I love this instrument, but some days, like yesterday, I wonder when will it sound musical when I play. Everyday I improve, and I have evidence, but all of the gains are hard won.
An ‹‹ étude ›› is French for "exercise". Literally just that. Think of scales, études and pieces in the context of a sports team training. An player will have to stretch (scales) before completing technique-driven drills (études), then they will commence learning plays and strategies (deep practice) before generally playing the game at the end of their training session (playing the piece). Your études are an important part of your development on cello.
