      unfortunately in SG, with aging population, our hospital bed crunch problem will just be getting more and more serious, beside lack of bed space, there is also a lack of nurses and health care attendants, so as much as possible, the hospital will want u to be discharged asap to free up available bed space.

My dad have to wait almost 48 hours for a hospital bed. But i can get a bed in less than half day if my period show up. But the specialist of other departments have to call my gyne or blood specialist to book the bed for me. Happen to me last year when i have uterus infection post surgery. The radiotherapy doctor cannot get me a bed for iv antibiotics so i told him to call my gyne and he was shocked too.
      My own grandmother stay in hospital for more than 4 months during covid (bed is so limited) because she is in her 80s and living alone and will go to her hwaker stall to work when discharged. They know she refuse to go hospice and is dangerous to be discharged so they allow her to stay.

    Simple solution (1 way)
    1. Elder people can rent out their flat.
    Rent out to foreign workers with ‘s’ pass at a low rate. Their pay is usually low and will be glad to stay at where they can afford.
    It’s a win/win situation.
    They help to pay for your water/electricity bills.
    2. I rent out mine and I am 76+ yrs now. Tenants now are like my children. They ‘take care’ of me and I take care of them like my children.
    3. Their rooms/my room are not lock.
    When they go to work I tidy up their rooms & do gardening 🪴 & house cleaning.
    When they come home they cook and we eat with together.
    They help to clean the house on their off days.
    They are happy, I am happy. 🙏
    …and stay healthy.

    Suggestions: A typical strategic way to monitor the lonely death may be to come up with a monitoring and signal alert system. This can be integrated to the relevant authority should there a need to install a home surveillance system, or/and with an emergency button(similar to hospital ward) beside the bed to sound any emergency alarm direct to the social welfare department and the hospital(a hot line link). Perhaps these requirement will all depends on the personal situation, movement or having critical condition of the lonely tenant. Thank you(from Brunei).

    The elderly Muslim lady passing away at home is really tragic. I think people didn't notice her death because those who knew her thought someone would find out if she died. She actively befriended one of her neighbour's daughter, participated in social events in the community, and her son even checked in on her weekly. But she slipped through the gaps precisely because she had such a strong safety net. We tend to keep to ourselves so sometimes maybe people don't like to be 'kay poh' or overreacting when no one replies. I just feel so much for her son and her daughter-in-law, they need therapy to grieve over such a traumatic experience.
    Kudos to the trauma cleaners for their hard work! It definitely isn't an easy job but a necessary one.

      My neighbour pass away at home alone about a year ago. His elder son kick his 2nd son and he moved out and only visit him outside the house. There are food delivery to my neighbour twice a day but no one find out he died. It's after the 2nd day the social worker notice the untouched food then call the police. Police even ask us before they break into the house. My mum said we just saw him chatting at void deck a few days ago. My malay neighbour said she got uneasy feeling when she didn't see the old man water his plant in the morning but didn't dare to bother or be kaypo.
      None of us even notice the food are untouched as we never open the plastic bag. Usually he will put the eaten food in plastic at corridor for the delivery person or cleaners to throw away.

    • @KanojoRinko
      @KanojoRinko 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@gbear8207 The son stated that he got busy with work, so it's understandable that sometimes he failed to check on her weekly. Plus, he assumed that if she did not pick up the phone when he called, she would be at JB since that's a habit he knows that she has. Even the neighbour thought she went to JB because she was healthy enough to go to JB by herself. Each part of her social net thought she was accounted for, and they don't check in on her everyday. After all, you can visit on a Saturday and the elderly might pass on a Sunday due to some freak accident. This is completely out of their control. That's why she slipped through the cracks. In another part of the documentary, there was a niece who failed to check in on her uncle due to life events. By the time the neighbour alert her that something was amiss, she missed catching her uncle alive by 3 days. She had to mourn her husband's passing a few months before and now has to live with a traumatic experience of finding her uncle's corpse. We are only human...

    • @KanojoRinko
      @KanojoRinko 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@celestialstar124 Yeah, sometimes we tend to not check in because there's a habit by the elderly where it can explain why no one noticed something was amiss. There was a period of time where my elderly neighbour, who stays alone, did not check in with my mom for a while. It scared us. Later, the neighbour returned to tell us that she had been hospitalised for surgery. She did engage some home nurse service but decided not to, preferring her own freedom and doing things her own way. We need to respect the elderly's decision to live on their own but yet sometimes, they themselves may not be receptive. Nowadays, people tend to close their doors, so it's even harder to encounter your neighbours...

    Maybe those living alone should make it a point to befriend the neighbours, and the neighbours should make a point to check up on the elderly living alone to avoid elderly dying and decomposing for days in the apt.
    The government or local GRC minister should do something about building community or neighbourly care and concern to avoid this.
    Alternatively, those elderly with wealth, can choose to go to a good nursing home or co living with another elderly (share cost for living and companionship) .

    There are duress or emergency buttons are often provided for elderly or sick people, they can be worn on a necklace or just kept handy in the house. The button is pressed once a day (or if there is some kind of emergency) to indicate the system is functional, and the person is awake and active on that day. If it is not pressed, I assume later in the day the system operators call the phone number or with some systems use an in-house speaker. If no answer a person will be sent round to the house, and it goes from there. A place like Singapore could have a system like this organised in a pinch.

    Lonely deaths are very common in Japan and South Korea since the last 2 decades. In fact, the term "lonely deaths" is a literal translation of the Japanese term for it, "kodokushi" . I guess it is inevitable that this will happen in all developed countries as families become smaller and more dispersed. In Japan and South Korea, a good proportion are younger people who suffered social isolation, instead of simply growing old alone.

    In Singapore, the Advanced Medical Directive allows individuals to register their wish to reject extraordinary life-sustaining measures when terminally ill. This ensures that their preferences are respected even if they are unable to communicate their wishes at that time. Euthanasia refers to intentionally ending a person's life to relieve suffering. It is illegal in Singapore. Assisted suicide involves providing the means for a person to end their own life. It is also illegal in Singapore. Palliative Care: Singapore emphasizes palliative care to improve the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses. Palliative care focuses on pain management, symptom relief, and emotional support. Hospice Care: Hospice care provides comfort and support for terminally ill patients and their families. Dying alone is not scary. Living without any love ones that you know are there for you is what scares me.

      That's the point though, isn't it? That the obvious end of a lonely life is a lonely death? To die alone, knowing that you are alone and unnoticed is an unimaginable fate. And so much more likely to happen to people who have led lonely lives. If you have people in your life you are in contact with you can tell if you don't feel well, you would hope they would visit you and look after you or get you in to hospital.
