Arthur suggests Helen go to visit her father who is sick. Helen does so and visits with her brother Frederick at the same time. This is the first time we hear his name, by the way. When she returns to Grassdale, Arthur is gone. He left a note saying he had to go to London for something urgent. He gets back in the summer after a couple of months away. Helen is unhappy with him for abandoning her again. Her father dies soon after Arthur's return, and Arthur says she must not go to the funeral, because he needs her to stay with him. She retorts that it wasn't the case when he was in London for so long. He says it's different when he is home. He also doesn't want her to wear black for very long, as is the custom after a family member dies.
In September Huntingdon's group of friends comes back for hunting season. Helen doesn't get much time to herself. They men are obnoxious drunks at times, with the exception of Walter Hargraves, who only takes a little alcohol, and Lord Lowborough, who is a teetotaler. Annabella, Lowboroughs wife, berates her husband for coming in to where the women are, while the other gentlemen are beginning their binge drinking. She actually wishes he would get drunk with the other men. He dejectedly leaves the women and walks outside in the gloom instead. Hattersley gets extra drunk and abusive. He tries to force alcohol into Lowborough. He grabs his wife roughly and demands she tell him in front of everybody why she is crying. When she does not, Helen speaks up and says it's because of him. This causes Hattersley to fly into a rage and throw his wife, Milicent, roughly onto the floor. Then he throws a stool and books at Arthur's head. Helen and Milicent are truly dismayed and upset by the behavior of their husbands.
