Strain VS Support | K-Pop Female Vocalists (A4 - F5)

  • Note by note comparison of strained/unsupported singing VS. supported/resonant singing from female Korean vocalists
    STRAIN: A lack of proper support, accompanied by the singer forcing out the note by squeezing the throat muscles together and raising the larynx, and potentially having tension in the jaw, neck, tounge, etc. Creates a closed, sometimes yelled sound and is unhealthy for the vocal chords.
    SUPPORT: Using proper breathing techniques to ''support'' the voice, achieved by using the diaphragm to control the airflow against relaxed, connected vocal chords, unobstructed by tension. Creates a healthy, open sound.
    It's worth noting that even if a singer has developed proper support, they'll still start straining at some point, depending on how developed their technique is. Likewise, a singer appearing in the ''strain'' category does not mean they necessarily strain throughout their whole range. Most singers have a ''supported range'', in which they're able to properly support their voice, and when singing outside of that range, they'd strain/be unsupported. More info and examples on that can be found in this video: • Strain VS Support 2 | ...

    someone once told me if you strain it'll sound like the highest note you can reach but if you support it'll sound like you still have room to go up even if you don't. you can really tell that difference here. i also notice the straining notes tend to sound a little more closed off, like their throat is sealed shut.

I have a limited range with support so idk how to go over this hump :( I just sing recreationally and for some extra cash on the side to help my family out, so I don't have access to a vocal trainer. Do you know anything about solving this issue?

      It's basically Stability (Support) vs Mobility (Strain). Singers strains to reach a note outside their range. Or also because they are not using proper breathing technique.

    As someone with very little understanding of singing technique, I find it fascinating that you can see how different their faces look when straining vs supporting. In the "support" clips, it almost looks like they're just opening their mouths and releasing the sound into the world rather than making it happen. In the "strain" clips, it looks like there are muscles in the face and neck being tightly controlled to push the sound into shape. So interesting.

    • @HBickford96
      @HBickford96 7 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      katie kawaii Because that almost is what they're doing. With proper support, notes are much easier to hit and let soar while strained singing taxes the muscles in your face and especially your neck which is quite dangerous in the long run.

      @@thunderstorm__8147 exactly. So many people try to couple support as being a sound free from tension with diaphragm support. All support is is engagement of the diaphragm while singing. Plenty of the examples in the strain catagory can be using their diaphragm, but also pushing or forcing their sound. Healthy vocalizing can occur even without using alot of your support. Often times, a healthier sound comes from less trying

    Here you can really see SM's great quality training impact by how every SM artist that was shown is in the "Support" category.
    Many people easily discredit SM for only prioritizing visual appearances and/or dancing talent but it's always been clear that the company puts so much more effort into training their artists to vocalize with proper technique so they sing with more quality and professionally.

    To strain is to force the note to come out- it comes from the throat, and is damaging to the vocal cords. There is no real air in it.
    To support is to sing from the gut, meaning that you're using your diaphragm to push the notes out. It's much more natural and is less likely to hurt your vocal cords. It's called support because there's proper air support behind the notes.
    Those who strain have been trained to just reach the note in whatever way they can. They haven't received proper training. They haven't been taught how singing works inside the body, they're just told to make it sound good.
    Those who support have be trained very properly and have been taught how singing works inside your body, not just how it sounds.
    Straining makes notes sound pitchy and out of tune sometimes. Those who strain generally sound younger, even if they aren't young in age.
    Support is much more powerful, and you usually hear more vibrato in it. Those who use support sound much more mature.

      Helena Wang ok but there are different types of "fabulous" singers. Obviously i dont think they should damage themselves, but they dont only qualify as "fabulous" if their technique is perfect 100% of the time.
      To those who dont study about singing, a lot of the time you dont even notice the technical errors and you just like the tone/emotion of the voice, the melody, the manipulation, or you're impressed by the note/length,strength etc

    • @IndianaJonas96

    • @hhelenawang
      @hhelenawang 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      that's true, but good technique never impedes a performance. Of course the ability to entertain is also really important, and a performance with pure technique and no excitement isn't worth anything, but I'm speaking as a musician that knows a little (not a lot) about singing and I can say for a fact that it stresses me out listening to performers sing without good technique. It's not that it makes me enjoy the music less, I really just worry for their voices... technique breeds longevity, and I worry about those who don't have it because their voices won't last their career! Also just as a person, there are so many average singers that people think are amazing that I just don't understand. There are quite a few kpop singers who truly have a gift and yet there are those that are praised who barely measure up. It's the hype that really frustrates me. It's demonstrative of a misinformed audience and probably a really stressed out idol.

    For people who can't tell the difference between strained and supported, from a view of someone who doesn't know about singing from a professional point of view but just a music lover:
    Pretty much every time someone strains their voice while singing I can physically feel it in my forhead and my nose because when I hear that kind of sound I can feel that the singer uses a lot of force/air and probably can't breath properly (often I momentarily stop beathing when singers strain their voices)
    I don't know if this is this happens to me because my brain thinks the voice I hear is my voice...
    When I hear a voice which is supported I can feel it more in the back of my head/throat and it almost feels like I can breath better.

      The first thing you learn while learning how to sing is the right posture and how to relax your jaw. Strained notes are being forced out and happen because you tense your jaw. That's really bad for your vocal chords. With the right technique you can learn how to avoid that. That's also how you can hear if someone had vocal education or if they are just "people who sing".

    • @victory_ao
      @victory_ao 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Solji strains because she has high notes in choruses and she has to constantly strain for the notes

    • @victory_ao
      @victory_ao 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Sohyang and solji are not the same person. Their vocal ranges are different... And there is a reason why solji is in a group and sohyang isnt

    • @a-aronza380
      @a-aronza380 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Vocal fach isn't an excuse (Both are full lyric sopranos), so if she has to strain because she keeps on hitting high notes that shows her limited technique.

      MY ANYMELODY No, technically, SoHyang is. SoHyang has better vocals and a wider vocal range, heck she sounds beautiful out in the cold on a winter day (it actually happened). But that's your opinion. I guess some people just dont like to admitt facts.

    Straining occurs too often nowadays. They just teach them to reach the note, not the bells and whistles of how to sing. I haven't been in choir yet but I've learned from many people about this.

    People also seem to forget it’s not like all of these artists strain every time they hit these notes. Most of the time they start straining when they feel they missed a breath and know they can’t get the note in without their voice breaking.
