  • A lonely track and a fire engine what more does a man want to have fun!
    Filmed just before lockdown March 2020. We were due to go back to finish filming and re filming some sections but due to the pandemic it never happened. Nearly a year on ive decided that i just need to edit and upload what footage i did get as best i can. One day hope to get back to the track in it i enjoyed it so much.

    Im a Staffs enthusiast, and am/was friends with many of my local station's firefighters. They told me they once got a ton out of their 1983 Dennis RS133 on a downhill section of the A50 and 95 out of their first Dennis Sabre (S-reg) on the same stretch of road. They also told me that when the fire service sells old retired appliances to the public speed limiters are first fitted.

      Once she's running I'll have to see how much transport would cost, we've done some working out since you came down and we think a full fuel tank will do about 40 miles 😂

    The ladder and top light would’ve caused serious drag. Also, if you get to try this again, try changing gear ‘manually’ on the auto box by holding the gears with the selector & knocking them up when close to max revs. Sometimes the hold on the kick down isn’t sufficient & it will change up before you want it to even though you’ve probably got your foot buried.

    I bet he could get more speed out of a Rosenbuaer 6x6 airport crash tender so popular at European Airports. Low wide stance, smooth aerodynamic front and a massive 550 hp engine should make them easily hit 95 mph and do it inside of 30 seconds despite weighing 55,000 lbs. Those crash tenders are made for high speed travel. I had so much fun with a military mechanic buddy of mine who invited me on board an old Oshkosh P-15 8x8 crash tender back in the 1980s. We got that thing going over 90 mph inside of 30 seconds. Mind you they had two very large engines. Those were also the heaviest fire trucks ever made at 65,000 lbs and they had a beautiful slab sided, blunted front that didn't care about wind resistance.

    • @ProjectMarlin
      @ProjectMarlin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The P-15 is over 130'000lbs which is around 65 tons. The engines in them are 8v92's which combined produce just over 800bhp which would never get it to over 90 in under 30 seconds, my truck has a Detroit 12v92 with 760bhp and weighs 73'000lbs and only does 0-50mph in around 26 seconds with a top designed speed of 75mph. In 1990 it was considered to be one of the fastest ARFF rigs available at the time. The old ARFF rigs including the Oshkosh models seem to have so much myth and legend around there specs but in reality there not as fast or as powerful as people generally think.

    Back in the day before speed limiters, about the time this truck was in service, I passed a fire truck that was on blue lights on the M1, I was driving a loaded 7.5 Leyland DAF 45/130 turbo.

  • @cvince2862
    @cvince2862 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In 1977 I was doing 'blue light' training.
    After passing the HGV test, because my station had a particular type of fire engine, I then had more training in a Dodge (K series, I think) with the full fat Perkins V8, a manual gearbox, and a powered clutch.
    I SAW 94mph on the speedo on the Dorking bypass.
    Can't remember if it was fully laden or whether it had any ladders on top.
    But, what an engine, the noise and rumble was like nothing out there today!

    M8, Drove Dennis most of my FS career. Sabres we had could and did 85. Not fun, but easily achievable. As they got older, they lost 10/15% of speed. Compared to a 2010 Scania, who’s brand new top speed of 72, our 2nd was still the daddy.

    Two great runs there Lawrence. what comes in to play is how many gears you have and what the gear& differential ratio`s are, as how many rpms will gain a set speed. Between 3:31 to 3:45 you can see your phone and speedo roughly match between 74-76 mph. But your rev counter is red lined at 2500 to 2600 RPM. excluding weight weather etc she more or less topped out. if say she is 6 speed box but swapped to 7 speed box with same ratios, she would do more speed for less revs. All that matters she can hit motorway limit and you had fun doing it. cheers ken

    Dennis rapiers were and are. The fastest Dennis fire engine ever built because when they first came out they had six gears and used to get to around 130 miles an hour and this is by my grandad and dad who’s well that still works in the service and grandad used to so you stop power around 130 but the Sabres are slower. if you remove all of the equipment and have an empty tank that should help out around 90 mph because my dad had it going 85 downhill with just the ladder and other locker equipment. They removed six gear in the rapiers because of too many crashes they had with them tipping over crashing into lampposts but overall the ropes were faster and had a really really good brake power my dad said he got one of the rapiers going 100 and stopped in about a mile with his foot half on the floor so you’re better off getting a rapier if you want speed. ❤🎉😅

    I've been driving Sabres fore 18 years operationally and on Motorways, I've had an indicayed 85mph showing on the speedo! I was certainly going 10mph faster than the cars in lanes 2 and 3. It takes a while to get those last few mph though. This was with a fully loaded frontline appliance responding to an emergency. They are so different to drive from a normal lorry, sad that I won't be driving them for much longer 😔.

    • @ianddavidson1
      @ianddavidson1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dennis built the Rapier and Sabre to Fire Service spec. I know they played around with the diff ratios. London Fire Brigade (for example) did not need top speed so a low ration diff gave great acceleration at the expense of top speed. Change the diff, and its slower off the mark, but the top speed is improved. I have seen a report of a Dennis from the experimental dept being clocked on the M1 at 105mph. No idea what power plant was on board but I know they were monkeying around with a big V8 diesel as far back as 1970.

    • @NeilM01989

      @@NeilM01989 It appears that is possible with the right engine /diff combination. The Rapier was certainly capable of high speed. Derbyshire fire and rescue blocked off top gear as it was reported they were being driven too fast. Dennis were without question a remarkable manufacturer.
