The after market stuff you could buy for these was amazing, I had the same model and colour ex Canada, upon buying it here in New Zealand the aircompressor was working except that whom ever had it before had changed the outlets so it had the hi set to the front brakes and the low airset to the front. A very big bike but when you are bothe medium to large people then this bike was tops, better than most of the other Japanese big tourers of the time. The V4 was so responsive I rode mine hard and at one stage there were three of us in our club that owned them, long idstance riding a breeze and the cruise control yes they have one was great on long roads, I brought the intercom set for both of us what a great thing to have my wife and I had a laugh a mile and the sound system magic. Sadly mine got drowned in a flood and we sold it off, I also had a pearl colured one for a short time as a loan bike and then brought my burgundy one. In the years I had that bike tyres are an important thing I used Metzlers Me 88s the best tyres I found on this bike they wre a semi radial but suited to the bikes weight, I once put another brand on it what a mistake it was horrible in corners it wriggled about so much, I had the alternator redone and apart from that not much else mnaybe a battery, I purchase an after market screen from the USA that was great in wet weather, the only downside was that my fboots got wet due to water coming down off of the fairing. Mine had enough bling to make it look great, I joined a Yamaha Venture web page way back when great help. I would say the carbs need attention but still these are still long distance tourers with enough luggage space for two.

Owned two of these bike in the nineties. Very nice touring bike. These bikes will run all day in comfort. Motor is good for way over 100k. Own a harley ultra touring bike now and a yamaha royal star, which has the same motor but different cams, and enjoy both

Thanks for sharing this . I just picked up 1990 yesterday . It is about in the same shape as this ,maybe a few more issues . One owner bike but it has been sitting for 4 years . I am looking for a trailer hitch if any one watching this video has one . Thanks

A full service - it's likely not had one in some time, including a carb sync, V-Fours seem to need that more than other types of motors.
I would lose those covers on the front brakes too. The brakes are linked, and are barely adequate for the mass of the bike as it is, covering the discs up only holds the heat in, making brake fade an issue. Also, all those lights are putting a fair bit of strain on the electrical system. A couple of extra lights make you more visible and won't cause an issue.
Stiffer springs on the front forks make a big difference in handling. All the big touring rigs from that era were pretty mushy & wallowy.
I still think that motor was the nicest out of all the touring bikes in that generation. The 6 cyl wing was smoother, but the Yamaha had more top-end power. It is basically a de-tuned VMax engine. It sounds good too, especially with a less restrictive K&N air filter.
I had one for a time as my demo bike while working at a Yamaha dealer back then.I liked it enough that I am always keeping my eyes open for a decent one in my area. Haven't found one yet, everything I've seen has been pretty rough.

Looks like it was well taken care of. Try to get the suspension system straight. It'll make a noticeably better ride. Especially if he is riding two up and the saddle bags and tour pack are loaded. Those bikes are heavy for what they are. Look at the relay for the compressor, the are know to go bad.
You guy are going to have fun.

Nice looking bike. Probably will just need a tune-up and maintenance. Needs more tail lights! lol

sounds like she's not running on all 4 . Leave trailer hooked on tow vehicle when loading/unloading.

What? No reverse gear?? LOL That looks like quite the handful, but a pretty nice bike. I hope your brother-in-law enjoys his new toy. :-)

I was thinking the same thing...too bad it doesn't have reverse like a gold wing.... otherwise, it's a really good bike.
