I bought Under the Pink on a whim one winter evening back in 1994. I was 20 and heavily into metal and grunge at the time (still am), but I'd heard a snippet of one of her earlier songs at some point earlier - probably Crucify - and something about it stuck with me.
I was meant to be at a bar later that night, so I thought I'd listen to the first track just to clear my head and then head out. I was alone and it was dark outside. Drink in hand, I sat back in a couch, and turned the record on.
When the last song ended, my drink was untouched and I hadn't moved from my spot. I had barely moved at all. I had never heard anything like it. I was genuinely mesmerised, even a bit stunned. And thoroughly hooked.
Late as hell, I dragged myself off to the bar where I met up with a large group of close friends, one of whom was studying to be a sound engineer. He asked why I was so damned late. I said that I'd been held captive by a record that'd I just got. He laughed and asked what band it was.
    "Tori Amos," I said.
My friend instantly grew serious. "Oh man," he said. "I know what you mean. I listen to a lot of music, but...she's something else."
    He wasn't wrong.

    I cannot explain why.
Tori wrote this song after receiving a fan letter from a man named Greg.

takes me back to college and what it was like to be young and hopeful ... didn't have a plan, but wasn't weighted by it - that sort of freedom only comes so often in life and for many it never does. I hate that depression takes a hold of people and there's not much we can do to help them fight other than showing them all the good and wonderful things there are and hope it's enough.

The only way I ever had seen a Tori Amos video was through MuchMusic. It was cable add-on, I believe it was Canadian, or UK owned.
Anyway, that's where I first saw her Spark video in 1996.
Followed by Crucify at some point.
Most of the music on that channel was purely dedicated to Alternative artists.
MTV still played a fair range of music videos, but they started dwindling towards 1997.

Why does this so perfectly represent the 90's? There was so much sadness and angst and self reflection in the 90's - it was so self deprecating . Heroin chic Nirvana and gothic flair. I think it is something to do with a reaction to - anger at and disgust with - the shallowness and mindless self indulgence of the 70's and 80's. I think also it has to do with the people growing up in broken families due to the divorce boom. Tori translated this feeling perfectly...part anger part sadness part confusion and all raw.

    • @uhuhyup5328
      @uhuhyup5328 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

That my friend is a spot on insight. I tend to think too it's a backlash against the frivolity and excesses of the 80s (a decade i also love as well as the 90s). I tend to believe that the 90s is a revival of the 70s in many ways (organic, reflective if a bit self absorbed). But love the 90s and love this music. Thanks for your insight. Brightened up my day. Cheers to you and yours!

    • @happy_camper
      @happy_camper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

There was definitely confusion in those days. And pent up emotion. Frustration even. Growing up at that time, it felt like we had no idea where we were headed. Directionless, and questioning the societally traditional path to “happiness” in life. The decade ended on an optimistic note for me, but the years prior were spent wandering and wondering. It honestly felt like our generation needed a few extra years to discover ourselves and mature, when compared to previous generations.

I've spent the last few weeks going back through Tori's early music. I knew that there was a song that resonated deeply with me and would help me grasp how I've been feeling for such a long time. 2020 has weirdly been a "pretty good year" and a very formative one. Spent alot of time in solitude, tracing back those formative years and maybe... finally... At 45 I feel I have a purpose I'm not lost and have all the jigsaw peices in their place. I'm not a perfect man (who is?) quite flawed really! But I now know I can be my best and it's actually good enough for me!

Tears on the sleeve of a man
Don't want to be a boy today
    Heard the eternal footman
Bought himself a bike to race
And Greg he writes letters and burns his CDs
They say you were something in those formative years
Hold onto nothing as fast as you can
    Well still pretty good year
    Maybe a bright sandy beach
    Is gonna bring you back
Maybe not so now you're off
    You're gonna see America
Well let me tell you something about America
    Pretty good year
    Some things are melting now
Well what's it gonna take till my baby's alright
And Greg he writes letters with his birthday pen
Sometimes he's aware that they're drawing him in
Lucy was pretty your best friend agreed

She is an actual artist and nowadays that is so hard to find someone that speaks actually for the masses and not just for themselves and for their own monetary gain it's incredible how lucky we were as teens etc... and how sorry I feel for the future and not that I'm saying all nowadays artists are irrelevant just that I wish that they could feel what she helped us feel and deal with what we needed when we needed it most and I hope to God that the younger generation has an artist that does the same for them at some point.

I know exactly how you feel. Tori’s music helped me get through some really hard bits of my life. She helped me understand myself better, helped me let go of the abusive religion I was born into, helped me deal with the abuse I suffered in childhood and as a teen, helped me to leave an abusive relationship. She helped me have the strength to stand up for myself and believe I deserved to be loved and, more importantly, to love myself. She’s definitely the voice of a generation of girls and women, and I’m sure more than a few men. She’s one of a kind and I’m so happy and grateful I got to experience her music and viewpoint for almost the past 30 year and, hopefully, another 30.
There are a few artists I feel the newer generations are appreciating the same way we are. Billy Eilish is one who seems to have that level of introspection, a bit less catering to the record companies and a bit more true to herself and her experiences. In my opinion, anyway. Also Hozier, his music is incredible.

It’s finally back to 1996 on Mackinac Island in Michigan. Working as a Night Auditor at the Murray Hotel. My 18yo self was so confused as to why he had to leave home because he was already hooked on cocaine and alcohol before graduation, because when he did those he could love his girlfriend. But my parents found out about my true live, Scott (he was my first love from 8th - 11th grade) so I ended up on this beautiful/magical island for the summer. Rachel Rosemary true! So did Trent Reznor, big influences on each other. I consider her as rock and roll as anybody! Maybe not as heavy, but the spirit is there (and sometimes just as heavy, on tracks like Professional Widow). Love her!

Whenever I play this song, it instantly puts me exactly right back to where I was so many many moons ago. It’s incredible, how much I’m still precisely the same girl, yet somehow through the dark curtains of pain and suffering and just generally living, I’m also someone else now. And yet even still, some things are melting now…….if anyone only knew how much I long to just only be that same girl once again, the oblivious one, the blissfully ignorant one that I used to be. Nothing I tell you, nothing is as one would perceive it to be, back then, I honestly thought the world was perfect. It’s only after living, that one comes to realize just exactly who the wizard behind the curtain is. 🌚🌚🌚

TORI AMOS - UNDER THE PINK
Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos; August 22, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She is a classically trained musician with a mezzo-soprano vocal range. Having already begun composing instrumental pieces on piano, Amos won a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University at the age of five, the youngest person ever to have been admitted. She had to leave at the age of eleven when her scholarship was discontinued for what Rolling Stone described as "musical insubordination". Amos was the lead singer of the short-lived 1980s pop group Y Kant Tori Read before achieving her breakthrough as a solo artist in the early 1990s. Her songs focus on a broad range of topics, including sexuality, feminism, politics, and religion. Her charting singles include "Crucify", "Silent All These Years", "God", "Cornflake Girl", "Caught a Lite Sneeze", "Professional Widow", "Spark", "1000 Oceans", "Flavor" and "A Sorta Fairytale", her most commercially successful single in the U.S. to date. Amos has received five MTV VMA nominations and eight Grammy Award nominations, and won an Echo Klassik award for her Night of Hunters classical crossover album. She is listed on VH1's 1999 "100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll" at number 71. ❤️💯‼️
And I have the great honor of having in my discography two CD-albums by this talented artist, LITTLE EARTHQUAKES (1992) and UNDER THE PINK (1994). ❤️💯‼️
Under the Pink is the second studio album by singer-songwriter Tori Amos. Upon its release in January 1994, the album debuted atop the UK Albums Chart on the back of the hit single "Cornflake Girl", and peaked at number 12 in the US. The album was certified double Platinum in the US by the RIAA in October 1999, for sales exceeding 2 million copies. It was the 61st highest-selling album of 1994 in the UK and was certified platinum by the BPI in February 2007, for sales exceeding 300,000 copies. Under the Pink was included in Blender magazine's list of 500 CDs You Must Own, and was voted among the greatest albums of the 1990s by Rolling Stone magazine some years later. A special double-disc tour edition was released exclusively in Australia and New Zealand in November 1994, titled More Pink: The B-Sides. ❤️💯‼️

      "Pretty Good Year"
      Released: March 7, 1994 (UK)
      [Verse 1]
Tears on the sleeve of a man
Don't want to be a boy today
      I heard the eternal footman
Bought himself a bike to race
      [Pre-Chorus]
And Greg he writes letters and burns his CDs
They say you were something in those formative years
Hold onto nothing as fast as you can
      [Chorus]
      Well, still, pretty good year
      Pretty good
      [Verse 2]
      Maybe a bright sandy beach
Is gonna bring you back, back, back
Maybe not, so now you're off
      You're gonna see America
Well let me tell you something about America
      [Chorus]
      Pretty good year
      A-ha, pretty good
      [Bridge]
      Some things are melting now
      Some things are melting now
Well, hey, what's it gonna take
      Till my baby's alright?
      What's it gonna take
      Till my baby's alright?
      [Pre-Chorus]
Greg, he writes letters with his birthday pen
Sometimes he's aware that they're drawing him in
Lucy was pretty, your best friend agreed
      [Chorus]
      Well, still, pretty good year
      A-ha, pretty good
      A-ha, pretty good year
Produced by Tori Amos & Eric Rosse
