Hey mate - thank you for the awesome video - I used your electrical tape method the other day on a Yamaha MT07 and it was a breeze to fit the fork seals - never going to buy a seal driver now!! - As you say though - getting the tape neat and straight is important but so long as you take your time and get it right - it works a treat. Thanks again dude!
Hell yeah Grant! This is so rad to hear. It's so awesome how well it works eh? The hardest part is laying the tape, then rolling it back up for the other side haha. Thanks for the feedback on the tip!
Tuned in cause I just LOVE hacks for working on bikes. I do own a Seal Driver but loved that electrical tape method so much, Imma try it next fork seal change out (2 weeks). And rolling it back up is just silly, I got prolly 50 rolls of that stuff........and best part is it's FREE to me.
Very clever! I think if one split a toilet paper tube lengthwise and then wrapped it around the fork, it would make a great guide for ensuring the electrical tape is placed parallel to the seal.
I don’t work on bike professionally either. I am a professional automotive technician and own a repair shop and I’ll say I have a ton of different seal installation tools I have more tools and equipment then most any shops but still most of the times you can’t even use them because there are so many different sizes and sometimes they don’t fit anyways. I use sockets and pieces from a master balljoint installation tool kit and a hub tamer kit way more then actual seal tools which is funny and I’m sure any other auto technicians out there will say the same thing lol. I worked at a new car dealership before so we had every factory seal tool but half the time it was easier and faster to use something else.
even if you bought the tool and used it once you would still be off cheaper then sending your bike to the stealership. i don't work on bikes proffesionally either but i sure hate dealerships, waiting times, ridiculous rates, what ever i'll do it all myself and buy the tools necessary. even iif use it once or twice it's still cheaper and i learn something along the way. i only bring my bikes to the dealership for tires i bought myself whilst i can wait for them to change them. Stealerships are horrible.
Your tape idea was brilliant. I used a strip of Gorilla tape and with a very light coat of grease on the inside and the outside of the seal, it dropped right in with minimal effort. Saved me the cost of buying a seal driver. Thanks!!
Thanks for this. I wanted a Motion Pro driver but decided to try your electrical tape method. This is the first set of shocks I rebuilt. Using this method saved me 70 CAD. When I find something like this that saves me money I make a 20 dollar donation to a charity. This donation will go to CKUA during their emergency fundraiser. They were the first public broadcaster in Alberta and are fantastic with all genres of music. I already contributed to this campaign and this will be a bit more. It is my way of thanking content creators along with a thumbs up.
I bought one of those fork seals drivers that are adaptive to diferent sizes of fork "35 - 45mm" they say. i managed to put the first one in but i realized that the screws where about to break from the plastic inserts, and when i was trying to install the second one , they snapped and flew all over the place... Luckly i saw your video and it saved me Thank you so much. worked much better than the expensive crap that i bought. A word of advise If anyone reading this is still thinking of buying a fork seal driver then buy one specific for your fork dimension and forget the ones that adapt to diferent sizes with screws...
Great video! Absolutely just annihilated a fork seal in garage because I didn't feel like waiting to get a seal driver. And now I find this video lol. Thanks for the good content!
What ive done in the past that worked pretty well was using an old piece of pvc. (Roughly the size of the fork in working on) and just cut a slit like when you use the old for seal. And clean it up so it wont damage the new seal, it worked well for me always with a soft hammer or even using the pvc as a kind of slide hammer. Great video.
This tape trick is a great idea and it works! When I first started replacing my own fork seals we used a PVC pipe and it worked well but after investing in the tools these are a life saver and they are machined to hit the edge of the seal and clear the seal lip. I usually replace fork seals a lot in the spring and buying these tools were worth it for me!! Thanks for sharing this video!
Just use 2 inch plastic pipe from your local hardware store as a fork seal driver. It's cheap and effective. But in my opinion, just get the proper tool for the job.
I think the electrical tape idea is fantastic! Perfect size every time! I usually try to find a piece of PVC pipe that has a close fit with the fork tube, cut it so it extends all the way over the slider, and tap it in with a rubber mallet. But the electrical tape idea seems flawless. Tape, sadly, isn't cheap anymore either so re-using it is a good idea.
If I ever run in to you....I owe you a beverage of your choice!!! Thank YOu!!! The electric tape trick worked flawlessly! I have a 2015 KTM Adventure R and was servicing the forks...The seal driver I have is supposed to be "universal up to 50 mm" My KTM is 48 MM.....Well it's NOT universal! I was in a jam...tools spread out in driveway (I don't have a garage)...about to rain...time crunch for other reasons....went to find advice on "universal seal driver" and see online what Cycle gear had to sell....found this...and it worked! I swear it worked BETTER than using a seal driver! I never use fork bullets...This time I used a rubber/latex glove over the top.
