Do you know why their rivers are dirty? Some months ago, I was walking to Sim Lim Tower and had to pass by the Jalan Besar Canal where the Johor-Singapore taxis wait. There were two taxi drivers sitting on the ground eating their meal of packet curry rice. After their meal, they promptly took the meal wrappers and plastic bags and tossed them into the river, rather than walking the 10 metres to the nearest rubbish bin. They did this completely naturally, like they have done it a thousand times before. ...it is only when they saw me, that they felt a little bit ashamed. This my friends, is why their rivers are dirty. Uselses to have Dutch NGOs when people's attitudes don't change first.
I agree..but to put on comparison..india, philippines and indonesia river is much worse..you can see the trash isn't that much and managable to be clean..
While it's true that litter like plastic bottles and food wrappers contribute to river pollution, the most significant culprit is often the illegal dumping of waste by nearby factories. Unlike visible floating debris, factory waste discharged into waterways is difficult to track and often undetectable. The devastating consequences, such as mass fish deaths, become apparent only after irreparable damage has been done.
Pointless if there's zero effort in enforcement and governance. The rivers in Selangor often gets chemically contaminated and the factories involved just gets a slap in the wrist fines.
All the enforcement and governance does not work if the mindset is still the same, saw someone throw out a plastic drink out of their vehicles recently, Mercedes some more
Well, at least a visible effort cleaning up the rivers. However, with 'Tak Apa' mentality of majority Malaysians, the rivers will get polluted again and again. Unless efforts like educating Malaysians across all ages and heavy laws + fines should be exercised as well.

Msia needs to have some structural framework reform on which agencies are responsible. Gov dept tend to kick ball around when it comes to their jobs. The scope of who shall do what is also blur so the agencies can play within the blurred lines and avoid responsibilities. This also create gaps for corrupt practices to fester within. Its not about technology because solution are aplenty. Example jkr will push to local council. Local council will push to jps and then vice versa, end of the day nothing gets done. I.e. @pan9765 yes, we need to understand the core of the problem, how did the river got so polluted in the first place. It is just as much the duty and responsibility of Malaysians to keep our country clean.

Firstly, the local government must ban industries along the riverside. Don't approve the renewal of their yearly business license until they relocate to more suitable industrial area. Currently, there's 25 industries that are operating along the riverside (according to FMT). Drainage from housing area that connects to the river must have rubbish trap nets at all connection points to the river.
