Cathedral Hive 3.0 (based on Corwen Bells original design - backyardhive.com)

- Hey everybody, here is a video explaining all the various features of the most recent version of my cathedral hives. The customer wanted to make the hive as natural as possible and requested various upgrades. Each upgrade is covered in the video but here is general list of the features: Adjustable Ventilation on top and bottom, screened bottom board with pull out, custom engravings, periscope entrance, mouse guard, bee highway, adjustable follow board, custom copper top/accents, in hive feeder with two 1/2 gallon jars, in hive feeder has sting free screen, double pane full length window, window cover with recessed plate for zero light penetration, optional entrance reducer (not shown), tung oil finish, finger groove handles, waxed frame, insulation layer, plus whatever else I forgot.

Great work. One thing though - how do you know how far to slide the vents open or closed? Is it just a matter of opening them in summer and closing in winter and half open in autumn/spring?
What dimensions was the wood used for the bars/half frames?
Is there a drawing for the two jar feeder you have built?
Love the design & I Just have question, where is the divider, so you can put a small colony into it & they don't have that huge barn to try to control humidity & temp ?
beautiful job Dillon, that design is so aesthetically pleasing and the functionality could be the future . Glad I stumbled on this. Does the angle on the frame encourage or insure the location of the comb? I want to build one after seeing yours!
Yes it does secure and encourage the comb to be attached to the frame and not the side of the hive like other top bar designs

Very nice workmanship, I had a question about the tunnel entrance, I've heard that the bees don't like that kind of entrance, what is your experience of that with your hives?
Nice video. Would be nice if you could get the sound up a bit. Sometimes can hardly hear you even with the sound all the way up (yep, some folk are hard of hearing :)
The barrel hive is better than the box hive, especially since the frames are easy to disassemble and the honey does not stick to them
I wonder how you would integrate the spacers put between the honeycomb bars.

Those are real nice i love cathedral hives. Thinking about a similar desine but at a 45 digree anglelike a tree trunk frames like a stair case top a quilt boxwirh sawdust front hinged to axes the frames

That's beautiful work and design. I'm concerned about the heat transfer from the copper after the sun warms it up. Isn't that going to increase the summertime heatload and cook the bees, larva and honey?
I would think keeping it clean and reflective would lower the temperature

I think that all hives should have a hexagonal shape. this is because bees recognize this geometric shape, and save your work! and they should follow the measure aurea 1.618, because they also recognize this measure! and hives would be more efficient and harmonized!

How many of those do you still have, 5 years later? These designer hives may look cool when they are new, just not very practical.
