TORI AMOS - UNDER THE PINK Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos; August 22, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She is a classically trained musician with a mezzo-soprano vocal range. Having already begun composing instrumental pieces on piano, Amos won a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University at the age of five, the youngest person ever to have been admitted. She had to leave at the age of eleven when her scholarship was discontinued for what Rolling Stone described as "musical insubordination". Amos was the lead singer of the short-lived 1980s pop group Y Kant Tori Read before achieving her breakthrough as a solo artist in the early 1990s. Her songs focus on a broad range of topics, including sexuality, feminism, politics, and religion. Her charting singles include "Crucify", "Silent All These Years", "God", "Cornflake Girl", "Caught a Lite Sneeze", "Professional Widow", "Spark", "1000 Oceans", "Flavor" and "A Sorta Fairytale", her most commercially successful single in the U.S. to date. Amos has received five MTV VMA nominations and eight Grammy Award nominations, and won an Echo Klassik award for her Night of Hunters classical crossover album. She is listed on VH1's 1999 "100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll" at number 71. ❤️💯‼️ And I have the great honor of having in my discography two CD-albums by this talented artist, LITTLE EARTHQUAKES (1992) and UNDER THE PINK (1994). ❤️💯‼️ Under the Pink is the second studio album by singer-songwriter Tori Amos. Upon its release in January 1994, the album debuted atop the UK Albums Chart on the back of the hit single "Cornflake Girl", and peaked at number 12 in the US. The album was certified double Platinum in the US by the RIAA in October 1999, for sales exceeding 2 million copies. It was the 61st highest-selling album of 1994 in the UK and was certified platinum by the BPI in February 2007, for sales exceeding 300,000 copies. Under the Pink was included in Blender magazine's list of 500 CDs You Must Own, and was voted among the greatest albums of the 1990s by Rolling Stone magazine some years later. A special double-disc tour edition was released exclusively in Australia and New Zealand in November 1994, titled More Pink: The B-Sides. ❤️💯‼️

@@chrisv.h.2307 This is probably closest to what I thought initially. This doesn't strike me a merely a Bible parable, there's a darkness to this. A lot of Tori's earlier work had themes of sexual indignation
@@seanjenkins331 Yes! I interpret the first verse as the assailant's perspective: "I don't believe I went too far/I said I was willing/She said she knew what my books did not/I thought she knew what's up." The refrain is revisiting the scene of the crime, and of the woman's pain. The second verse is her coping with the aftermath and the community reactions: "She said they all think they know him well/She knew him better." Then the verse switches to a sort of revenge fantasy: "Hey they found a body/not sure it was his but they're using his name/And she gave him shelter/and somewhere I know she knows/some things only she knows." It's still a bit opaque, but the video also reminds me of the Take Back the Night marches, where women march to reclaim spaces where they feel unsafe, and where men are asked to bear witness to the pain of sexual assault. She's such a powerful songwriter.
Чтобы понимать музыку Тори ( на мой взгляд только одному из 20ти нравится) нужно мозги повернуть радикально в сторону, в этом прелесть этой уникальной женщины.

Well, you would have to know the historical references. Same for Juarez and the dumping of bodies in the desert. I told her about it once and apparently she looked it up.
Just watched a bunch of Tori vids in a row and not once did I feel like I was being sold sexuality at any point in her career. How refreshing. Just good music created by an interesting, talented woman.
I disagree, Tori used her sexuality at many points in her career. And power to her too, she is a strong, independent and sensuous woman and has every right to use all her talents.
Meh.. I wouldnt say she's never used her sexuality, there's literally a picture of her breast feeding a pig on the internet ffs. and that's great. I've never had a problem with woman using their "sexuality" for whatever reason. Good on them. Men do that shit all the time and get away with it.
She had her feminine sexuality not made for the Male gaze! Mainstream media demands women do this to "make it". I'm sure she fought a lot behind the scenes.
The nursing a pig on that album cover of Boys for Pele was about nourishing the unclean, there was alot on that album about religion. It had absolutely nothing to do with sexuality any more than nursing a baby does. She was muddy and carrying a shotgun sitting in rocking chair nursing a piglet.. It was never meant to be sexual. If she had been 60 or weighed 300 lbs, possibly even if she were male- ie if she had a body that didnt happen to attract the male gaze in our culture instead of happening to have one that did-- she wouldve wanted to do it the same. I wouldnt say she USED sexuality in her early career (at least not up thru Choirgirl or To Venus) so much as she simply HAD sexuality as a part of her that was sometimes visible. Her sexuality never seemed really a performance for men in any way. Everyone HAS sexuality, but she wasnt selling sexuality that wasnt actually her own as many female artists do or must. Her sexuality was real, and all hers, and because it just happened to be a part of her, of course youre gonna see it sometimes but it wasnt FOR someone else. Like making love to the piano, im sure she did it alone when she played certain songs, or a certain way. The audience just happens to be there and maybe she is even aware of that (because its hard to not be) and plays with it a lil but she was very authentic and her sexuality seemed authentic too, in way most performers , especially young women performing ....it just doesnt. She isnt the only one like this, but it is not the norm. That said its also easy to take your sexuality for granted as a young attractive woman. Now that she is older I think she is much more eager to be seen as sexual and maybe act out sexuality larger than just whats hers. A while back (a few yrs?) she said she hopes ppl see her as a MILF or something like that. Which makes sense for how performing women are seen and treated thru stages of their life in our media culture. When you are fetishized, you dont want to be seen as the gaze's object of sexual desire, because it obliterates your individuality, and everything else you are. But when you are seen as nonsexual and, undesirable, etc. Believe me, you wish someone would just stop and see you as hot.
I never solicit requests but once in Portland she asked me. This was the song I chose. She asked why and I was vague but lets just say I know a female that had this journey, sadly more than one.

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos; August 22, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. ❤️💯‼️
And I have the great honor of having in my discography two CD-albums by this talented artist, LITTLE EARTHQUAKES (1992) and UNDER THE PINK (1994). ❤️💯‼️
Under the Pink is the second studio album by singer-songwriter Tori Amos. ❤️💯‼️
"Past the Mission"
Released: May 16, 1994 (UK)
[Verse 1]
I don’t believe I went too far
I said I was willing, willing, willing
She said she knew what my books did not
I thought she knew what’s up
[Chorus]
Past the mission, behind the prison tower
Past the mission, I once knew a hot girl
Past the mission, they’re closing every hour
Past the mission, I smell the roses
[Verse 2]
She said they all think they know him well
She knew him better, better, better
Everyone wanted something from him
I did too, but I shut my mouth
He just gave me a smile
[Chorus]
Past the mission, behind the prison tower
Past the mission, I once knew a hot girl
Past the mission, they’re closing every hour
Past the mission, I smell the roses
Past the mission, I smell the roses
[Bridge]
Hey, they found a body
Not sure it was his, still they’re using his name
And she gave him shelter
And somewhere I know she knows
Somewhere I know she knows
Somethings only she knows
[Chorus]
Past the mission, behind the prison tower
Past the mission, I once knew a hot girl
Past the mission, they’re closing every hour
Past the mission, I smell the roses
Past the mission behind the prison tower
Past the mission, I once knew a hot girl
Past the mission, they’re closing every hour
Past the mission, I smell the roses
Past the mission, I smell the roses
Past the mission, I smell the roses

LOVE LOVE LOVE
Beautiful song.
I've been obsessed with this song for most of my life and I still have no idea what it's really about

Isn't it about a priest committing sexual assault, and then the revenge fantasy implied from the bridge on?
@@chrisv.h.2307 This is probably closest to what I thought initially. This doesn't strike me a merely a Bible parable, there's a darkness to this. A lot of Tori's earlier work had themes of sexual indignation
@@seanjenkins331 Yes! I interpret the first verse as the assailant's perspective: "I don't believe I went too far/I said I was willing/She said she knew what my books did not/I thought she knew what's up." The refrain is revisiting the scene of the crime, and of the woman's pain. The second verse is her coping with the aftermath and the community reactions: "She said they all think they know him well/She knew him better." Then the verse switches to a sort of revenge fantasy: "Hey they found a body/not sure it was his but they're using his name/And she gave him shelter/and somewhere I know she knows/some things only she knows."
It's still a bit opaque, but the video also reminds me of the Take Back the Night marches, where women march to reclaim spaces where they feel unsafe, and where men are asked to bear witness to the pain of sexual assault.
She's such a powerful songwriter.
spectacular
wunderschön
I'm obsessed with this song all the sudden...
Not sure them but the US has a cult in 2024
Чтобы понимать музыку Тори ( на мой взгляд только одному из 20ти нравится) нужно мозги повернуть радикально в сторону, в этом прелесть этой уникальной женщины.
Tori Amos didn't even need Trent Reznor to sing on this track to be amazing. One of my favorites.
And that voice backing her vocals...given their situation is almost like an apology.
@@pleasant_screams903 what was the situation? i’ve never heard this song before or know any context
Used to listen to cassette tape of this on commuter train to Euston London BR via South Hampstead as a Jewish Christian writer Oliver Symons gave me as a gift the song.Original Bridge mid 8 it got me through winter of 96 I think.God bless gospel girl Tori
This idea of female power by surrendering is quite intriguing...still after so many years
love her voice pass the mission and I smell the roses amazing
I always found these lyrics to be vague and confusing. I'm so glad the video cleared it up.
Well, you would have to know the historical references. Same for Juarez and the dumping of bodies in the desert. I told her about it once and apparently she looked it up.
@@toriless What historical references? What bodies by Juarez?
I saw her live a few times in person, and on TV. At times she treats that piano bench like a lover, and there is NO denying it.
CLASSIC
4:03 her smile at the end of the video!
Linda música! Eu amo Tori!
I love how NIN's Starfuckers came from Tori's Professional Widow

I Looooooovvve this one !!!
Tori Amos Past The Mission is one of my personal favorite song
I never solicit requests but once in Portland she asked me. This was the song I chose. She asked why and I was vague but lets just say I know a female that had this journey, sadly more than one.
Those townsfolk will never forget that day. Getting them to lie in the road for one. One of my Top 3 fave Tori songs.
Id always listen to this song after getting something done.. Or at least trying to get something done..
Happy Easter. Some things never change.
back again... the healing she does...
i love this
So good.
I almost stopped lisrening to Tori's music in the 90's because I had such an insane crusch on her.
it wasn't healthy. i still love her but i have it under control
That is what masturbation is for, it will fade, eventually. I have had to many crushes to track. Heck, look at my 'nym and the first 4 letters.
rumor (and evidence) suggests trent reznor's vocal samples may have been done during the thanksgiving of 1993 when tori tried (and failed) to cook a turkey while reznor was staying at the famous tate house. i only raise this to point out timeline regarding NIN downward spiral in other threads. thanks!
Iconic.
I just wait for the chorus
What's the box at 2:10?
Found!
Trent Reznor on backing vocals
I love this video!
This is one of my top ten favorite songs of my life. And my favorite video or in the top two. It rivals Lana Del Rey's Paradise but pre-dates it so may be Lana's inspiration.
Correction: Tropico is the Lana del Rey musical short film. Paradise is the album and will confuse non-fans. My bad.
This song.
So fucking good.
Couldn't have said it any better
2019 🖤
Still blooudy awesome afer all the years. Remembered the song in a supermarket today and it reminded me of Afghani prisons.
This prison is the church.

Very intense clip
She was so beautiful back then.😢
Because you two commenting these things is gonna make her look like she did here, right?

TORI AMOS .. Where The Hell Are You? WHEREVER YOU ARE I HOPE YOU ARE ALIVE AND HAPPY BECAUSE I AM HAPPY JUST LISTENING TO YOUR WONDERFUL MUSIC ! ! ! YOU ARE GOD SENT
She release an album and toured in 2023 and may tour as soon a 2025 after her album is done.
Wow, I've never contemplated the real meaning of this song till seeing this video. Is this about assault victims rising up after their surrender to the evil men? That's what I get anyway, based on what I already know about her experience and other songs about it.
