I wish I could set this as my alarm whenever it snows. If I could wake up to this just once and see nothing but snow, it would make my life. I'd feel like Ralphie. And if you don't know which Ralphie, shame on you.
I think it's time someone uploaded the whole thing. I had this on tape but lost it. The great Kurt Masur conducting the Tchaikovsky original along with Wynton Marsalis' Lincoln Center band playing the corresponding Ellington version.
Nice take of a classic jazz arrangement. Slightly slower tempo, I think, compared to Duke's own recording but the clarity of the parts justifies the pace. Swings pretty nicely.
And yet he seems to either notice it, or is sleightly corrected by the drums (mostly snare) which puts it all in place without anyone really noticing. Details like this often make live music better instead of worse.
I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED THIS IN MY LIFE UNTIL RIGHT NOW
Bass player is Rodney Whitaker. He's currently the Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Jazz Bass at Michigan State University. Swing!!!
Man the lady in the background @ 2:22 = me whenever I hear Rodney. Priceless.
