    Back Yard Hive, You have produced a very good descriptive informative video that encompasses your coined phrase 'bee guardian'. Your approach to 'natural' beekeeping - let the bee's do their own thing with minimal disturbance. Bravo! Brava!

    What a beautiful produced video. The computer generated animation was very informative to see the overall picture of how a hive looks like. Thanks.

      Hi George, We are happy that the animation of inside the hive and how the bees organize the brood nest was helpful! Thank you for the kind words. Melissa@BackYardHive

    thank you so much for your kind words, the bees need everyone's help right now so this is the best way for us to get information out to people on how to care for bees in their backyard

    We need more "Bee Guardians." It's a true symbiotic relationship. We provide the bees with a first rate home and do our best to insure the health and survival of the hive, the bees provide pollination both domestic and wild plants. The gardener down the road may not know someone nearby is hiving bees, but the benefits will be there for that person.
    This is something I might do this spring.

    • @Elena15441
      @Elena15441 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first rate home for the bees will be a thick tall hollow tree and they'll be fine in it without having a "bee guardian". A bee hive is for people to not go out in the forest for a honey search. And about pollination: before Europeans came to N.America there were no honey bees there but all native plants did fine without them just using local pollinators. To be a successful beekeeper require knowledge and a hard work - just buying a beehive a placing it in the yard and forgetting about it will not work (most probably they'll swarm and fly away finding a better place for them to live).

    As a Bee Keeper for over 30 years, I strongly recommend a top bar Hive! If you have 2-3 mm slits at the bottom mites like Varoa and other parasites will fall out and if you have ants they will kill all the parasites that fall. Put your hive on shiny legs that insects cannot climb. I keep my bees in a hexagonal top bar hive that I designed my self. Will post videos up soon.

    This is an excellent DVD and companion to the book "Top Bar Beekeeping". The special hive tool that you see him using is also very useful as is some of their hive designs.

    Got my first top bar hive going and infact this my first time doing top bar hives and gotta say I like top bar hive more than Langstroth hive, easier to work with, much calmer natured bees and beautiful natural combs

    Drill a hole or holes in the top bars preferably the size of a bamboo Barbecue sqewer and push them to the bottom of the frame or where the frame will be and they will support the comb for inspection !!!!!

    What I find to be better with top bar vs. Langstroth is with my bad back, having a hive raised to my height is great. Also, instead of having to lift a box of honey that could weight up to 60lbs, you just remove a bar with honeycomb that can weight up to 7lbs. Top bars are less disturbing to the entire hive when removing just one or two bars, instead of pulling boxes off and disturbing the entire hive.

    Can a person purchase the hive box you have presented and use it not to collect honey, but just to promote bees? I would like to place one or two on my acreage to help the declining bee population but I have no intention of making a business out of honey- can this product be left to the bees?

    Maybe this was explained in the movie and I missed it? But, how is the Top bar hive better than standard hives most beekeepers use? I mean is it better for the Bee or the beekeeper and how so?

    • @SirTrollingham
      @SirTrollingham 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With top bars you just remove one bar at a time, with the rest of the bars still resting on the hive. This is less stressful for the bees, as most of the "roof" of their hive is still in place. Imagine how surprised you'd be if someone suddenly took the roof off of your house!

    • @Elena15441
      @Elena15441 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You just don't have to lift heavy boxes with this type of hive but the standard hive has it's own advantages (more honey productive, easier to find parts for it - standard boxes and frames, etc.) I wouldn't say that top bar is much better.

    • @goodcitizen3780
      @goodcitizen3780 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Elena15441 there is no langstroth that has More honey production than a top bar, warré or natural hive. That is langstroth misinformation. Production rests on many factors but what type of hive is not one of them. The thing about langstroth is that production is easier to gauge and harvest due mainly to the facts that in langstroth a body is constantly fiddling about in the hive and that harvesting equipment is standardized. Top bar is a "more natural" and less intensive method. Better still is the Warré which only need be attended twice a year. Once in warmer climes.

      Worse for the bees, better for the keeper who doesn't have to lift boxes. Most of these fail unless you live in a warm area. You can see and learn all you need to on TH-cam no need to buy a DVD anymore.
