      @@jon79jw61 there are mood supplements on the market that combine 5htp and l-theanine, usually for anxiety. I'm not sure that 5htp would be the best product for focus and energy. Maybe do some research into l-tyrosine. But we're all difference, so you could just start on a low dose and see how it affects you

      great video, I just discovered 5htp and feel good effects for anxiety and depression, I turned to it because I had to wait 3 weeks to see my doctor to get back on citalopram, so I tried this in the mean time and am happy to stick with it instead of citalopram, I like that I can just buy it instead of having to go through the inadequate health system here in the UK. I've been on citalopram 3 times, and every time the doctor ended up weaning me off again because I felt normal again, but then a few months later I'd need to go back on it, and that on off process felt depressing in itself as a concept. Anyway my question is, in your opinion is 5htp generally suitable for long term use? Or do you think it will cause the brain to produce less serotonin at some point, or build a tolerance to it. Thanks.

    • @alanpartridge8253
      @alanpartridge8253 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DrJanelleSinclair Ah I've just seen that you've already answered that. "Unfortunately there's no long term studies on 5-HTP. It's shown to be safe in studies for 1 year." And someone else found it pooped out eventually for them. I guess it's a temporary solution and life improvements can be made with the extra boost it gives you.

      @@DrJanelleSinclair Some important points not mentioned in this presentation;
      Tryptophan is an amino acid, therefore it competes for absorption with other proteins.
      This is why it is advised to take on an empty stomach, and not at meal times! (you can also take with a small amount of carbohydrate, piece of apple, a cracker, to also aid absorption) It is also advisable only to take once a day in the evening when the natural serotonin / melatonin cycle is active.
      Also, it is very important to also take L-Tyrosine (amino acid) 500-1000mg (empty stomach) once daily in the morning for the length of time you supplement with 5-htp. Serotonin and Dopamine are on the same axis, that is, if you increase one, you force down the other, which can cause all sorts of unwanted effects and delay relief from depression.

    Took my first dose yesterday and normally at the store or out in public I’m constantly anxious thinking everybody is watching me (when I know they’re not). I went to the store yesterday and noticed when I got to the car I was absolutely unconcerned about anybody at all. I was able to stand in line and all that was on my mind was what I was going to do later for dinner when I’d normally be antsy to get the hell out of there. I also have insomnia and take 50 mg of Benadryl to get to sleep. I slept and only woke up twice when I usually wake up about once every hour and had a dream where I laughed myself awake. I haven’t had any dreams like that since I was a kid. I will definitely keep 5htp around.

    Dr Sinclaire, I take 200mg (time release) in the morning on empty stomach but with other supplements. I was paralyzed by depression and anxiety but no more. If anything, I'm a bit too chill and calm. Also I find I only need to take it once per day. FYI I also take SAM-e 800 mg at the same time with no ill effects. I just wish I'd known about this earlier in life.

    Have tried just about every type of antidepressant. They eventually stop being effective about 4 - 6 weeks in without a big increase and that brings more side effects, which ruin any positive effect the medication had. So frustrating and has left me feeling hopeless for years that I'd ever get better. I eat well, exercise and meditate already which makes my depression so much more difficult to kick. Hopefully a trial of 5-HTP will give me some life back, as some people have also reported my issue with antidepressants with 5-HTP being the overall solution.

Because I've heard with prescribed anti-depressants, if you plan on coming off them, you're not supposed to come off them suddenly, as it could greatly impact your mood, and you should very gradually come off them? Although, I haven't heard many cases in people coming off anti-depressants, but more like increasing their doses more and more...

    Doctor, warm hello from India. I consumed tryptophan in June, and noticed immediate improvement in my mood and fibromyalgia. Within two days, my brain was working the best it had worked in years. I was blown away!!
    Also my digestion the first few days was remarkable! However, by fourth day, I started feeling drowsy. And this was on just 500mg once a day dose of tryptophan. I eventually settled to taking tryptophan every alternate day and it worked well for me. I could never again feel the way I did on the second day after starting tryptophan - I was almost operating like Sherlock Holmes, no kidding! But anyway I was still content feeling the way I did. It was way better than how I was before tryptophan.
    Anyway, when that bottle finished towards September end, I got a new one but gradually I realised it didn't suit my stomach. It would trigger a bad case of IBS. I changed the brand, that also didn't help. I last week got 5htp, but its first two doses itself triggered the ibs again. How can I consume it without this IBS side effect. Would love some advice from you

      (If you healthy enough) try exercising an hour 3x a week. Like really break a sweat where you are temporarily out of breath. If you are healthy enough.....start with a stretch then go for a fast walk for 1min and then jog for 3-5 mins till you are tired or you are getting weak. Now your body is warmed up take a min break and do pushups and situps or other lifting things. End with a stretch and lots of water. Also get vitamin D blood work done. That effects the mood if it is low you will be depressed. Being a guy I take vitamin D supplements and try to hit the gym a few times a week and feel great.
      Oh if you started birth control I think that could make you depressed BUT I'm not sure.

    I am going to try this. I am older and going thro divorce. There is absolutely NOTHING that gives me joy or peace or contentment. I sit with my new friends and talk with them, but inside i am dead and i want to get up and run away, but i force myself to stay with my friends. They have no idea how i feel inside. I will give this a try and report back later.

    What about tolerance, rebound and dependance? Are these issues present with 5HTP?

    5htp and pregnancy? I have severe depression and anxiety and even though doctors have tried putting me in all types of antidepressants, 5htp (200mg) was the only thing that works and with no side effects. I would like to get pregnant but I'm affraid the doctors will try and take me out of 5htp again and I will go back to feel miserable and with suicidal thoughts...I want to be pregnant and taking what makes me feel the best (which is 5htp)..

      That's not an easy one Mariana. Unfortunately there are no studies on 5HTP's safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but there's no evidence that it causes problems either. Some people prefer to use it rather than antidepressant medications. It's about balancing the risks versus the benefits.

    You have very good information that should have the Best Audio, rooms often have reverberation off of hard walls that can be helped by hanging up foam or large tapestry, blankets or other such materials... the room should be "dead" to echo as you can make it...the floor also should have a rug, Ideally also the ceiling but 5 out of 6 flat surfaces will be fine. A
    I found the slightest reverb that you may not even notice made your accent harder for my ears and brain to absorb. Thank You.

    Hi u just mentioned that above 225mg could worse the anxiety. But 100mg three times a day is 300mg.. bit confusing

    • @DrJanelleSinclair
      @DrJanelleSinclair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry you found it confusing. I'm providing standard dosages - 50-100 mg three times a day. But every person is different, so you may have to adjust your dose according to how you respond. Some people may have anxiety if they go over 75mg three times per day.

    Thank you for such an informative video! I’ve been taking 5htp for 3 months now and when I try to stop taking it my depression comes back. Is it safe to take 5htp for the rest of my life? I really don’t want to experience depression again, nor do I want to take strong antidepressants.

      1st I'm not a doctor so this is NOT medical advice. From what I read you shouldn't take it for longer than 3 weeks or your body will notice the increased levels and slow down its natural production. So 3 weeks on 1 week off and repeat if necessary. From the limited research done they aren't sure long term effects but early tests show it might cause bone density issues with long term use.
      My doctor told me to wear a heavy backpack or a weighted vest (think weight room weighted vest) and walk around for a while each day to load up my bones and maintain it. He said you need the weight over your shoulders evenly so your skeletal structure all has a slight load on it then walk with good posture.
      I find excercise in general naturally lifts my mood and I rarely need my 5htp. I did a blood test and found my vitamin D level was extremely low so I take a supplement for that which also helps my mood. I try to cut out lots of carbs from my diet too since sugar (carbs turn into sugar in the body) naturally helps cancer grow and is as addictive as some illicit street drugs.
      Pretty much take 1 week off a month and break a good sweat working out jogging pushups ect (if your doctor says it's safe) and eat clean food going low carb but high healthy fats and proteins or keto diet. Get your 8-9hr of sleep and make sure you aren't deficient in vitamins especially vitamin D.

    I started taking max doses because i had my medication, methylphenidate 20mg x3 a day stolen. I understand that it barely works on serotonine, but this really helped some factors and i can sleep well for once

  • @SilentPresence

    I took HTP three nights; about 50 mg and got really bad headaches. Did not feel good the next day. Melatonin does same thing to me and makes me tired the next day, even 1mg. I think some people are just sensitive too these, not sure why? I have been taking Theanine for 2 nights and this might be more my thing. Relaxes me so I can sleep. I feel just a little relaxed with Theanine the next day but will cut dose in half and see if that helps.

      When I would miss taking 5 htp for one, I would feel okay the day of, then feel drowsy and cranky the next day. The brain is constantly trying to feel balanced, so stopping taking 5 htp suddenly can make it feel thrown off.
