    I want to compliment you for showing your vulnerable side on camera, even for something as awkward to show as 'shit I love my dog and he will die some day' because nothing really happened to provoke those tears that strangers can see. Thank you for being a healthy human being, and hopefully showing other (younger) men that it is okay to have such emotions.

    the moments of realization of "I will most likely outlive you" while looking at your pets is one of the more painful things as an owner, IMO only 2nd to losing them. But those moments are stark reminders of mortality for pets and we should all love them as much as we can for as long as we can.

    • @Palitato
      @Palitato 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My mom has the opposite problem... she rescued a parrot who is about 16-20yo, and she's already almost 60! She looks at him and wonders what the heck she's going to do with him when she's older, since his species can live to be over 70!

    • @elisemiller13
      @elisemiller13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Palitato One is supposed to put a parrot in their will, and if they are really responsible, make sure that is agreed upon by the pet owner. Meanwhile, the details of care ought to be discussed with anyone it will affect. And caregiving decided upon before such a time as current caretakers aren't able. It's simply part of the responsiblity of "pet" ownership.

      Either that or cut the bottom of the ramp so that it’s at an angle and can account for the incline. It has supports all along the middle of the board so the end support shouldn’t be a huge deal. 👌

      Depends what kind of dog you have. Many medium sized dogs live for a long time. Little dogs are champs and will live 16-18 years. Big dogs like huskies and Rottweilers don’t live as long, but just ask yourself: do I make every day a quality day for my dog? If you can answer yes, then that means you are doing your job of making your dog’s life on this planet a good one.

    You should dig a little hole under the end of the ramp and put the ramp in it, then it won’t be sticking out of the ground (idk if that makes sense or not)
    everyone talking about it rotting away if u dig it in, guys it’s pressure treated wood, so it shouldn’t rot anytime in the next like 10 years give or take. That’s more than enough time, in 10 years Morgan might not even be able to do the farm duties anymore 🤷🏽‍♂️

His death was very sad. He was suffering but it was Christmas and no vet was available. He crawled into the kitchen (unable to walk) to see us and back out where we stayed with him until his last gasp less than an hour later. A very noble dog as my Dad put it.

    Thanks for not excluding the emotional part about Toby. Any of us who have loved animals, watched them bond with us (well, it's mutual), get older, and come to that realization that they won't be around forever knows this feeling. My little terrier will turn 12 in two & a half months and has congestive heart failure. She's on 4 meds and actually is in a good stretch, but I told her I won't let her suffer. She has helped to heal me after the loss of a parent and more. I love her so much. I try to stay in the moment, appreciate her, and not ever let her annoy me. She's the most spoiled she has ever been, but she's still a very good girl. Man selectively domesticated them to be COMPANIONS and to bond with us. Dogs are pretty damned good at that. I like the majority of dogs more than I like the majority of people. I love that Toby means that much to you. It actually makes me think that much more of you as a humane farmer (and as a youtuber).

    You've got a good dog and he's got a good owner.
    As for the ramp, you nailed it. Ducks are creatures of routine and hate change. They'll probably grow to accept it if they're around it for a while.

    Redesign suggestion for the ramp: Make it as wide as the doorway. If the end on the ground is too high, dig out a little trench under it to sink it lower for them. And that milled wood is going to get slick with poo and dirt and later, packed snow. They need a surface with some traction.

    • @jkbeattyable

    • @victoriabaker4400

      I kept thinking that ducklings would have a REALLY hard time with that leap, not to mention their feet would go right through those long long holes that are really quite wide. I think it needs cross pieces, and as someone else said, if he dug down the front end it could start at ground level.

    Your small and very valid breakdown over Toby made me breakdown over my dogs.
    It's so hard bonding so much with a creature that gives it's whole life and heart to you but only lives around a decade. But like you said, we have to remind ourselves of that sometimes and cherish the time we have with them.
    This is my first time commenting, but I've followed your videos for a long time now, and honestly you've produced such excellent content that your channel was my comfort show all through my pregnancy and the pandemic and I just really appreciate what you do. Thank you.

    LOL, Toby is so protective of you. Toby is covering you when you are at the most vulnerable state when you are not standing up and moving. Toby is so lucky to have you. People seem to forget that we are all our dogs have. They don’t have building projects, or school or work, or phones or books. Sometimes they get bored, and want interaction. It’s important to remember that when they annoy you like that, they just want to be involved. We are their everything, and I’m so happy to see that you respect that about Toby.

    Crying infront of people is such a strong thing. It's something I struggle with and it's something I look up to you for.
    Crying helps. It's designed to relieve emotions and tension. And it's refreshing to see someone do that without cutting it out of the video completely (which would be understandable, bc it's such a vulnerable thing, but that's why it's so impressive that you left it in).
    And crying is for everyone. It's good for you. (I'm still working on letting myself cry infront of other people, trying to appear strong, even if true strength would be the exact opposite...)

    Oof, your realization with Toby really hit home, but it's such an important reminder for anybody who has a pet of any sort. You're certainly not alone in those feelings, and thank you for being honest enough to show it and express it! My own dog - my very first dog - is a little over ten years old, and while he still has a ton of energy, I find myself hit with that same realization fairly often. I like to think it's a bit premature to be worried about it, but then I notice something that reminds me he isn't as young as I want to see him as, and the worries come right back.
    Watching Toby be all up in your space while you were trying to work was really endearing- of all the places on the farm he could've been, he had to be right there with you! He's just trying to help in his own way, heh.

    My husband and I just talked yesterday about how our eight year old coonhound lab mix is probably the best dog we're ever going to have. He's just so sweet and calm, ready to be there if you need him, happy to stay out of your way if you seem busy. It hit both of us hard that we're probably through half the time we're going to have with him. I think we all go through those realization moments that hit us hard, but it shows that we're human and love our animals as family.

    These random „What about when they‘re gone?“ thoughts are completely normal and i think it‘s a good sign if you love your animal enough to be seriously bothered by it. 😭
    And it‘s a good sign that Tobi wants to be that close to you all the time too. 🥰
    As for the Ducks i‘d say give them some time. Some of them already stepped on the new ramp when they tried to get inside, so it shouldn‘t take that long for them to accept it.
