- This 11 different string sets on the same model ukulele, a Pono AT or Acacia Tenor. You can find that here - www.theukulelesite.com/pono-at...
The sets are nylon strings - Ko'olau Alohi w/3 high G, and w/3 & 4 low G. Ko'olau Mahana all plain, and w/4 low G. Aquila Super Nylgut High G and Low G. And fluorocarbon sets Oasis Warm high G and Smooth low G. Fremont Blackline high G and with the Fremont Soloist Low G. And Worth BT high G. (Messed up and forgot to record the Worth low G set we had ready). We have done things like this before but this is a very popular model and people are always asking what to string it with so we thought we'd offer another data point with a raw sound sample of the most popular string options and some thoughts from Kalei. Note: we kept the level fairly low when recording and there is no compression so as not to cloud any subtleties in tone that can go away when recording. Listen with good speakers or headphones for the most accurate sound differences. - เพลง

Me also ... maybe my speakers aren't good enough, but I didn't detect 11 truly different tones. Maybe 4 or 5 at the most. Comparisons are probably best heard live.
@Al Fully agree! The more beautiful your sound, the more you'll want to be in that sound and experiment and find sides of yourself you didn't know about.

Kind of surprised that D’addario wasn’t reviewed on here, but to be honest the Aquila strings were the ones that lacked clarity the most in my opinion.
Yes, they all sound beautiful with your sensitive playing and this lovely uke, although the comparison is still very interesting and helpful, including your comments. The video editing is also very impressive and I wonder how you managed to keep the tempo regular enough to allow this? This should be compulsory viewing for anyone planning to post musical instrument reviews, demos or comparisons - excellent!

My favorite high g's were the koolau and worths. Favorite low g was the oasis. Least fave for me were the nylgut strings.

Any suggestions for an 8 string uke? My strings aren't worn out or anything but the strings that came with it sound.... Forced? Flat but in tune? Just not very vibrant. And yes my current strings aren't broken in.

can you please recommend or tell what kind of strings to use on a tenor ukulele, i am looking for steel strings with low G. I am looking to tune it like a mandolin/tenor guitar, GDAE. Would it be possible to tune it this way. Thank you
This kind of comparison is useless: he can make spaghetti sound wonderfully as regular strings!!!

Every comparison I have seen, I am blown away by the Worth Browns! To my ears and speakers, no other string sounds as rich! I have a few sets on order. That said, I think from all I’ve gathered and tried, that in general, Nylguts work best on laminates, but make a good solid wood uke sound like a $30 plinker. I recently replaced fluorocarbons on a solid koa with the Aquilas and hate the plasticky plinky sound! Will be putting the Worth Browns on it when it comes in. That said, the Aquilas sound better on my laminates. Also note that flourocarbons in general have less tension and are smoother and easier to play.
Nice playing! Looking to buy a decent uke, a lot of them are very fancy and nice looking. This one has a fairly plain appearance, but the sound, that's really what's important right? Is this one worth $400? Sounds pretty good here.

I liked the Oasis, but they're really expensive. The Fremont are a good compromise IMO.
I really love all of these sets of strings, except for Aquilas. I don't know what it is about Aquilas but they lack the shimmer or "magic" of the other strings. To me, Fluorocarbon sounds like you are playing crystals but Aquilas are Thuddy and they sound cheap. My ears love fluorocarbon.
Aquilas sing well, but those worth browns were INCREDIBLE!!

Kalei obviously a great player and can make the worst of any instrument string combo sound good, but There are obvious differences between different strings. I’ve grown partial to fluorocarbon and at present love BT Browns on my Martin T1K. The Martin 620? Sounded great as well but are a little brighter to me.
I put a Fremont Soloist low G on it and it’s just awesome. I’ve yet to try
Some Lava with Low G that I have as well as some more Worth’s with the low G.....don’t want to mess around with filing the nut really.
But I’ll give everything a shot in time.
... Because I already have several sets of Fremonts & D'addarios...
I'm trying to play the melody alone and the intro built on Dm, Bbmj7, F.
However, what is the picking pattern at 4:58 and later? It looks a bit complex, I tried to read it by my eyes with very little success. It looks like,
4 + 2 + 1
then the one I hear but don't see,
then 4, 1, 4, 3, 1, 2, and at the same time 4 + 1.
However, when I play the sound is different. Can anyone help with understanding the string picking pattern?

The strings will only add colours and enhance the good players capability. Is the player that counts the most. Any string in a good player's hand will sound good. Any good string in a poor player's hand will sound horrible! You really such a excellent player. Thanks for the video.

hey i'm new to ukulele. can i ask...does the types of strings affect the hardess (hardness when you press the strings down) or is it due to other reasons? please help me thankyou
the bridge at the bottom and the nut on top of the fretboard makes it tougher to play because they pull the strings up away from the fretboard. strings do also affect it because some strings need more tension to be in tune so that can also affect it but the nut and bridge are usually the issue.
so how can i fix it if its due to the nut and bridge?
+Melee Player well, i would recommend a better ukulele. if you have issues with that then the uke is probably trash. mine was $80 US and I love it. But if you want to improve your current one, then you have to file the nut down but it's really not worth it. it's a lot of work and you can ruin it easily. I don't think you can do anything to the bridge.

Oh my god. I don't mean to diss Current-Day Kalei, but 7-years-ago Kalei was a handsome dude.
I use Worth Clear on my 8 string ukulele. They sound great a easier on my fingers.
If you hadn't told me what strings you use, I wouldn't have been able to sleep tonight.

I have a great tenor. My only real problem is tenor strings are so thick they hurt my fingers, no matter how tough my calluses get. Can you recommend softer strings that still sound great, smooth, and still sounds sweet without damaging my fingers?

+Aaron Dela Cruz Ko'olau sets are made by D'addario. Mahana is the Pro Arte material and Alohi is the titanium. Ko'olau was having D'addario make these before D'addario packaged them under their own name. The gauges are also slightly different on some strings but they are basically the same.
Worth Brown's Low G on a Kanile'a or Kamaka…. end of story!
