my opinion niche fragrances don't always have to be challenging and polarising as this video implies. I also don't think simple, mass-pleasing niche fragrances are any less niche because of that. I think that a niche fragrance should, above everything else, focus on the quality of ingredients and originality and niche quality for me is about smelling smooth and well blended.

      Niche, by definition of an adjective, refers to appealing to “small, specialised section of the population”. Niche brand frags can be easily mass appealing, which debunks their “niche” status. I can see where you’re coming from tho, some niche frags set the bar for being mass appealing. So for me, it’s about what came first and what audience it was presented for originally. Uniqueness scores highly for me

    Hey Justin, It is our great delight that you regularly “infuse new & interesting insight into the topic,” whatever topic you address! A random note: I enjoy the colorful emails I receive from the likes of Argos and Chris Collins. But Monday brought a smile from a simple little text message that started with, “Hello Wayne! This is Shawn Crenshaw with Ovation for Men fragrance.” Of course, it was the computer that put it together, but the little message was refreshing…ending with “feel free to reach out to me anytime…!” The video intro to Ovation, which you shared with us way back, is one of the few promotions that ever brought a lump to my throat.

    - Givenchy Gentleman Réserve Privée.
    From your list I have Terre D'Hermès Parfum and it's perfection!

    I’m glad I could help with your content! Very exciting! Haha!
    Designers or independent houses can be NICHE, simply because of who it is intended for. Niche can be a noun or an adjective. Niche can be in reference to the origin of the scent, or the type of end line consumer that it is intended for. I still don’t really think niche involves the actual smell or the price though.

    • @stayfreshproductions
      @stayfreshproductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s a lot I agree with that you said, especially about price…but I absolutely believe that niche refers to scent. Without that, the term is too wide open.
      Under that logic, one could say that Dior Sauvage is a niche scent, because it’s “niche” audience is young males who just want to smell fresh and attractive with no effort. That’s a HUGE niche. Semantically, it makes sense. But everything cannot be blurred together, otherwise nothing has meaning. Know what I mean?

    • @golfbuddy1969
      @golfbuddy1969 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stayfreshproductions absolutely. I would revise my last statement slightly though, that it can be defined by who it is intended for, as long as the group is small or very specific. But things aren’t always black and white, and things aren’t always gray. The key is having an open mind about this art we love. So many are closed and unyielding.

    Tom Ford black orchid parfum is an amazing scent. I wrote this at a black tie event and I felt like the man of the hour. Cartier declaration (the original) is another one that challenged me when I first got it. At first I felt like it was body odor in a bottle but then I revisited it and let it sit on my skin to develop and boy I'm glad I did. The notes begin to stand out and bloom into something amazing. Neither one is blind buy safe but once you let them develop they're absolutely amazing.

    Great video. I find myself tired and bored of all these sweet modern "masculine" fragrances. I tried Terre D'Hermes EDT in Sephora last week and I don't understand what took me so long to get a bottle. It was impressive to me. Definetly interested in Beau de Jour too.

    That is one of the most interesting topics in the fragrance world. Although I am not very fan of the Dior Sauvage elixir, it think it smells like niche in some ways. DHP is indeed the quintessential designer brand that smells niche more than many niche brands - yes much more niche and much better than Aventus.

    I can definitely see Dior Homme Parfum being niche. It’s my favorite of the Dior Homme line. To me it’s easier to wear because it’s really masculine to me and the Iris doesn’t dominate the fragrance like the Original or Intense. Nothing else smells like DH Parfum. I also have Cartier Dun soir. Masculine Rose that’s no difficult to pull off.

    I have so many opinions on this topic. One being that when the designers make a niche like frag it becomes iconic and often copied by the niche world. In fact they all take questions from one another Tom Ford noir is a great example. It literally smells like an antique Violin case or how you would imagine Dracula would smell inside his coffin that being said the comparison to habit rouge is spot on

    • @andreas6624
      @andreas6624 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is made me laugh!!! I went to a high end store and smelled Noir and thought, ‘what on earth, how are people loving this?!?!’ I was baffled to say the least!!!

    • @mrrob4590
      @mrrob4590 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andreas6624 i totally get it. It’s not mass appealing but it’s very much in the stylings of Mr Tom Ford. It smells retro and gothic all at once. I do think it works well in a black suit. This by no means is a casual frag it just wouldn’t work. I can tell you that many frags that seem dated can absolutely change their feeling when paired with a suite. For instance I own Chanel boy. From the bottle it smells almost feminine however over the spring I had a church event I had to wear a light suit and the frag absolutely complimented what I had on as well as the situation I was in. I no longer own noir but I have a decant I’ll sniff once in a while.

    BDJ is a love of mine and was my signature for a while, until I discovered Bracken Man. I prefer Bracken Man's spicy, earthy sweetness, and now I find BDJ a bit too herbal and bracing for the first hour, and blander comparatively on the drydown.
    Having said that, once the herbaceousness dies down, the ambery lavender/oakmoss/patchouli combo is very suave and enjoyable. I don't wear it as often recently, but it's still an awesome fragrance and a great change of pace.

  • @MickeyNutz54
    @MickeyNutz54 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video Justin. I think we share a similar perspective on what qualifies a fragrance as niche. The clue is in the word itself. Niche fragrances are fragrances that are created for a very specific target market, regardless of what other products the house/brand sells.
    Comme des Garcon has been around since 1969 but didn't start selling fragrances until 1994, and i would consider almost all of their fragrances niche.
    However, I will say this... IMO, clones of niche fragrances Are. Not. Niche. As good as some of them can be, they're still just clones.

  • @FrancisFjordCupola
    @FrancisFjordCupola ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hermes H24 is something I could consider niche, because I'd consider it overall unappealing. But I'm glad someone likes it.
    Dior Homme Parfum is gorgeous, at least for me. I can understand if it makes people topple over and ...
    And while I agree that Dior, Hermes and Tom Ford toe the niche line at the very least, I would have liked to see more houses featured, but that's just me. Ok, the Gucci and Cartier come in at the end, but it was really that switch to Tom Ford's that felt disappointing to me. I can see why you put those last two in, though.
    Edit: One other thing is that niche scents can sometimes (not always, certainly not) come across as more natural and thus of seemingly higher value. Perhaps you could take that approach instead of designers that are not mainstream. (Even if some of them deserve to be.)

      I'm not sure where you live, but this idea that everyone is wearing certain fragrances doesn't hold water in any place I've ever lived. Most people don't wear fragrances and even if they do, they have one, two, MAYBE three...and most people aren't dropping 80, 90 100 or more dollars even if they have a couple. I've yet to come across someone wearing fragrances I have, with the exception of my buddy who got me into fragrance and even then, he and I have two that are the same. And it's not like we don't both have a nice mix of niche and designer fragrances. You tubers HAVE pushed the idea that, 'EVERYONE is wearing certain fragrances'; however, it's more like 'Many people WHO COLLECT FRAGRANCES, have certain fragrances'. BIG difference between those two statements.

    Dior Fahrenheit Le Parfum smells kind of like a Niche fragrance, maybe even better than the Parfums De Marlys series - it's got that Niche vibe…
    A scent that's similar to Dior Fahrenheit Le Parfum is Amouage Portrayal Men. I actually have both, so I can totally describe how they compare

      I was just posting similar with regards to Fahrenheit parfum. I still think homme parfum is a bit more complex but they are both bangers.

    • @frian3099
      @frian3099 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hc8771 I totally agree with you! Dior Homme Parfum is definitely more complex than the Intense version, with that smooth iris and a bit fruity vibe
      And you know why I think Fahrenheit Le Parfum feels kinda niche compared to the other Fahrenheit versions? It's got that extra touch of vanilla and boozy notes, sort of like an homage to the older Fahrenheit but with its own unique twist

      What would be the differences between Portrayal and Fahrenheit Le Parfum? I think about getting either one...

    • @frian3099
      @frian3099 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vincenthusvh Both of them share violet leaf notes. Dior Fahrenheit's standout feature is the petrol-like note, which gives it a warm, somewhat floral, and gasoline-like vibe. On the other hand, Fahrenheit Le Parfum leans more towards a boozy vanilla scent
      Amouage Portrayal Man also has that violet leaf note, but with the balanced complexity addition of tobacco and leather, it exudes a more sophisticated, more masculine, and mature fragrance compared to Fahrenheit

    Designer brands have “Niche”fragrance lines but the same is not said for Niche brands. They don’t have “designer” fragrance lines. Hope that clears it up for some people.. example: Chanel, Dior, Armani all have mainstream “designer releases” but they also have a “Niche” line of fragrances that don’t sell nearly as much because it’s intended for a specific audience at a higher price point so that they have more of a budget to focus on specific notes and use higher quality ingredients for that specific type of fragrance

      I hear what you’re saying. In regard to your second comment about Tom Ford, I don’t believe it is only the Private Blend line that could be considered niche. I believe that most of their fragrances, even those in the signature line, could be considered so as well.

    I will add Carolina Herrera Saffron Lazuli to this list. Though, it is from her exclusive Confidential collection and it is definitely priced niche (ouch!), so maybe this isn't what you had in mind. Nonetheless, I don't do designer anymore, but recently bought this because everything about it screams "NICHE". It is extremely nice and I can't wait until the weather cools down so I can start wearing this on the reg. Check it out, JC.

    Based on the press, I think Hermes truly thought H24 EDT was going to be a game-changer, one of those one-in-a-decade fragrances that defines what the mainstream is, much as Aqua Di Gio did in the ’90s or Sauvage did in the 2000s. Unfortunately, instead of being mass-appealing in a unique way, many people thought it was weird in an unpleasant way.

    I know that our community would like to think of niche and designer with more nuance and based on scent, but the truth is we call them that based on availability and price. For example, yes, a lot of Tom Ford private blend fragrances do not smell niche but if you do not live in a major city, you most likely don’t have access to them and they are priced very high so to the general public they are niche although some of the actual scents may not be at all.
    I personally find there’s a ton of niche perfumes out there, especially vanillas and citruses, that’s smell pretty basic and “designer” and very hard to justify their $150+ price tag. Not to mention new price increases and more and more houses pricing 50-75ml bottles for $275+ of these commercial smelling scents.

    • @stayfreshproductions
      @stayfreshproductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t know if what you said about Tom Ford is in response to what I said-but I absolutely did not say that Private Blend do not smell niche. Quite the contrary! I believe I said that there are very few of Tom Ford’s fragrances that smell “mainstream”, to me.

    • @BonitoFlakes24
      @BonitoFlakes24 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stayfreshproductions no not at all lol. I was literally just thinking of neroli portofino to use as an example instead of some more obscure brands. I disagree with some of your choices but that’s definitely all relative. I’ve had someone outside the community tell me a Jo Malone is so unique and then later tell me a Tom Ford private blend was boring.
