Rogan, missed it in the podcast when Nims was talking about anapurna. Nims said when he climbed anapurna 3 out of 4 died trying to climb Anapurna. Joe corrected him via Jamie pulling up Google where it says only 32%. Nims said he changed that statistic because 60 people summited since he set the lines in 2019. He didn't catch it that Nims actually made it safer to climb, and Nims just moved on. Wish that would be corrected.

If 50 people climbed up and lived because of him, that means 62/150 died before him, so 41% died before he went up. Then, carrying the survivor, descended back to an elevation which helicopters could then reach, so the climber could be airlifted out. Oh, an he did this ALL WITHOUT BOTTLLED OXYGEN!

Nirmal Purja is an inspiration just for being a Gurkha to begin with. In 2018 72 of the top 100 ranked shooters in the British army were from the Gurkha Brigade including the winner. It is just one of many examples of why being a Gurkha is badass. Despite their fearsomeness in battle, most Gurkhas are traditionally very family orientated and will just serve until they retire with a pension. Nirmal joining the SBS, getting invited to join the SAS, and all the crazy death zone mountaineering and record breaking he has been doing, is just a Gurkha from humble beginnings realizing his true potential in the world. He continues to inspire many to realize their true potential as well.

    Fair go Joe.
Nims vastly improved those success stats by setting lines for the flood of other climbers that followed him.
Blew out the success averages on that peak. So post Nims everyone had an assist. Hardly fair.

No, the reason people take umbrage to this in the comments is because Joe didn't listen to what Nims said, and then Joe doubled down when Jamie pulled up the (new) stat - the more so because Joe was almost dismissive about the perceived incongruity of the stat. I'm glad Nims was dismissive of him by saying "Okay, you know what Joe I'm not going to argue with you" and then later on says "Google it" when the question came regarding the conversion between Celcius and Fahrenheit.

  • @ericclaptonsrobotpilot7276

I think it’s important to note that when death statistics for 8000m peaks are talked about it refers to the ratio of people that either successfully summited and died on decent or people that died during their attempt compared to successful summits total. Attempts that failed but safely made it down are not accounted for in these statistics. If 33% of ALL people that attempted Annapurna died then we would be looking at an insane amount of deaths because thousands have attempted over the years so there would be several hundred bodies on the mountain in that case.
Usually this is described more clearly, as in 1 out of every 4 (~25%) people that summit K2 die.
Joe did not do a very good job overall on this episode. I think there was a lot of cultural clashing going on over the 2 hours. Many times Joe just flat out disregarded things Nims said or opinions he had about things Joe knows very little about and outlooks on life that differ from Joe’s own viewpoint. I do think there has to have been a few times when Nims misspoke or didn’t clearly explain things due to cultural/language differences or the difficulty in explaining climbing and mountaineering to non-alpinists. Several times Joe said things that indicated he either didn’t watch the Documentary or barely paid attention while watching. If he had read Nims’ book/audiobook he would have done a better job on this interview.

I want to say that when Nims and Joe discuss deaths on the Annapurna ascent, I don't think Joe got that Nims is saying that the stats have changed BECAUSE/SINCE he and his team set the lines and therefore made the climb safer for all who climb after him. I would love to know if he is right about the stats before versus after. At any rate, he is a hella hero.

Not sure why people are criticizing Joe Rogan for grilling Nims. But the fact of the matter is, Nims is definitely hiding some things here like who financed him, what his motivation was for this feat, how much money he earned from it etc. One does not have to look further than his personal brand that he created soon after climbing Mount K2. Now he is all over media and netflix. So there is a definitely a team behind Nims that is promoting him for financial reasons.
