    Hi Jonathan, I have been playing for 3 months now. Your advice is perfect! I concentrate on scales, simple songs, and one or two techniques per day. I practice about 45 minutes at a time. I am finally getting consistent "Expert" and "Advanced" ratings on Cellocoach! Short practice times allow me to keep it something I look forward to rather than a chore. Thanks for being there.

    I'm an old beginner. I'm 48 years young and just completed suzuki method book1. I'm learning second position and i'm enjoying the journey so far. I really want to thankyou for your postings on youtube they are very helpful and informative. Cello lessons are very expensive so being able to watch your videos really helps and save lots of money. I subscribed to you and a couple of other cello instructors on youtube and watching these videos helps supplement my lessons. DEEP PRACTICE my instructor was telling me basically the same thing. He told me, practice has to be deliberate, focused and intentional. He says you must practice clear from any distractions and be focused. I just want say thanks.

    Jonathan, thank you for your existence, because 8 months ago I started in this incredible journey and your lessons and videos expire me so much. I am very anxious and this not help. kkk In this short time livining in music’s world, cello particularly, I say patience and persistence are very important words. With your lessons I can glimpse what I would like to play in the cello some day. Thank You very much. Alexandre Sakamoto, 40, São Paulo - Brazil.

    Started cello roughly 2 weeks ago and I have previous experience with the violin. It's mentally hard to slow down, I continually want to achieve the same level of playing the cello as I did with the violin but I have to be patient. Nonetheless, I still prefer the cello's deep notes to the high-pitched whine of my violin XD

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ever so much, the patience is crucial Lyly. We take more effort to play the cello, so allow your body to adapt to the "heaviness" of cello, in comparison to violin.

    Hey Jonathan. Do you have any advice on how to play fast. I have a concert and I'm playing flight of the bumblebee and I can play it slowly but I can't get it up to the desired speed. Do you have any tips

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hnsps 918 Hnsps 918 are you playing long legatos or all separate bowings? Fast = less yet how you “lessen” important. For this except of Tsar Saltan, we need to pay more “gypsy” and less “conservatioire”, like Monti’s Csárdás. Rimsky-Korsakov was a great orchestrator of folk tunes, so keep that in mind when you play this piece. More precise technique RH: Firm fingers, loose palm, agile wrist. LH: almost pulling the string. The thumb is engaged 98% on the fingerboard in all positions. There are two main patterns within the first phase: m. 6-9 is the same as m.16-19 and m.10-12 is like m.39-41. M.56-70 is very much like the m.6-21. The pattern repeats in different positions, and if you use the Leonard Rose edit, you will be fine. As for playing this well at concert, it must be by memory. Practice in compete darkness, first the different sections that are similar. Spend 40hrs on the section m.6-21, 40hrs on the last page, then 40hrs on the chromatic changes, then 40hrs on the position transitions, and finally 40hrs on stitching the pieces together, all at a slow tempo, all very very staccato! Then, turn the lights out and play it 40x all the way through at speeds increasing by two metronome clicks. For each click, say 100-108, play the entire piece either in complete darkness or blindfolded, 5x with no stopping and no grand errors. Eventually, you will arrive at a tempo you can play it well, if you remain staccato, firmly relaxed and totally focused to the point you need not think, it just happens. I am re-learning this piece and documenting my own deep practice this 2019, using the formula I have prescribed here. Yes, you need to train for 200hrs, then révise of an unknown amount of hours, counting a 5x “flawless” rep as a single try. If you are at your neurological peak in myelin, entirely focused and fully invested, the price should take no longer than 100 days (2x sessions per day with a 4 hour break) + revisions.

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really great question too, Hnsps 918. I am legit working on this, using the aforementioned formula. If you know how to deep practice, you will succeed. Hope you have enough time until the concert. As for performance advice, I am mot the guy, at least not now. There are other teachers more attenuated for virtuosic technique, you can ask on YT.

    I would love to play the Game of thrones Theme song - but i can only find versions that are for 2 or more cellos on musescore or solo versions that just dont sound correct. Can you maybe give it a try?

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course I will, MrBlockyTV. The thing is, there are two distinct voices in the theme of The Song of Fire and Ice saga. I arranged it bak in 2012, performed it with a student in 2014 at a local recital, with two cellos. My version is absolutely correct: in C-minor and with all the necessary thematic chord progressions. My arrangement is short, which will be followed by a full duet upload and the separate parts uploaded for you to play-along with.
      Not beating my own drum (or cello ;-): all covers and arrangements uploaded to this channel are in the exact key as their orignal compositions, unless stated (like Meditation in G). So, my upcoming version of "Le Cygne" is in C major, whereas the Shostakovich "Jazz Watlz Nº2", Donizetti "Una Furtiva Lagrima", Bizet "Habanera", Eflman "Edward Scissorhands Medley" and Tchaikovsky "Casse-Noisette Fantasia " are ALL in orignal keys. (all coming Nov/Dec 2018) It is my opinion - as a cellist and teacher - that if you are to learn a song, even an easy arrangement, then you should at least learn the original key.

    • @MrBlockyTV
      @MrBlockyTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh that sounds awesome cant wait for that upload!
      What timeframe have you planed for these videos?
      I started Cello about 2,5 years ago because of that song, by now i can play anyhing i want with a bit of practice but i never found satisfactory version of the song that got this project started.

    I'm an older beginner..... certainly trying my best, at times I feel accomplished by what I'm already managing after 3 lessons..... but also overwhelmed by how much there is to learn..... I'm struggling a just a bit with how long I can practise as my fingers are getting from the strings and the thumb from the bow.... I'd like to be able to play for longer but just not happening yet..... I have 2 kids so trying to focus and practice when they're not in school is almost a waste of time too.......
    I'm eagerly watching your video's and I guess I will get there.....

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will get there, but you will need help from the family. Mommy needs music time, so the kids need to be on board and leave you alone for 90 minutes (15 mins prior, 60 mins of practice and 15 mins after)

    Hi Sir Jonathan...😊
    What are the steps you can advice as a new beginner?
    My son is 5 years old...
    THANK you Sir Jonathan😊😊😊

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 5 years old, maintain his attention. Praise his accomplishments but praise his effort more. A positive emotional imprint is very important at a young age. Have him learn by ear or memory, with a teacher who knows how to be firm yet have fun too. I have had good experience teaching 5-6 year olds, so there will be good and not good days. Patience, positivity and praising effort is the best formula, in my humble opinion.

    Good morning
    I am Shailesh from India and I play violin since 25 years. Now I want to learn cello or upright bass. I can't decide. Is it good if I start with Cello and later add upright bass ? Technically fingering and note spacing looks different. Please guide. Thanks in advance

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Shailesh, the cello and contrebass are different in many respects. Our strings are in 5ths, whilst the bass is in 4ths like a guitar. The range of the cello is quite large, and so the positions are much closer together. Bass is a harmony/continuo instrument, whilst cello can play melodies as much as violins. I recommend you try cello first and then bass, given you are coming from violin, Shailesh, you might want to play more melodies ;-)

      @@CelloCoach Thanks Jonathan for prompt reply. Is cello more difficult than DB? I wish to play rhythm and less notes which is might be possible in DB. Please guide

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DB is more physically demanding and cumbersome, but you play less notes and more rhythm. Maybe you should try both?
