Type 1 Diabetes: Warning Signs

This is a message from Cedar Crest College's School of Nursing to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and prevent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening complication of the auto-immune system.
Aubrey Gulla was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 14 months old. Her parents, Nathan and Sharon Gulla believed she was battling a cold for a number of weeks but became concerned when she did not recover as expected.
Aubrey had been showing signs of Type 1 Diabetes but since neither Nathan nor Sharon were aware of what these symptoms were, they were overlooked by them as well as a variety of healthcare professionals. It was not until they brought her into the emergency room that they decided to test her blood sugar as protocol. The ER nurse was convinced it was not T1D but came back with a blood sugar of 426. Shortly after the doctor confirmed that Aubrey had T1D and was flown to CHOP. Nathan and Sharon were then faced with significant lifestyle changes in order to manage their daughter’s disease.
This PSA will highlight the events leading up to Aubrey’s diagnosis and help define the warning signs of Type 1 Diabetes.
