Respect to everybody involved in this production. Watch the video again and imagine how hard it is do film all of this in one single take, with perfect timing of where the camera shows and all. Very nicely done!
Superb video. That said, and I apologize, I have one nit to pick: "at 68° this fairing is two inches above the ground [...] 'Bernoulli's Principle' [...] if we're squeezing air though this narrow gap [...] that sucks the whole bike towards the ground" Bottom line: there is no way to generate a down-force on the bike from the air without directing air upwards. TL;DR I sincerely doubt this effect, that the ***NET*** force induced by air compressing between the bike and the ground is downward, is even close to true - any "Bernoulli-resultant" force at that narrow gap is not enough to counter the previous downward push downward on the air (Newton's Third Law). The only way that would be possible is if the air was being thrown (direct) upwards (Newton's 3rd again) ***BEHIND*** the bike i.e. momentum transfer F = dM/dt, and I don't see a trailing edge in the fairing that would do that. N.B. I am ***NOT*** saying there is ***NOT*** a low pressure at the narrowest point of that gap, just that the down-force from that low pressure is not enough to overcome the other forces that caused it. This misplaced concept is similar to the one in sailing theory where it was once thought that the acceleration of air through the "slot" between mainsail and genoa provided a net thrust forward. If you don't believe me, take this to an aerodynamicist. I see there is a patent for this idea; I could easily be missing some subtlety here, in which case I would not be bothered to be proved wrong, but I truly doubt it. I am not saying there is no advantage to these fairings in racing, just that the bottom fairing in a turn does not provide a ***NET*** down-force. We don't get something for nothing. I did not read through all 2,767 comments, so perhaps there is already a discussion here about this; if so, then I apologize and will remove this comment.
Nice reference to the 2 stroke expansion chamber. Pioneered by a guy called Walter Kaaden who worked for MZ. He and one of the MZ race team's riders, Ernst Degner defected from MZ and the Eastern Bloc to Japan and went to Suzuki. Next thing you know, Suzuki became the dominating force until the other big names like Honda and Yamaha got their heads around expansion chamber tech. However, never forget the contribution made by MZ!!!
I rode an MZ once and it felt like the frame and engine were made out of lead, it was a commuter bike so obviously didn't feature any race tech, but it still blows my mind they managed to make it that heavy!
@memitim171 they're very odd bikes, but a bloody hoot to ride. Quite rare now. I own one and mines one of just 5 roadworthy examples of the model of MZ in the entire UK. I don't think they were made to be popular, they were designed to do a job n for a budget and be easy to maintain. That they did well. Sounds like yours was a TS250/1 Supa5 that you rode ^.^
Don't get discouraged if you do not land your ideal job immediately. You may have to take a gig that's outside your ideal goal to pay the bills. It's good to show future employers that you can buckle down and complete tasks in areas you aren't even interested in. One of my very good friends finished a mech eng program from a fantastic school only to be turned down for several "dream jobs". He had a few jobs that weren't ideal for his goals, but one of those jobs connected him with Larry of Multimatic. I'm an aerospace engineer. What Ryan said. Street motorcycle aerosurfaces are about as useful as their automotive counterparts but motorcycles aren't as forgiving with the downside. They're mostly just something to tear off when you go down. Plus nonperpendicular aerosurfaces ahead of the cg are directionally destabilizing. That's aerospace engineering talk.
@@dans2971 An ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure but yeah, if you're going fast enough on a motorcycle for aerodynamics to be a major concern you're probably going too fast.
@@tedchristian2235I guess they sell because they look cool, and manufacturers state that “their winglets add downforce for stability at higher speeds”. What are higher speeds? 200 mph? Who the hell does that in the street? Ah, never mind…. There are those TH-camrs risking their lives for some likes and “street cred”. Fools….
Would the destabilization not be in effect until the non-vertical surface was in front and above the c of g on a ground born conveyance ? Not aerospace engineering talk just simple curiosity.
@@bobturnbull18 Having a vertical surface or a surface with a vertical component ahead of the cg has the same effect as a vertical tail behind the cg except it tends to point you away from the wind instead of into the wind so you diverge in yaw or swap ends.
Particularly because it's not linear. The force generated is in the end of the equation the square of the speed, so at 100mph you're getting like 10lbs of downforce. 2.5lbs at 50mph.
deadass. even the most comically large winglets make absolutely no difference unless you're going ridiculously fast, which you can't do 99.9% of the time you're out. they're so bulky, such an eyesore, and the only way they would be worth it is if they made a big difference in performance, but they don't do fucking ANYTHING
@@Wintersdark i dont see your math adding up mate. If the speed is squared should it therefore be (half the downforce)^2? So only 5lbs at 100mph and 1.25 at 50mph. You calculated it as if its linear

thanks, Ryan, the voice of reason is loud and clear. I retired two years ago moved to Uruguay and bought 2 Svartpilen 401s for my wife and I, yes I can honestly say that I enjoy riding more now at 67 years old than any time in the last 20 years on a 1000cc sportbike. Softer gentler smile-inducing rides like being 10 years old again on a Honda step-thru 90. The only wings on rides now is a once in a while RedBull
Been seeing Squarespace segments from photographers, videographers and creators for what feels like a decade and that was by far the best one I’ve ever seen.
@@ZealothPL Are there any other KLRs that routinely get fitted with milk crates and bleach bottles as accessories? And, why did that comment get censored? Why?
Add active hydraulic air brakes that flair out the back of bikes for drag, and add maximum downforce to the front and rear tires. That would probably be more useful. You could even use a gyroscope to taper off the effect between 0 and 30 degrees. Apply ideal downforce to the front and rear. Something similar to Chrysler's old sketchy electro-hyro braking system. Pretty compact, just prone to failure when it's your primary braking system.
Adding to that: These wings may prevent unwanted wheelies, but as wings go, they can fly upside down! When the wheelie gets steep enough, the wings will start generating lift instead of downward pressure. At high speed, that may come surprising and flip the wheelieist over backwards.
@@indiebekonn Is there anything you'd like to teach someone who grew up with aircraft, designed model aircraft since he was twelve, piloted aircraft and studied physics about how wings work? 🙃
A bit of googling reveals that this was shot at Daytona Motorsports in Vancouver, on East Cordova Street - the mural seems to have been added in 2017 as part of Vancouver's mural festival. It's a massive improvement judging by Street View's images from beforehand. The whole area is a great filming location. It's a bit like Tokyo's suburbs, flat and industrial, but not sketchy-looking.
@@yojimbo21 I disagree! The western side of East Van is indeed sketchy, but this part is cool. Great art, great food, probably the best culture hub in Vancouver. ~RF9

Ryan needs to do more videos. It's like watching a fun lecture from a professor. Great info, lots of technical bits broken down into simple concepts and great thought process.
They've been putting wings/spoilers on 4 cylinder 150 horse power fwd cars for decades. I think we have to accept that some things are there just for the looks.
on regular cars, a spoiler or wing is usually there to augment the airflow path to get rid of some flow separation and thereby reducing drag and increasing fuel economy. they are defiantly aerodynamic surfaces, their just not there for downforce.
Excellent production , as always . Side note : I owned a 1981 Suzuki GS1000S once . It had a weird shaped bikini fairing , not frame-mounted , which made the front end incredibly vague on fast mountain roads . I think it was more a styling exercise in those days than an actual aero benefit anyway .

I don't ride street motorcycles but I find this channel extremely entertaining. bravo, the filming and editing are some the best I have ever seen.
What editing? 😀
@@valuemastery even a single take video (no idea how people are so sure this is the case) needs to be edited. Especially good production videos, which is what the channel here quasi stands for.
Respect to everybody involved in this production. Watch the video again and imagine how hard it is do film all of this in one single take, with perfect timing of where the camera shows and all. Very nicely done!
Superb video. That said, and I apologize, I have one nit to pick:
"at 68° this fairing is two inches above the ground [...] 'Bernoulli's Principle' [...] if we're squeezing air though this narrow gap [...] that sucks the whole bike towards the ground"
Bottom line: there is no way to generate a down-force on the bike from the air without directing air upwards.
TL;DR
I sincerely doubt this effect, that the ***NET*** force induced by air compressing between the bike and the ground is downward, is even close to true - any "Bernoulli-resultant" force at that narrow gap is not enough to counter the previous downward push downward on the air (Newton's Third Law).
I did not read through all 2,767 comments, so perhaps there is already a discussion here about this; if so, then I apologize and will remove this comment.
let's ask @Hambini I reckon he would have something to add

Nice! Just graduated with my aerospace degree with a focus on bikes and this is the right applications of physics, love it
Sounds like a very cool education, what's the next objective if you don't mind me asking?
Don't get discouraged if you do not land your ideal job immediately. You may have to take a gig that's outside your ideal goal to pay the bills. It's good to show future employers that you can buckle down and complete tasks in areas you aren't even interested in.
One of my very good friends finished a mech eng program from a fantastic school only to be turned down for several "dream jobs". He had a few jobs that weren't ideal for his goals, but one of those jobs connected him with Larry of Multimatic. For the last 12 or 13 years, he's been working passionately on really exciting projects all over the world.
Thank you for your life story

absolutly the best channel on you tube.
I never had a motorcycle and I don't plan to purchase one but I enjoy the content of this channel very much, this video is so well done. ❤
One take, no editing just hrs and hrs od hard work learning your lines and hitting you markers. Well done.
@@tedchristian2235 o.k. thanks. I didn't understand that perpendicular was in reference the the direction of motion
"40 lbs at 200mph" that should have ended the discussion right there
For street bikes. For racers, that advantage adds up to quicker lap times.
I only ride street but do like the downforce. That’s why I taped a bunch of bricks to my front mudguard. 🤔👍

idk what you're more knowledgeable of; Motorcycles or film making. Fantastic work, man.
My almost religious love for this channel faded when they started expanding into bmx. But this video reminded me of everything I loved about this channel, what sets them apart, and this video will be the reason I rewatch everything from f9 beginning from the Canada tour with Ryan's dad this Sunday.

Great Video as always. Great Content. Amazing 1-take production. An embedded advert that you can't take your eyes off. This is the bar to which all YT should be held to. Keep up the great work !
Every now and then you come across a genius. Even the ad was eluminating. Bravo! I guess its time to buy something from Fortnine. These videos are worth every bit.
thanks, Ryan, the voice of reason is loud and clear.

I am now adding winglets to my Honda Vision 110
Adding them to my '95 DR...
KLR definitely requires winglets... just have to figure out how to cut them out of bleach bottles.
KLR650?
I'm adding them to my victory vision
@@ZealothPL Are there any other KLRs that routinely get fitted with milk crates and bleach bottles as accessories? And, why did that comment get censored? Why?
Think of wings on a motorcycle as having flame decals behind your exhaust.
You guys have always had top notch cinematography, but this one takes the cake. I can only imagine the prep work that went into this video.

The combination of amazing script, beautiful cinematography and the subject, motorcycles, is just unbeatable. This channel ia chef's kiss.
That Transformers mural in the background was epic too, "Destroy All Machines"...good scouting.
Adding to that: These wings may prevent unwanted wheelies, but as wings go, they can fly upside down! When the wheelie gets steep enough, the wings will start generating lift instead of downward pressure. At high speed, that may come surprising and flip the wheelieist over backwards.
Yikes!
Ahhhh I never thought of that, but it makes sense in theory. Will have to test next time someone lends me their M1000RR :P ~RF9
@@FortNine Better let #46 test it. RF10 may not have studied a decent subject… 🤔
That’s absolutely not how wings work but okay lol.
As someone who lives in the Lower Mainland, that area is beyond sketch…
@@yojimbo21 I disagree! The western side of East Van is indeed sketchy, but this part is cool. Great art, great food, probably the best culture hub in Vancouver. ~RF9

Ryan needs to do more videos. It's like watching a fun lecture from a professor. Great info, lots of technical bits broken down into simple concepts and great thought process.
I'm really impressed with the great content and witty presentation of your videos! Very entertaining as well as informative.
They've been putting wings/spoilers on 4 cylinder 150 horse power fwd cars for decades. I think we have to accept that some things are there just for the looks.
On a car they are much larger though, they don't do much I'll grant you, but it's not nothing.
on regular cars, a spoiler or wing is usually there to augment the airflow path to get rid of some flow separation and thereby reducing drag and increasing fuel economy.
they are defiantly aerodynamic surfaces, their just not there for downforce.
@@bradraymond5502 I guess I'm thinking of the models that had optional spoilers or wings. Those were definitely only cosmetic.

A masterclass in videography and presenting......great work guys!
6:20 That teacher in her Prius has been screwed by the cars either side of her. How is she ever getting out of that Austin Powers parking spot?
