when watching part 2 and intending to also watch part 3, people absolutely need to *_stop the movie immediatley after the "to be continued" at the end of part 2_* because the whole rest (1 or 2 minutes) is a *trailer for part 3 with lots of spoilers !* _that might not have been _*_too_*_ bad when people needed to wait some time and forgot about it until that part was released, but when watching them shortly one after the other, it should be avoided to see that trailer._

There are many reactors I watch that take notes when they have a question and come back to it later after the review. I like to see people laugh or be impressed about the movie that’s why i like movie reactions but when the reaction is just filled with tones of talking and questions and they miss everything you just want to tell them to shut up and pay attention. I have a friend that’s like this he will ask me everything about the movie and he misses everything because he can’t keep his mouth shut. He even asks me things about a movie that’s new and I have to say I’m watching for the first time too I don’t know. It’s annoying. You can laugh you can talk about the movie on the reaction that’s cool but don’t ask a billion questions it really makes the reaction boring and annoying.
Older classics are actually a lot better than most of the junk that comes out today. If you give them a try you may be surprised how much you like them. For instance, have you seen the original Star Wars trilogy ? Or Indiana Jones ? If you haven’t you are missing out
This is why when you’re in a movie theater no one should be talking and interrupting a movie because it kills the experience and also this is what a lot of people are nowadays they just nitpick and complain and sometimes be a smart ass about everything.
yes, Heidi, and also that the "facts" about eg vampires, werewolves, zombies, and time travel are no real established scientific facts that have to apply to all other movies and must be identical in all of them. yes, in one franchise of movies it should always be consistent and not "internally" contradicting itself, but also no, it can differ a lot between different movies or series and the universe doesn't always automatically explode when meeting yourself.
Near the end, Doc clearly tells Marty he's traveling 30 years into the future. Marty asks him to look him up when he arrives. There should have been no confusion if you'd paid attention. Thumbs up. Glad you both liked it. But to the dude, expand your horizons. A classic movie is a classic movie no matter how "old" you think it is.

Remember that when we were growing up in the 80s and 90s, films made in the 50s & 60s were considered "old" because they were 20 - 30 years old. _Back to the Future_ will be 40 years old next year, so films like BTTF and _The Empire Strikes Back_ are to these younger generations what _Lawrence of Arabia_ and _Casablanca_ were to us in the 80s & 90s. That said, I want to be perfectly clear - even as a kid growing up in the 80s, I LOVED classic movies, and to this day, I still do. IMO films likes _North by Northwest_ or _Pork Chop Hill_ (both released decades before I was born) run circles around anything released today. Tubi is a treasure trove of classic movies, if you're into that sort of thing. I've watched over 90 films in the past 2 years there.
I want to offer y'all some constructive feedback because you seem like nice people and I really want you to succeed at reacting, which is emerging as a new art form and way of reviewing media. I came to appreciate reactions during Covid, because I was so bored and isolated. It was fun to see younger people enjoy the movies, music and standup I liked. And it felt good to see that appreciation passed down the line, knowing those things would enjoy new life. So, bear in mind that not everyone can be successfull doing what you're doing AND that there's a higher purpose to doing it. There is a difference between being honest and being disrespectful. You did both before Marty even appeared. You lost me pretty early. Nobody likes to be reminded of getting older. You mentioned the movie being "Hella old". Thirty is not old. There were two distinct demographics which enjoyed this movie in 1985; Boomers (who were 30 to 50 at the time), and Gen X, their highschool and college aged kids. The retro kitty clock represented the 1950s. The other clocks, varied in style, represented other years to 1985. No, they were not 100 years old, no, they were not antiques. I dropped out fast after that because I knew it wasn't going to be a fun ride. That's how fast you can lose your audience. So, think before you speak. Second, along those same lines, it seems like you upset a lot of people with near constant talking. This frustrates us because we want to enjoy your reactions to the best parts of the movie. If you're talking you can't fully understand and you're not invested. One thing I find endlessly tough to get through is when people stare at the screen with a deer in the headlights expression, not knowing what's going on, asking questions like "Why is he doing that? What's going on?" Be still and all your questions will be answered. Which brings me to my third point. Remember that EVERYTHING MEANS SOMETHING! You were told everything you needed to know in the opening. Infact, I've never seen a more ingenious means of film exposition than in this movie. Advice: Get over your reluctance to watch "old" movies because cinema is just over 100 years old. As far as art forms go, it is barely a blip on the radar. Some of the films people study in college, Citizen Kane, Metropolis and others, are "old". Read books on film, the language of film through cinematography, soundtrack, and through metaphor and symbols. I wish you well.
Plutonium is a real element that has to be man made because it doesn't exist in nature. It's produced in a nuclear reactor when uranium 238 (which is not thermally fissile) absorbs a neutron to become plutonium 239 (which IS thermally fissile) and subsequently used to power said reactor. Plutonium is essentially how a nuclear reactor creates it's own fuel to power itself.
I think it's insane how scientists were first messing with this stuff and just with the slip of a screw driver those scientists had to accept that they about to die in within a few days.
Plutonium does in fact occur in nature. In pitchblende ore, the ore that contains uranium, spontaneous fission can release excess neutrons in the same way it does in a controlled reaction. Because of the relatively low concentration, this doesn't have the same intensity as a reaction with concentrated fuel. However, it does indeed occur that some of the released neutrons are absorbed by other uranium nuclei, producing P-239 naturally, at a concentration of 0.000000001% in pitchblende, or one part in 100 billion.

Professional trained musicians are generally familiar with tons of blues and jazz standards and would be able to get the idea after 1 or 2 bars of the music. The unlikelyhood is how tight they played right off the bat, but it can and does happen in jam sessions all the time.

Hey AJ and Selena, a little history: Michael J. Fox was the breakout star on a popular TV series called Family Ties (starting in 1982) and it ultimately ran 7 seasons. TV viewers could have watched Michael J. for at least 3 seasons before going to see him in BTTF in 1985.
Well it’s really not that surprising considering that a lot of people nowadays don’t even know how many stars are in the American flag. That certainly tells you something.

Actually, most movies of the past -- just like most movies today -- are terrible. You just have a selective memory and nostalgia for older films. That said, there are great movies that these two would enjoy from every year since 1932. But most movies from any year are forgettable garbage.

If you don't think that's "old" by film standards, you're going to have a REALLY rough time through your 50s and 60s... 1950s/60's music was literally defined as the "oldies" genre a mere 20 years later. When I was (exactly) your age, I played a high-school dance... While chatting and breaking down our equipment, one of the students I was talking to about music said "You're pretty cool for and OLD dude". OUCH... I still play and smoke a bit, and (most times) don't feel a day over 40 but you can't stop reality. Get ready for it, man. Party on, but relax. :))

There was a SUPER popular tv show called Family Ties and Michael was a chief character in it at a high schooler. They wanted him for this movie because of his comedic timing but the show had him under contract so they gave the role to another actor but mid way through the filming of this film they KNEW that they had to get Michael for the role so they did a whole thing where he worked on both of those things at the same time. Believe me, he was the only one who could do justice to the character

The other band members could play along with Marty even though they'd never heard the song before because he told them it's a blues riff in B and to follow the "changes". So, being musicians, they now know the song is in the key of B and it's a Blues. They're probably guessing it's something like a standard 12-bar blues which will make sense to them. "Follow the changes" just means to pay attention to the chord progression (when the chords "change" from one chord to the next in a specific sequence.) If you go to any local "open-mic" jam in almost any town, you'll see musicians who may not even know each other and one of them might play a song the others don't know but if he just gives them the basic info (for example, lets say, it's a 12-bar blues in the key of A) then the other musicians will be able to play along because, at it's core, a 12-bar Blues is pretty simple stuff.

You think Reagan was in disbelief. I can't tell you how much other people were, election night, 1980. Reagan was a B movie actor (notice his name on the theater marquee in 1955 scene) and up until then, people who became president had a LONG history of public service. Reagan had been governor of CA before he became president, but it was still a shock to many.
Plutonium is a real thing. They didn't play the lottery back then. According to the U.S. Dept. of Labor something that cost 5 cents in 1955 would cost 58 cents today. Calvin Klein started in 1968. Colored underwear for men was very common in the 80s so Marty wearing purple underwear wouldn't have been unusual. Selena hit the nail on the head when she said when Marty sees himself at the mall when Doc gets shot it sets up a time loop. Which means at the beginning of the movie when Doc gets shot 1955 Marty was always off to the side watching it happen and he always will be there forever because every time Marty goes back to 1955 and returns to 1985 causes the loop to go around completely. Regarding there being two cars, the DeLorean Marty left on Main street when he returned from the past doesn't conflict with the DeLorean at the mall because of the time loop. Though both versions of the car exist in the same time briefly in reality there is only the one car because Marty goes back in time. Time travel stories are so much fun because they always set up paradoxes that twist my brain! LOL Thanks for a great reaction to a great movie.
Actually not a loop. Marty made changes in time. A new timeline was established The first time it was Twin Pines When he came back, it was Lone Pine. His dad was a nerd the first time and lacked confidence. Biff was still a bully. Once he went back, Biff and his dad changed because of him. Doc had been killed, but survived because of Marty. He would not have survived unless Marty had gone back and left the note. Again, NOT a loop, a new timeline.

It can actually be really hard to remember what a person's face looks like, if they aren't around as a reference. People can have a difficult time conjuring up a mental image of even someone as close as their own parents, after a few years of them being gone, and that's after knowing them for years. Marty's parents only saw "Calvin Klein" a couple of times over the span of a week, in the 1950s. By the time Marty looks like the "Calvin" they met, it's been three decades ago. In the meantime, they've been with Marty nearly every day of his life, watching his appearance gradually change over the years, until he looks the way he does in 1985. They wouldn't look at him one day and suddenly think, "Hey, you look exactly like Calvin Klein," because they've watched him grow. That and, in all likelihood, they have retained nothing but the vaguest recollection of what "Calvin" generally looked like, nor are there any pictures of him to remind them. His voice would likely be even harder to remember. Honestly, given the way memory works, the closest they'd come to comparing Marty to "Calvin" would be if Lorraine smelled her son, and possibly had a vague memory of Calvin smelling like that, the day her father hit him with the car. After all, it was her pillow he slept on... Scent is one of the strongest memories we retain. Even decades later, you can catch a whiff of some scent, and it will revive a memory of baking Christmas cookies with your mother, that you didn't even realize you still had. - This isn't closed loop time travel, so this isn't a situation where Marty always went back in time and always was meant to do what he did. If that had been the case, Marty wouldn't have been able to change anything from the way it was at the beginning of the movie. Thus, Mayor Wilson became mayor on his own, which Marty then told to Wilson in the past, and then he became mayor again. The only change was that the inspiration to become mayor came to him earlier than it did, originally. Likewise, Marty could only give Chuck Berry the idea for Johnny B. Goode, because he'd already heard Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. The song was still 100 percent Berry's creation. Marty isn't creating those people's history, he's just slightly changing the way it originally happened. Ultimately, the only people whose lives he really changes are his parents' and Biff's. All of that is just to say that I feel like it's important for Goldie and Berry to get the credit they deserve: Their achievements are their own, not Marty's.
I remember watching a series of Marx Brothers movies for the first time with my friend back in about 1970, we were teenagers, and we couldn't believe we hadn't even heard of them before. We were in stitches, easily the funniest movies I'd ever seen to that point, and I've never underestimated or looked down on old movies ever since.
1:02:04 (How would the band know to jump in) -- Without diving deep into music theory and live improv, basically the bandmembers are pros at playing their instruments, playing by ear (no sheet music) and playing together. With many years of playing together as a band, they've mastered listening to each other, and playing intuitively (playing what they feel will work in the moment). -- So that foundation being laid, Marty gives them basic instructions on genre, key, and watching him for changes between verses, chorus, bridge, etc. The first few seconds of his intro riff gave the drummer and the band members an idea of the rhythm and tempo. -- With Marty doing the lead guitar melody and vocals, all they needed to do was play the backing parts. Because of their experience they were able to keep up while he was playing a simple straightforward 4/4 groove, but once he went off key, off tempo, off time, they tried to keep it going but he was too dissonent and unpredictable. In real life, the actual song came out 3 years later, so it wasn't too far ahead of its time in 1955.

Michael J Fox was a HUGE TV Star when he was asked to replace Eric Stoltz in Back to The Future. He worked on the sitcom Family Ties during the week and filmed this movie on weekends and Nights. MJF played Alex Keaton on Family Ties a very popular nighttime sitcom. He was the star of the show. Everyone already knew who he was when this movie premiered.

There's a prevailing attitude from some reactors who didn't grow up watching alot of movies that people didn't know how to make movies until they were born. They never say those words, but that's how it comes across.
I didn't stick around after their commentary on how old the clocks were. I don't think I have ever seen a reaction video get so many unkid but fair comments. Lesson: Don't alienate your audience.
So THEY gave the movie a chance after having a pre-conceived notion, and loved it, while you left due to your own assumption of what their reaction would be... The irony. ;-) They DID chat a lot during the film without pausing it, so maybe you dodged the bullet there.
1. Cranky principal Strickland/James Tolkan also played the ship's squadron leader in "Top Gun". 2. The teacher that tells Marty, "I'm afraid you're just too darn loud" is Huey Lewis himself. (Heart of rock and roll) 3. Eric Stoltz was first cast as Marty, but he didn't play well with others and didn't produce what they were looking for, so he was fired. Some of his long shots are still in the movie. 4. The flammable material set on fire with the model exercise had to have been put there on purpose. 5. It's always fun to see how people react to the Marty and his mom car scene. 6. George McFly/Crispin Glover didn't like that the story ended with the family being prosperous. 7. Twin Pines Mall becomes Lone Pine Mall when Marty takes one out when he goes back to 1955. 8. IMVHO part II is the best of the trifecta. 9. If you haven't already checkout an OUTSTANDING movie where Christopher Lloyd plays the heavy you must do "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".

Marty sleeping in her room did Not mean sleeping with her. That meant she would sleep on a couch and give a guest a room. As odd as it seems people did not think like that in the 50's. It was a Much more innocent time. Watching movies from or about that era through the mindset or the filter of the 2000's so much is lost by injecting the horrible loss of innocence. LOL there's always that question of whether or not George and Lorraine would find something weird about seeing how much their youngest kid looking like the guy who essentially got them together. The rationale is: too many years passing. I mean, as important as Marty technically is to them, he was only in their lives for not even a week. Try thinking back to someone you might've made friends with 30 years ago. You might have the general memory of them, but you won't necessarily remember EXACTLY how they looked, unless they were a consistent presence in your life. Shit, there are folks from high school that i don't remember unless I looked in a yearbook lol.
Exactly. So many people treat this as some kind of plot hole or unanswered question, it never seems to occur to people that people don't remember faces that well after 30 years. And like @gotreactions said above me, it's not like he was born with that face. There wouldn't be anything to "recognize" until he was maybe 14.
Fun fact: the guy that at the beginning said in the audition that Marty's band is just "too loud" is a band member of the Huey Lewis and the News, the band that actually sang that song :)
The first travel experiment explained: The DeLorean's "destination" is preset in the car. For example, if it's 1AM and you set your "destination" to 2AM, then you'd time travel exactly 1 hour into the future (relative to the origin time, which is 1AM). In this case, the DeLorean vanishes at 1:20 AM (origin time), and was preset to travel 1 minute into the future, so it's "destination" is 1:21 AM (destination time). Time never stops ticking, so once the DeLorean departs, Doc, Marty, and the audience must now wait 1 minute until 1:21 AM elapses -- that's why the DeLorean reappears on it's own -- we've reached the time in which it was sent (it's destination time). Likewise, if you sent the DeLorean 1 YEAR into the future, you could leave the mall and return 1 year later to see it reappear (because again, you've reached the time period in which you sent it). Now for the stopwatches: From Einstein's frame of reference, the trip through time is instantaneous; he doesn't have to wait 1 minute to arrive at 1:21 AM, because he time traveled to that date. Just as if you traveled 1 year into the future, you'd arrive in 2025 instantly, rather than having to wait 1 year.
Michael J. Fox was in a hit sitcom for years, before and after this. It was called Family Ties - - very funny show, great cast, and he was brilliant on it. During those years he made a bunch of movies.

I can tell you've never hung around professional musicians... this kind of thing comes as naturally to them as breathing does to you. This is basically how they create songs. One will play something, the next gets inspired by it enough to add their own flair to things, and it just snowballs from there. If you ever get the chance to hang with a bunch of musicians when they're having a 'jam session" (basically, just freestyling off one another, totally unrehearsed) it will blow your mind how good they can sound.

The DeLorean's combustion engine runs on ordinary gasoline; only the flux capacitor & time circuits require plutonium. Regarding "two cars:" Selena, you mention that it will "come back eventually." No, because it _already has._ The DeLorean we see vanish in the parking lot is Marty _departing_ for 1955. Since he sets his return time to 10 minutes before he left 1985, then technically - the "2nd car" appears in the street in front of the Clock Tower 10 minutes before the "1st car" disappears at the mall (this is why he's able to see his past self in the parking lot). The loop is thus complete, so there is no other car "arriving" because _it's already arrived._ - it's the one Marty has just arrived in.

BTW, Plutonium is definitely a real element. Used in nuclear reactions. Also with regard to the other names, I think the “Jigawatts” are kinda supposed to be Gigawatts (aka 1 billion watts), they just pronounced it strangely - either that or they’ve made up a new prefix that doesn’t actually exist. And while I’m talking technical terms, “flux capacitor” is kind of a weird choice of name in my opinion. It’s not that it is improper, but all capacitors function by storing energy with electric flux, so saying “flux capacitor” would be kinda like saying a “volume container” or “sound headphones” - kind of a redundant description rather than a name that describes something special.
Plutonium doesn't exist in nature (that we have found) as it is so radioactive, it decays down to other elements. It has an atomic number of 94 - uranium has an active number of 92, the highest atomic number of naturally occurring elements. In theory, one isotope of Plutonium has a half-life long enough some might still be around from the earliest days of the universe, but hasn't been found. Uranium is named after planet Uranus. No. 93 is neptunium is named after Neptune and Plutonium, after Pluto. (All the higher elements are radioactive, at least the ones we've been able to make so far.) It was explained by the producers, the reason why Marty and the Doc are friends because Marty once broke into the Doc’s house. Instead of calling the police Doc had Marty walk and feed his dog Einstein as a way of restitution.
Re some of the comments: I know it can be frustrating when you know something that someone else doesn't (especially if it's considered common knowledge) but if you're not respectful to that person about it they will close themselves off from any interest of wanting to learn more about it. TO AJ & Selena, just keep being honest in your reactions. in this case the only time there were 2 Martys was for that 10 minutes when Future Marty came back early. The first Marty then vanished to 1955, and Future Marty takes over in 1985. It all makes sense, in a totally confusing kind of way.

By Marty going back to 1985 he teleports out of the storm, allowing 2 Marty's to exist at 1 point of time temporarily. The past Marty always has to start the time loop of going back to 1955 while future marty closes or ends it once he returns to 1985. Should be noted: once the past Marty leaves 1985, the present Marty or post 1955 Marty can no longer return to his original future.

To clairify from the start of the film, Doc sends his dog Einstien 1 minute into the future, but when you actually time it, it's 1 min and 21 sec, like the 1.21 gigawatts thing.
As someone who saw this film in the theatre when I was 15 years old in 1985, watching it again with you two was the BEST! If I had to pick a film that you would call the most "Fun", it would be this film!
All the guitar fun facts in this movie! From the tiny Yellow "Chiquita" in the beginning, a one-off custom build from a master crafter. To the 1958 (yes, 1958) Gibson red hollowbody electric at the 1950's dance, that guitar hadnt been invented yet. The correct 1955 version was too big and made Marty look tiny, well.. tinier than usual. But my favorite is the scene where Marty puts headphones on sleeping George and blasts Van Halen. The guitar you hear is Eddie Van Halen's iconic yellow/black striped "Bumble Bee" guitar. In 2004, EVH placed that guitar in the casket with Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott, fallen guitarist from the band Pantera. The guitar that saved the space time continuum is buried with Dimebag! True story!
Marty didn’t actually intend on time traveling after Doc was shot! He just jumped into the car to get away and when Doc was showing him how the target time worked after Einstein got back he was playing with the controls so when Marty took off trying to get away from the Syrians the time destination was still set on the date that Doc had the vision of the component that would make the time travel work. That’s why he went back to that date in 1955. Doc said he remembered the exact date because he fell in his house and was knocked out. When he regained consciousness he had the idea for the flux capacitor

No, they didnt hate him because of his dad, and Marty had no idea Doc was building a time machine. Fox was already known for the tv show Family Ties, which was going into season 3 as this film was being made. Guys, it's supposed to look real. That's the idea. The dog didn't go back in time. Plutonium was first drveloped in 1940 from Uranium. It can be used to sustain reactions in nuclear reactors and atomic bombs. Purple underwear: Call it the Miami Vice effect. Pastels were all the rage in the 80's. And I believe Prince was rather fond of purple, so I dont know what the big deal is there. The Florence Nightingale Effect is real. The real Delorean was badly underpowered, and didn't sound like the one in this movie. It had an average 6 cylinder engine of the 80's technology, so it was pretty lame. Many owners have opted to swap in more powerful engines. Marty clearly said his scheme with his mom was going to be an act. He wasn't really going to try to make a move. Musicians know how to do as he said, meaning follow the key changes. That's all they're basically doing. It is a language all its own. The plutonium was for the time travel. The car itself still ran on gas. Its not a loop. He made changes. A new timeline was made. He came back into the new timeline, but only a few minutes, and he did nothing to affect it. Youd be amazed how much people forget from their younger days. It was predicted that in the future, we would have portable fusion reactors that would use common trash to make power. There are 3 movies. Again, it's not a repeating loop. A new timeline was created. It gets more complicated in 2, so take aspirin if you dare to watch.
Michael J Fox starred in a very popular sitcom called Family Ties in the 80s.He was already a household name from that show. He was huge in the 80s. He did do another movie called Bright Light aBig City and that movie was pretty dark.

The first back to the future movie is a perfect film. Literally (in both the actual proper use of the term as well as the incorrect way everyone uses it). If you read about or hear a lecture about how to write a perfect movie script the first Back to the Future is the example they use. It's textbook film writing. I remember liking the other two when I was a kid and went back to them when I got older and they don't really hold up. There's an interview with Christopher Lloyd where he says whenever he's asked which of the three is his favorite he always says the third one, because that's the one that everyone hates.

There are many reactors I watch that take notes when they have a question and come back to it later after the review. I like to see people laugh or be impressed about the movie that’s why i like movie reactions but when the reaction is just filled with tones of talking and questions and they miss everything you just want to tell them to shut up and pay attention. I have a friend that’s like this he will ask me everything about the movie and he misses everything because he can’t keep his mouth shut. He even asks me things about a movie that’s new and I have to say I’m watching for the first time too I don’t know. It’s annoying. You can laugh you can talk about the movie on the reaction that’s cool but don’t ask a billion questions it really makes the reaction boring and annoying.
Older classics are actually a lot better than most of the junk that comes out today. If you give them a try you may be surprised how much you like them. For instance, have you seen the original Star Wars trilogy ? Or Indiana Jones ? If you haven’t you are missing out

Near the end, Doc clearly tells Marty he's traveling 30 years into the future. Marty asks him to look him up when he arrives. There should have been no confusion if you'd paid attention.

Remember that when we were growing up in the 80s and 90s, films made in the 50s & 60s were considered "old" because they were 20 - 30 years old. _Back to the Future_ will be 40 years old next year, so films like BTTF and _The Empire Strikes Back_ are to these younger generations what _Lawrence of Arabia_ and _Casablanca_ were to us in the 80s & 90s.
That said, I want to be perfectly clear - even as a kid growing up in the 80s, I LOVED classic movies, and to this day, I still do. IMO films likes _North by Northwest_ or _Pork Chop Hill_ (both released decades before I was born) run circles around anything released today.
Tubi is a treasure trove of classic movies, if you're into that sort of thing. I've watched over 90 films in the past 2 years there.
I want to offer y'all some constructive feedback because you seem like nice people and I really want you to succeed at reacting, which is emerging as a new art form and way of reviewing media.
I came to appreciate reactions during Covid, because I was so bored and isolated. It was fun to see younger people enjoy the movies, music and standup I liked. And it felt good to see that appreciation passed down the line, knowing those things would enjoy new life. So, bear in mind that not everyone can be successfull doing what you're doing AND that there's a higher purpose to doing it.
There is a difference between being honest and being disrespectful. You did both before Marty even appeared. You lost me pretty early.
Nobody likes to be reminded of getting older. You mentioned the movie being "Hella old". Thirty is not old. There were two distinct demographics which enjoyed this movie in 1985; Boomers (who were 30 to 50 at the time), and Gen X, their highschool and college aged kids.
The retro kitty clock represented the 1950s. The other clocks, varied in style, represented other years to 1985. No, they were not 100 years old, no, they were not antiques.
I dropped out fast after that because I knew it wasn't going to be a fun ride. That's how fast you can lose your audience. So, think before you speak.
Second, along those same lines, it seems like you upset a lot of people with near constant talking. This frustrates us because we want to enjoy your reactions to the best parts of the movie. If you're talking you can't fully understand and you're not invested.
One thing I find endlessly tough to get through is when people stare at the screen with a deer in the headlights expression, not knowing what's going on, asking questions like "Why is he doing that? What's going on?" Be still and all your questions will be answered.
Which brings me to my third point. Remember that EVERYTHING MEANS SOMETHING! You were told everything you needed to know in the opening. Infact, I've never seen a more ingenious means of film exposition than in this movie.
Advice: Get over your reluctance to watch "old" movies because cinema is just over 100 years old. As far as art forms go, it is barely a blip on the radar. Some of the films people study in college, Citizen Kane, Metropolis and others, are "old". Read books on film, the language of film through cinematography, soundtrack, and through metaphor and symbols.

Plutonium is a real element that has to be man made because it doesn't exist in nature.
It's produced in a nuclear reactor when uranium 238 (which is not thermally fissile) absorbs a neutron to become plutonium 239 (which IS thermally fissile) and subsequently used to power said reactor. Plutonium is essentially how a nuclear reactor creates it's own fuel to power itself.
I think it's insane how scientists were first messing with this stuff and just with the slip of a screw driver those scientists had to accept that they about to die in within a few days.
Plutonium does in fact occur in nature. In pitchblende ore, the ore that contains uranium, spontaneous fission can release excess neutrons in the same way it does in a controlled reaction. Because of the relatively low concentration, this doesn't have the same intensity as a reaction with concentrated fuel. However, it does indeed occur that some of the released neutrons are absorbed by other uranium nuclei, producing P-239 naturally, at a concentration of 0.000000001% in pitchblende, or one part in 100 billion.
Marty said "give me some blues riff in B, watch me for the changes and try to keep up". Professional trained musicians are generally familiar with tons of blues and jazz standards and would be able to get the idea after 1 or 2 bars of the music. The unlikelyhood is how tight they played right off the bat, but it can and does happen in jam sessions all the time.

Why is a young person hanging out with an older person weird? They have wonderful stories to tell sometimes. I spent most of my time as a kid around older people because they were more interesting. Hey AJ and Selena, a little history: Michael J. Fox was the breakout star on a popular TV series called Family Ties (starting in 1982) and it ultimately ran 7 seasons. TV viewers could have watched Michael J. for at least 3 seasons before going to see him in BTTF in 1985.

Actually, most movies of the past -- just like most movies today -- are terrible. You just have a selective memory and nostalgia for older films. That said, there are great movies that these two would enjoy from every year since 1932. But most movies from any year are forgettable garbage.
I have to see another review of them to see if they are so devoid of all reference to the contemporary past.

While chatting and breaking down our equipment, one of the students I was talking to about music said "You're pretty cool for and OLD dude". OUCH... Back to the Future are timeless classics, never tire of them. I introduced them to my stepson as A little boy. He loved 😍 them thought all god Movie's came in three parts. He may have been right because most good franchise s have at least three good movies in there franchise.
There was a SUPER popular tv show called Family Ties and Michael was a chief character in it at a high schooler. They wanted him for this movie because of his comedic timing but the show had him under contract so they gave the role to another actor but mid way through the filming of this film they KNEW that they had to get Michael for the role so they did a whole thing where he worked on both of those things at the same time. Believe me, he was the only one who could do justice to the character
He also did Teen Wolf a not to bad movie.

The other band members could play along with Marty even though they'd never heard the song before because he told them it's a blues riff in B and to follow the "changes". So, being musicians, they now know the song is in the key of B and it's a Blues. They're probably guessing it's something like a standard 12-bar blues which will make sense to them. "Follow the changes" just means to pay attention to the chord progression (when the chords "change" from one chord to the next in a specific sequence.) If you go to any local "open-mic" jam in almost any town, you'll see musicians who may not even know each other and one of them might play a song the others don't know but if he just gives them the basic info (for example, lets say, it's a 12-bar blues in the key of A) then the other musicians will be able to play along because, at it's core, a 12-bar Blues is pretty simple stuff.

Plutonium is a real thing. They didn't play the lottery back then. According to the U.S. Dept. of Labor something that cost 5 cents in 1955 would cost 58 cents today. Calvin Klein started in 1968. Colored underwear for men was very common in the 80s so Marty wearing purple underwear wouldn't have been unusual. Selena hit the nail on the head when she said when Marty sees himself at the mall when Doc gets shot it sets up a time loop. Which means at the beginning of the movie when Doc gets shot 1955 Marty was always off to the side watching it happen and he always will be there forever because every time Marty goes back to 1955 and returns to 1985 causes the loop to go around completely. Regarding there being two cars, the DeLorean Marty left on Main street when he returned from the past doesn't conflict with the DeLorean at the mall because of the time loop. Though both versions of the car exist in the same time briefly in reality there is only the one car because Marty goes back in time. Time travel stories are so much fun because they always set up paradoxes that twist my brain! LOL Thanks for a great reaction to a great movie.

When he came back, it was Lone Pine. His dad was a nerd the first time and lacked confidence. Biff was still a bully. Once he went back, Biff and his dad changed because of him. Doc had been killed, but survived because of Marty. He would not have survived unless Marty had gone back and left the note. Again, NOT a loop, a new timeline.

Why? Surely there's stuff you don't like. How would you feel if someone said they hope to forget about you as soon as possible, just because you don't like what they like?
It can actually be really hard to remember what a person's face looks like, if they aren't around as a reference. People can have a difficult time conjuring up a mental image of even someone as close as their own parents, after a few years of them being gone, and that's after knowing them for years. Marty's parents only saw "Calvin Klein" a couple of times over the span of a week, in the 1950s. By the time Marty looks like the "Calvin" they met, it's been three decades ago. In the meantime, they've been with Marty nearly every day of his life, watching his appearance gradually change over the years, until he looks the way he does in 1985. They wouldn't look at him one day and suddenly think, "Hey, you look exactly like Calvin Klein," because they've watched him grow. That and, in all likelihood, they have retained nothing but the vaguest recollection of what "Calvin" generally looked like, nor are there any pictures of him to remind them. His voice would likely be even harder to remember.
Honestly, given the way memory works, the closest they'd come to comparing Marty to "Calvin" would be if Lorraine smelled her son, and possibly had a vague memory of Calvin smelling like that, the day her father hit him with the car. After all, it was her pillow he slept on... Scent is one of the strongest memories we retain. Even decades later, you can catch a whiff of some scent, and it will revive a memory of baking Christmas cookies with your mother, that you didn't even realize you still had.

This isn't closed loop time travel, so this isn't a situation where Marty always went back in time and always was meant to do what he did. If that had been the case, Marty wouldn't have been able to change anything from the way it was at the beginning of the movie.
Thus, Mayor Wilson became mayor on his own, which Marty then told to Wilson in the past, and then he became mayor again. The only change was that the inspiration to become mayor came to him earlier than it did, originally.
Likewise, Marty could only give Chuck Berry the idea for Johnny B. Goode, because he'd already heard Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. The song was still 100 percent Berry's creation.
Marty isn't creating those people's history, he's just slightly changing the way it originally happened. Ultimately, the only people whose lives he really changes are his parents' and Biff's.
All of that is just to say that I feel like it's important for Goldie and Berry to get the credit they deserve: Their achievements are their own, not Marty's.

I remember watching a series of Marx Brothers movies for the first time with my friend back in about 1970, we were teenagers, and we couldn't believe we hadn't even heard of them before. We were in stitches, easily the funniest movies I'd ever seen to that point, and I've never underestimated or looked down on old movies ever since.
1:02:04 (How would the band know to jump in) -- Without diving deep into music theory and live improv, basically the bandmembers are pros at playing their instruments, playing by ear (no sheet music) and playing together. With many years of playing together as a band, they've mastered listening to each other, and playing intuitively (playing what they feel will work in the moment). -- So that foundation being laid, Marty gives them basic instructions on genre, key, and watching him for changes between verses, chorus, bridge, etc. The first few seconds of his intro riff gave the drummer and the band members an idea of the rhythm and tempo. -- With Marty doing the lead guitar melody and vocals, all they needed to do was play the backing parts.
Because of their experience they were able to keep up while he was playing a simple straightforward 4/4 groove, but once he went off key, off tempo, off time, they tried to keep it going but he was too dissonent and unpredictable. In real life, the actual song came out 3 years later, so it wasn't too far ahead of its time in 1955.

Michael J Fox was a HUGE TV Star when he was asked to replace Eric Stoltz in Back to The Future. He worked on the sitcom Family Ties during the week and filmed this movie on weekends and Nights. MJF played Alex Keaton on Family Ties a very popular nighttime sitcom. He was the star of the show. Everyone already knew who he was when this movie premiered.

1. Cranky principal Strickland/James Tolkan also played the ship's squadron leader in "Top Gun".
2. The teacher that tells Marty, "I'm afraid you're just too darn loud" is Huey Lewis himself. (Heart of rock and roll)
3. Eric Stoltz was first cast as Marty, but he didn't play well with others and didn't produce what they were looking for, so he was fired. Some of his long shots are still in the movie.
4. The flammable material set on fire with the model exercise had to have been put there on purpose.
5. It's always fun to see how people react to the Marty and his mom car scene.
6. George McFly/Crispin Glover didn't like that the story ended with the family being prosperous.
7. Twin Pines Mall becomes Lone Pine Mall when Marty takes one out when he goes back to 1955.
8. IMVHO part II is the best of the trifecta.

Marty sleeping in her room did Not mean sleeping with her. That meant she would sleep on a couch and give a guest a room. As odd as it seems people did not think like that in the 50's. It was a Much more innocent time. Watching movies from or about that era through the mindset or the filter of the 2000's so much is lost by injecting the horrible loss of innocence. LOL there's always that question of whether or not George and Lorraine would find something weird about seeing how much their youngest kid looking like the guy who essentially got them together. The rationale is: too many years passing. I mean, as important as Marty technically is to them, he was only in their lives for not even a week. Try thinking back to someone you might've made friends with 30 years ago. You might have the general memory of them, but you won't necessarily remember EXACTLY how they looked, unless they were a consistent presence in your life. Shit, there are folks from high school that i don't remember unless I looked in a yearbook lol.
Exactly. So many people treat this as some kind of plot hole or unanswered question, it never seems to occur to people that people don't remember faces that well after 30 years. And like @gotreactions said above me, it's not like he was born with that face. There wouldn't be anything to "recognize" until he was maybe 14.
Fun fact: the guy that at the beginning said in the audition that Marty's band is just "too loud" is a band member of the Huey Lewis and the News, the band that actually sang that song :)

The first travel experiment explained:
The DeLorean's "destination" is preset in the car. For example, if it's 1AM and you set your "destination" to 2AM, then you'd time travel exactly 1 hour into the future (relative to the origin time, which is 1AM). In this case, the DeLorean vanishes at 1:20 AM (origin time), and was preset to travel 1 minute into the future, so it's "destination" is 1:21 AM (destination time).
Time never stops ticking, so once the DeLorean departs, Doc, Marty, and the audience must now wait 1 minute until 1:21 AM elapses -- that's why the DeLorean reappears on it's own -- we've reached the time in which it was sent (it's destination time). From Einstein's frame of reference, the trip through time is instantaneous; he doesn't have to wait 1 minute to arrive at 1:21 AM, because he time traveled to that date. Just as if you traveled 1 year into the future, you'd arrive in 2025 instantly, rather than having to wait 1 year.

Ahh.. I can tell you've never hung around professional musicians... this kind of thing comes as naturally to them as breathing does to you. This is basically how they create songs. One will play something, the next gets inspired by it enough to add their own flair to things, and it just snowballs from there. If you ever get the chance to hang with a bunch of musicians when they're having a 'jam session" (basically, just freestyling off one another, totally unrehearsed) it will blow your mind how good they can sound.

Regarding "two cars:"
Selena, you mention that it will "come back eventually." No, because it _already has._ The DeLorean we see vanish in the parking lot is Marty _departing_ for 1955. Since he sets his return time to 10 minutes before he left 1985, then technically - the "2nd car" appears in the street in front of the Clock Tower 10 minutes before the "1st car" disappears at the mall (this is why he's able to see his past self in the parking lot). The loop is thus complete, so there is no other car "arriving" because _it's already arrived._ - it's the one Marty has just arrived in.

Also with regard to the other names, I think the “Jigawatts” are kinda supposed to be Gigawatts (aka 1 billion watts), they just pronounced it strangely - either that or they’ve made up a new prefix that doesn’t actually exist.
And while I’m talking technical terms, “flux capacitor” is kind of a weird choice of name in my opinion. It’s not that it is improper, but all capacitors function by storing energy with electric flux, so saying “flux capacitor” would be kinda like saying a “volume container” or “sound headphones” - kind of a redundant description rather than a name that describes something special.
The "jigawatts" was a mispronunciation. People mispronounce my last name the same way all the time (hard g vs soft g).
Plutonium doesn't exist in nature (that we have found) as it is so radioactive, it decays down to other elements. It has an atomic number of 94 - uranium has an active number of 92, the highest atomic number of naturally occurring elements. In theory, one isotope of Plutonium has a half-life long enough some might still be around from the earliest days of the universe, but hasn't been found.
Uranium is named after planet Uranus. No. 93 is neptunium is named after Neptune and Plutonium, after Pluto. (All the higher elements are radioactive, at least the ones we've been able to make so far.)
All the elements higher than uranium are human-made. Plutonium was first created in 1940-'41.

It was explained by the producers, the reason why Marty and the Doc are friends because Marty once broke into the Doc’s house. Instead of calling the police Doc had Marty walk and feed his dog Einstein as a way of restitution.
The end of the movie wasn't nearly as confusing as you made it out to be, lol.
Re some of the comments: I know it can be frustrating when you know something that someone else doesn't (especially if it's considered common knowledge) but if you're not respectful to that person about it they will close themselves off from any interest of wanting to learn more about it.

in this case the only time there were 2 Martys was for that 10 minutes when Future Marty came back early. The first Marty then vanished to 1955, and Future Marty takes over in 1985. It all makes sense, in a totally confusing kind of way.

By Marty going back to 1985 he teleports out of the storm, allowing 2 Marty's to exist at 1 point of time temporarily. The past Marty always has to start the time loop of going back to 1955 while future marty closes or ends it once he returns to 1985. Should be noted: once the past Marty leaves 1985, the present Marty or post 1955 Marty can no longer return to his original future.

To clairify from the start of the film, Doc sends his dog Einstien 1 minute into the future, but when you actually time it, it's 1 min and 21 sec, like the 1.21 gigawatts thing.
As someone who saw this film in the theatre when I was 15 years old in 1985, watching it again with you two was the BEST!

All the guitar fun facts in this movie! From the tiny Yellow "Chiquita" in the beginning, a one-off custom build from a master crafter. To the 1958 (yes, 1958) Gibson red hollowbody electric at the 1950's dance, that guitar hadnt been invented yet. The correct 1955 version was too big and made Marty look tiny, well.. tinier than usual. But my favorite is the scene where Marty puts headphones on sleeping George and blasts Van Halen. The guitar you hear is Eddie Van Halen's iconic yellow/black striped "Bumble Bee" guitar. In 2004, EVH placed that guitar in the casket with Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott, fallen guitarist from the band Pantera. The guitar that saved the space time continuum is buried with Dimebag! True story!
Marty didn’t actually intend on time traveling after Doc was shot! He just jumped into the car to get away and when Doc was showing him how the target time worked after Einstein got back he was playing with the controls so when Marty took off trying to get away from the Syrians the time destination was still set on the date that Doc had the vision of the component that would make the time travel work. That’s why he went back to that date in 1955. Doc said he remembered the exact date because he fell in his house and was knocked out. When he regained consciousness he had the idea for the flux capacitor

No, they didnt hate him because of his dad, and Marty had no idea Doc was building a time machine. Fox was already known for the tv show Family Ties, which was going into season 3 as this film was being made. Guys, it's supposed to look real. That's the idea. The dog didn't go back in time. Plutonium was first drveloped in 1940 from Uranium. It can be used to sustain reactions in nuclear reactors and atomic bombs. Purple underwear: Call it the Miami Vice effect. Pastels were all the rage in the 80's. And I believe Prince was rather fond of purple, so I dont know what the big deal is there. The Florence Nightingale Effect is real. The real Delorean was badly underpowered, and didn't sound like the one in this movie. It had an average 6 cylinder engine of the 80's technology, so it was pretty lame. Many owners have opted to swap in more powerful engines. Marty clearly said his scheme with his mom was going to be an act. He wasn't really going to try to make a move. Musicians know how to do as he said, meaning follow the key changes. That's all they're basically doing. It is a language all its own. The plutonium was for the time travel. The car itself still ran on gas. Its not a loop. He made changes. A new timeline was made. He came back into the new timeline, but only a few minutes, and he did nothing to affect it. Youd be amazed how much people forget from their younger days. It was predicted that in the future, we would have portable fusion reactors that would use common trash to make power. There are 3 movies. Again, it's not a repeating loop. A new timeline was created. It gets more complicated in 2, so take aspirin if you dare to watch.

The first back to the future movie is a perfect film. Literally (in both the actual proper use of the term as well as the incorrect way everyone uses it). If you read about or hear a lecture about how to write a perfect movie script the first Back to the Future is the example they use. It's textbook film writing.

There's an interview with Christopher Lloyd where he says whenever he's asked which of the three is his favorite he always says the third one, because that's the one that everyone hates.
