    Octaves, notes & annotation:
    (This may be super obvious, but I had to look it up to understand and thought I'd share)
    Looking at a piano, to get a visual of the possible notes, 8 white keys in a row are an octave. There are a total of 8 octaves on the piano from 1 (lowest) to 8 (highest). The first note in an octave is called C, so C4 = first note in 4th octave. However, the 8th note is actually the C note in the next octave, so really it's 7 notes: C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4, B4 (then C5). The black keys on the piano are semi-tones: Sharp (marked #) =half a tone higher and flat (marked b) = half tone lower.
    hope this helps :) great video btw!

    Sohyang straining was like more than 10 years ago already, now strain is not in her vocabulary. Im wishing Seungyeon, Haeri and Ailee (once she gets balanced in her mix) will do to!

      Well unless their technique will regress, which it probably will at some point. Hyorin's vocal health was damaged pretty badly after straining it for so long. I guess it's pretty much just a matter of becoming aware of their vocal health and taking rests whenever they should. Also it's very possible that they would never be able to be aware of and fix their bad vocal habits and ruin their vocals in the long run inevitably.

    Actually, you can find a lot of examples of strain for SoHyang, and I think it's really fascinating. If you go back several years ago, her technique was light years behind what it is now. It was like she went to some magic vocal boot camp and came out the world's best singer. I suggest looking it up because it's not only super interesting, it's also a great lesson in what hard work can get you. She wasn't just born that talented, bitch *earned it.*

    I hate how female idols are somehow forced to always sing way out of their range. Most of the times they have lower voices than what they are supposed to sing.

    • @hanitaturnermclachlan4327
      @hanitaturnermclachlan4327 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. I 100% agree with you on this. Their voices are treated inhumane and a lack of appreciation for how the voice works. They shouldn't be forced to sing outside their natural voice because it's centered differently. Then what they're extended to be capable of going outside. Also it's abuse of the voice.

  • @dokiepkosa
    @dokiepkosa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I appreciate that you compared them to themselves. It just goes to show that a singer isn't "bad" just because they have some vocal issues, they're just pushing themselves to far and need more time to develop their range.

    Thank you for this video! Well made but simple enough to understand. It’s easier to understand strain vs support when hearing it from the same singer’s voice. And it’s done in a way where it’s not pinning one singer against another so you’re not putting anyone down :)

    I just have to say that it’s great that there are even this many examples. In Western music, there are only a handful of singers who can support at all, let alone this high. While there are plenty of idols who are improperly trained and use poor technique, I appreciate that companies at least put some effort into training. Western artists mostly seem not to care.

    Its so interesting that so many female kpop singers can't consistently support up to an F5 belt. They're clearly mostly sopranos if not mezzos.
    I wonder if it has anything to do with trying too hard to maintain their light, girly, and youthful tone.
    Like in variety shows, they will scream and shout if teased, etc. and it will actually be supported high belts even though they're not singing 😂

    I feel like everytime I see these discussions, there isn’t any, but ought to be, a bigger distinction between “unsupported” and “strained”.
    I don’t have exceptionally well trained ears so in like 95% of cases I can’t actually tell when someone is “supporting” or not, but I can get ally heat strain, or something that is not pleasing to my untrained ears.
    Plenty of times I listen to imo beautiful singing and vocalizations but someone will say they’re not supporting. Other times the same thing applies but I can hear them essentially screeching.
    So there must be a difference between supported, unsupported, and strained singing.

      Sounding good is subjective so singers with a vocal colour you like can sound good even when straining. Also they can still maintain good placement while straining like Yeonji or have a heady mix like Bada which makes the strain less obvious.
