    Just as a heads up: Component (YPbPr) is the 5 connector cable that can output HD. Composite is the 3 connector cable. This is a good thing that the dongle uses Component, not Composite.

      @@mauriciodamenace2356 composite is a separate thing, that’s why the "component video out" setting under "system configuration" doesn’t do anything when you are using the yellow jack
      RGB setting is probably for when you are trying to output to a RGB monitor with component cables

    I bought one of these very recently. It was like 1/3 of the original price so I thought “no harm in trying it”. And it actually looks suprisingly good! Better than when I connect via Scart or the other RGB to HDMI-converter that I have.
    Only two gripes: one was that the supplied usb-cable didn’t work, but no biggie as I had a few spares. I ended up using a PS3 controller charging cable, and it seems to work alright.
    The other is that it seems that the device takes a few moments to power up, so the PS2 startup screen is a bit abrubt.
    Other than that, really happy with this thing!

  • @garveziukas
    @garveziukas 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    What should be noted is that not all HDMI compatible displays will work with this adapter. I got this same exact adapter today and when I hook it up to my fairly old Samsung 1080p computer monitor, it displays an error message stating that the mode is not optimal. After some googling I figured that my display doesn't support 480i/576i input which renders this adapter useless in my case. My recommendation for you all is to get a basic PS2 AV cable and hook it up to an AV to HDMI converter with 1080p upscaling to be sure it's gonna work. Or prepare to potentially spend extra money for an HDMI upscaler.

    I have a few observations about the PS2 to HDMI adapter.
    1. On my slim PS2 (Silver version with integrated power supply) it works without the USB cable. On my fat PS2, it does need it or else it will cut the video signal occasionally.
    2. It does work with PS1 games. In fact, I am using it for Xenogears right now. However, it will be 240p which is not supported over HDMI on many devices. Plugged straight into a monitor, it usually works since PC monitors often do support 240p
    3. Sometimes it doesn't handle resolution changes correctly. You can test it for yourself if you lose video signal, just unplug it (and the USB power) and plug it back in and it will probably work again.
    Still, component is much more reliable if you have the support for it, but this device does work in a pinch.

    • @Microwave414
      @Microwave414 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just to point out, samsung TVs generally have a good track record of supporting 240p content as it should be in the past, if you have an older samsung from before 2013, its probably a safe bet that this adapter will work but to be sure, always check your TVs specs.

      YOHOMIEMP A fat launch PS3. They are your best bet for playing PS2 games on a HDTV especially when you turn on smoothing + launch consoles ARE PS2s. If you absolutely insist on playing on a slim though, a framemeister or an OSSC but be ready to pay for those scaler/line doubler and be ready to dive off the deep end into stuff that will confuse you so I suggest you watch My Life in Gaming videos about the playstation 2 to get an idea on how to get the best picture.... Actually watch the entire RGB master video class series or at least RGB1XX and RGB210 . That will tell you exactly everything you need to get the best picture possible out of old retro machines. (PS: If you go down the scart route, don't cheap out on the cables like I did and buy the hand made custom cables first. Those will be fully shielded!)

    • @Microwave414
      @Microwave414 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is for the most part fine and its the route I've gone down. Mind you it IS a used unit so I don't know if it ever was sent in but it does work. I do have a PS2 hooked up to a CRT though which honestly looks better then HDTVs when it comes to these low resolutions.

    I own one of these myself. The problem with this adapter is not the adapter itself so much but the monitor you're almost certainly going to be plugging it into: The PS2 by nature simply doesn't look good on flatscreens generally, especially LCD monitors. PS2s were really designed to be used on curved CRTs, the curvature of the screen was factored in when making the games as a way of providing anti-aliasing without having to do it directly on the PS2 hardware itself. The PS2 wasn't really powerful enough to do any AA, that's why it relied on curved CRTs to provide a light blending/blurring/softening of the picture. Flatscreen LCDs highlight every last artifact and imperfection in the game, most of which wasn't really intended to be seen by the devs. The saddest part of the PS2 and getting a great picture out of it, however, is the fact that you can tell how much the vision of game devs was limited by the hardware of the time. If you load up Black in PCSX2 and scale it up to 8x resolution it's actually a fantastic looking game, not just because of the res but also because of the amount of detail that went into all kinds of small objects in the environment and the background of the game that is physically impossible to see just running it straight off the original hardware. There are tonnes of games like this on the PS2 where the backdrops and environments are actually amazing and are literally impossible to make out when run on the PS2. Resident Evil 4 is another example that comes to mind.

    I've had three of these. The first one actually used Composite and turned that into HDMI. Sucky for PS2, but I used it on my PS1 with varying success. The other two used component with two different chips inside. The first one deinterlanced 480i signals to 480p and allowed me to play 240p games like ICO on my HD TV. But it hated running PS2 games in higher resolutions than 480p. The screen would tear and drop frames. The third one is like yours.

    I had the opposite issue. PSOne games wouldn't work through component on my TV, however it did work using a PS2 to HDMI adapter. It may all depend on the brand and brand of TV.

    • @eyesvisionsight
      @eyesvisionsight 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct. The reason is because PS1 games use 240p. Some modern TVs aren’t able to use 240p through component but can through composite. Bummer ik

  • @rexthesheep
    @rexthesheep 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Excuse my rambling, but I'm guessing the PS1 incompatibility might be because the device has no idea how to handle 240p. My capture device, an AVerMedia LGP, does the same thing as this adaptor if I hook my PS2 up to it and play PS1 games. Also explains why the PS1 logo displays, as that's 480i.
    That would mean 240p PS2 games (Ico, Mega Man X Collection, Gunbird Special Edition) wouldn't work with this either, while 480i PS1 games (they do exist) would. Buuuuuut that's a minor nitpick.
    And even if it does support 240p content, work 240p over HDMI doesn't work on a lot of HDTVs and monitors anyway, so you'd need to do some sort of line doubling. Or at least do what most upscalers do (including those built into your TV) and just improperly handle it as 480i.

    • @hamstrungharry259
      @hamstrungharry259 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking the exact same thing. Also some monitors and TVs have trouble displaying the 240p content as well. I had the same thing happened when I tried playing Ico on an LG HDtv back in 2010. Realised it couldn't detect any signal so I brought the TV back and exchanged it for a Bravia, worked from the get go.

      Correct. My ps2hdmi device works with ps1 240p games just fine. This guy has a Framemeister, if he tries it with that he will find it works and reports a 240p signal. Most TVs don't like 240p through hdmi, and through component it's hit and miss too

    component cable a lot easier and looks decent on a HDTV. I might get one of these to see if it's any different. With the PS1 games it's a resolution issue with your tv in HDMI. Most PS1 games output @240p. HDMI lowest output is usually 480p. So it's a no go.

    The reason most of these HDMI adapters need external power is because, if the A/V port actually outputs power, it's probably dirty/inconsistent since the console's capacitors and other components are pretty old and at least somewhat faulty. They could maybe integrate some circuitry to clean and filter the power, but this would make the device larger and more expensive, albeit not by much. I'd be pretty skeptical of any cheaper video converters that don't have a port for external power.

And the picture looks so blurry that I can barely make out what in-game screen text says. So in other words, will this adapter fix this problem if I buy one? I need to know whether or not this thing is a waste of money. Get back with me.

  • @azagramac

    About not working with PSX games, it is not the fault of the PS2HDMI, but of the TV that does not support 240p by HDMI, which is the resolution of PSX games.
    But if you have a TV that accepts 240p HDMI, you can play PSX games without problems.

    I think the reason why it might not play with Playstation games is the 240p resolution. Perhaps if you try to play some games that output in 480i then it would work. I know Tekken 3 works at that resolution if you own that.

  • @zummone
    @zummone 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    That "noise" is inherent to the component output. It actually feels like a sort of dithering pattern, and I think that may sincerely be because component gives the absolute crisper output out of all of them, to the console's detriment. I live in a region with SCART so I can use RGB on modern TV sets, and while the noise is totally gone, I feel like the output does have the tiniest bit of smeariness applied, this is probably caused by the sync on composite for the luma/white values, which gets superimposed in the overall pic. The image is still crisp and without artifacts, but you aren't getting as a direct feedback from the console as with using component, which just does sync on its own cable (or maybe, that might actually be what it's causing the noise! doubt it though).
    Now, saying this converter doesn't work with PS1 games is a little bit of an arbitrary statement. You read the back of the box, it said it supported 480i. Most PS1 games are 240p.
    So then why don't you go and try Tekken 3 (a legit PS1 game) to see how well it goes? And on the other hand you could try ICO for the PlayStation 2 (to which you said the converter would run anything from) to see if it actually displays something because *that* game runs at 240p. Cheers.

      This post is not true. There is virtually ZERO different in image quality between component and RGB. If you are using good quality cables, you will not see any noise. This is just a fact. Don't use cheap cables. Sync-on-composite has no effect on your RGB signal if you are using properly shielded cables.

      There is a little difference between Component and RGB-SCART (even on the same resolution).
      It could be due to RGB-2-YUV-conversion as well!
      (Regardless if you are using i.e. Speedlink- or Sony-component-cables, or a cheap one...)

    Hey @MrMario2011!
    We are currently working on an HD-GUI for OPL! We currently can show 1024*1024 textures and stretch them however we want.
    There is no really optimized HiRes-Theme yet, but they might emerge within the next few days/weeks!
    We also run a test to combine multiple textures into one picture, so we could get a real 1920*1080-pictures (i.e. Backgrounds) working as well!
    However... 1024*1024 looks great already!
    Another thing is, that OPL got a lot updates for network/LAN/SMB!
    It will be a lot faster on USB and networks with a lot devices! The Network-Link is a lot more stable, so disconnects should be a thing of the past... If you compare one of the newer versions with an older version, you will notice that the FMVs on a lot games do not stutter anymore!
    I hope you might take a look at these things! :)
    'OPL HiRes' does yield some results...
    Btw.: NFS is back online again, as well as some other PS2-Titles!

    GSM doesn’t work above 576i unless you use gsm with component cables to force let’s say 1080i, then you can switch to the hdmi device and it’ll display the resolution almost properly except extra dark contrast. Also it does play PS1 games, the problem is PS2 yprpr runs PS1 games at 480p 30fps, most monitors and tvs do not support that output, if your monitor doesn’t support that than you can use gsm to force NTSC at x-64 and y+8, to get near center screen, some games will suffer from shrunk screen though.
    Also I noticed you can use the device with a ps1 console to hook up to some sound systems since it sound has nothing to do with color space.

      Not quite sony actually made extremely high end consumer CRTs in 24-36+ inches as the Vega often improperly called the WEGA some of which even have HDMI ports. The best one ive ever seen was a model from 2009 that was 36 inches had 3 y/pb/pr, 3 svideo, 3 composite, rf, and even dual HDMI ports on a 1080i Cathode ray tube television set. Insane. I tried to get a 36 inch model not to long ago for $100 drove all the way out there with my dolly thinking i could get it off the stand and wheel it on over to and into my car and yeah nope you need a few strong friends to move it its gotta be like 300lbs i couldnt even budge the thing and im not a weak dude lol thats why i settled on the 24 inch model which doesn't have the hdmi port. People on a large scale think they are called WEGA because the V has a shadow on its logo that makes it look like a W unless you get really up close to it so when you look for them generally thats what you need to look for lol.

    • @DarthSimous
      @DarthSimous 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Alexis Aguirre Vazquez , PS1 supports natively 240p (most games) and 480i (some games), but only through Composite, S-Video or RGB Modes & appropriate Cables. This adaptor works only by converting Component Signals - which only PS2 supports - to HDMI. Regardless of the resolution, PS1 games on the PS2 don't work with this adaptor (unless utilizing any FreeMcBoot hacks i am not aware of, or other possible Modchip or other hacks). There is another dongle similar to this, yellow-colored, which U can easily find online to buy nowadays and it also supports PS1 (i believe it either uses Composite or RGB signals converted to HDMI). But the quality of the yellow dongle compared to this one, when U use it for PS2 and PS2 games is subpar, compared to this one. Cheers

I do also have an old - but reliable - Sony flat TV 2006 model, which plays flawlesly with my PS3s at 1080i or 720p, game depending, and also looks pretty good with my Fat PS2, together with official Sony component cable, but haven't yet tried hooking-up my PS1 on it TBH (it also has Composite, S-Video, Scart inputs, but i am afraid to test the PS1 with them, lol - don't have anything decent yet, as far as cable goes, for my PS1s)...
      PS1 is mostly the prob, not because it is the oldest system, but because it is - as U said - the lack of native 240p support (not just flat panels or TVs, but most CRTs also can't go that low on resolution, due to 240p running at 15KHz is the main issue, i think). In any case, the Yellow dongle - PS1 & PS2 to HDMI - is quite throwing money away (the quality is plain bad) and the only (half) decent purchase for PS1 atm is a good True RGB Scart Cable, which can be a bit expensive nowadays, due to high demand & low supply. It really is one way solution the cable and the jack is just there for show it transports audio and video without any extra power cable needed or audio cable (at least for me thats the case) i ordered and the package came to me a week ago all u have to do is set the video output mode to Yb/pb/Cr

    PS2 is really one of those "pre-HD" consoles. What I mean by that is, the console is made to work on a older CRT TV not a modern HDTV. I'm actually looking into getting a PVM screen to play my PS2 in RGB on a CRT style screen.

      The actual video output isn't very good either when compared to Xbox or GameCube in component. Not sure why that is, unfortunately 😐

      Could be the CPU, could be Graphics chip. Could be a lot of things. Next to the Dreamcast, the PS2 was one of the weakest hardware setups of that generation. Even so, the Dreamcast had the hardware to smooth it's output. The PS2 was not really designed for games first, it mostly focused on DVD support. The games are a nice addition, but that's not what Sony was thinking during development.

      Dreamcast outputted everything at 480p @60fps with a VGA cable. Though only about 90% of it's library supported it. On a VGA Supported CRT monitor games looked amazing. High anti aliasing too in VGA. While not a powerhouse it was an impressive bit of gear

    This adapter is extremely useful because my LED TV doesn't have component support. I bought it cheap for 5 dollars and it is a decent alternative.

    you can play ps1 games on the ps3 so that problem may be sorta solved

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's not solving the problem, that's just getting a PS3 LOL

    • @EdgeDev
      @EdgeDev 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok. but it runs the PS1 games. and it looked fine to me. but yeah it may not be the greatest solution. Maybe just searc h up getting the best picture in your playstation then maybe you might find something good. (i said *MAYBE* cause some solutions maybe expensive

    This ps2 to hdmi adaptor is complete trash, I regret the day I bought it. MrMario, these moving thin diagonal lines on the screen that you mention more than once, DO NOT come out of the PS2, they come out of this trashy adapter and as proof of that.... try to connect the ps2 through a quality component cable or even a cheap one (who is supposed to be the same signal the adaptor uses), you will find no diagonal lines moving across the screen there. DON'T BUY THIS TRASH unless your tv does not have component input.

      I have used mine for 6 months for now. The image is clear and it doesn't give any false colors or anything. The image doesn't shake. I use it for my 50" 4K television.

    The way I have always done it is I use a DVD recorder with an HDMI out with the better cables and it does all right that way, plus I can put three consoles to the DVD recorder and only tie up one HDMI port. It's a little bit of a pain in the ass and more expensive BUT... you can record your games directly to DVD if you're an old fart like me and like to have physical copies of things.

    Back when GTA-III was new. I too was surprised on how bad the image quality on the Ps2 is. And that was even on a SCART cable, hooked up to an 20inch CRT television. Basically kept me from playing other games than those with the image quality of games such as Gran Turismo III and Dead Or Alive 2. DOA2 and VirtuaFighter4 is perhaps the best looking ones on Ps2 if you ask me. I am thinking of the overall quality through the entire game.

    Hey, so if your looking to Stream/Record PS3 Footage... This works as a HDCP Stripper... Use Responsibly for PS3 Games only!
    I use this to Stream PS2 games and recently wanted to Stream MGS games (All of them), but ran into issues with HDCP, been looking for a Splitter that Strips HDCP and then after several days Iw as like, hold the phone! I stream PS2 games with one of these, pluggd it in and using AverMedia LGX2 and OBS with no issues (you may need to restart OBS after changing resolutions, if you get a Signal Out of Range screen).
    NOTE: Only Stream/Record Games, keep it legal!

      @@MrMario2011 Sadly I only realised I could use this for PS3 AFTER I spent $80 on several "HDCP Stripping Splitters"... That weren't HDCP strippers, Gotta love False Advertising!
      They were able to get Away with it coz TECHnically, they weren't lying, it does Strip the HDCP by Converting HDCP 1.4 into 2.2, which I still don't understand the full reasons or why this is legally allowed but it's very obviously used to trick PS3 Streamers, without repercussions.
      I also forgot to mention this does of course limit the Streaming of games to 720P/1080i, but imho it's worth it for convenience.
