I’m not trying to be rude but I have looked at reviews since Simon has stopped doing this channel and best since he’s been gone this channel has gotten half the amount of use at the very best even with some pretty famous people to do episodes about. Just saying maybe Simon could step in and do one from time to time especially someone as famous as Henry the eighth it kind of would’ve been nice to see Simon do this one.
As an outsider looking in I am surprised that Henry VII does not garner the same level of attention as his son and granddaughters. After all he not only founded the Tudor dynasty but his reign was the one that ultimately brought an end to the Wars of the Roses. Furthermore he seemed to be a good Steward of the realm which laid the groundwork for England’s rise over the next couple centuries. Lastly he is the only Tudor Monarch that the modern royal family can claim direct descent from.

Fun fact! When Henry VIII was still with the catholic church, he wrote a book on how amazing the Pope was and how he was the best thing since sliced bread. The Pope was honored by this, and gave Henry the title: "Defender of the Faith." Later he broke away from the catholic church, but kept the title "Defender of the Faith." And all Kings and Queens of Britain kept it too. Today, the current king of Britain: Charles III still has the title Defender of the Faith!!
I feel sorry for Katherine Howard. She's been demonized by history, but reevaluations of her life indicate she may have been groomed from an early age and even assaulted. So sad what she had to go through.
Leaving the bottom button of one's waistcoat unbuttoned became a thing thanks to King Edward VII; he did it for comfort because he was recovering from an operation for appendicitis.
@@sendieloo Sam Neill stole the show in season 1 And I love how at no point in the series do they make you sympathetic to Henry...hes truly was a monster
@@joecool9739 yes, I love Sam Neill! I kind of did become partially sympathetic to Henry, albeit only slightly. His father, King Henry VII won the kingdom after a long war. If he wanted a successful hold onto the throne he needed an heir and probably a few spares. He wanted male heirs. Everything he did to manipulate the Catholic Church, eventually breaking with it and creating his own Church was to be able to leave Catherine, who he believed was not going to give him a son. Anne gave him a daughter and he was only getting older and more desperate. After his head injury I believe that changed his personality forever and made him become more and more paranoid. He eventually changed the law of succession allowing his daughters to reign after Edward. I don’t agree with his actions but I understand why it was so important to him.
Henry VIII's place in history is kind of mixed. On the one hand, he helped laid the foundations that established England (and later Great Britain) as an empire. However, he had a repulsive personality. Also, at this point, Mr. Smallwood needs to be the official host now. He's been doing this job long enough.
I like that you did not depict his 2nd wife as a temptress. Many historians do. If she gave herself easily as a mistress, she's would've been "damaged goods," but if she didn't she was a "temptress?" It's the age old issue many women face for a multitude of situations, damned if you do and damned if you don't. I would like to believe that she just didn't want to be his side piece so that she and her offspring would be discarded and destitute when Henry got bored. I will disagree with the last part of the video. Its not because he wanted to get laid. Clearly, that was not an issue. He just really wanted multiple heirs and didn't like being told no.
It also overlooks that his third wife did the exact same thing, and had more grounds to do it. But because Anne got executed for alleged adultery and Jane was the so-called “favorite” who died bearing the longed-for heir and ended up being the wife Henry chose to be buried with (not like he had that many attractive options at the time, given the only other wife he acknowledged outlived him), Jane got deified. I’d argue Jane was worse in a way, since she was actively coached to replace Anne by her ambitious brother, while in Anne’s early days, the precedent for a King setting aside his Queen was mostly unheard of, especially for some random courtier.
