  • At Amen Clinics-one of the world leaders in applying brain imaging science to help people with emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and learning issues-calls from people experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts are way up.
According to a new poll, 45% of Americans say the coronavirus pandemic is impacting their mental health. This is evidenced by the increased use of antidepressant medications during the lockdown. According to a recent report, the number of new prescriptions for antidepressants filled during the pandemic jumped by nearly 19%. This isn’t surprising considering the pandemic is ramping up stress, worry, and isolation. All of this can trigger your vulnerabilities. But before you call your doctor and ask for antidepressants, you need to get the facts about these drugs.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are one of the most commonly prescribed types of antidepressants, and they come with a laundry list of side effects, including sexual dysfunction, insomnia, headaches, and nausea. They also carry a black box warning, meaning they pose the most serious and dangerous potential side effects, such as suicidal thoughts. In addition, once you start taking SSRIs, it can be very hard to stop.
The good news is, there are alternatives to antidepressants.

Took meds since i was a child. At 28, i became suicidal. I stopped taking all the meds 33 years ago.
I still have very high highs and very low lows, but working through them without meds.
Tons of B vitamins. Moderate daily exercise. Consistent sleep hygiene. Removed all negative people, places and things. Developed a spiritual connection with my Higher Power. Journaling.
I feel for everyone struggling with mental health. Love yourself and believe in yourself. You are stronger than you know, but treat yourself gently.

Most doctors want to help people. They just do it in the manners that they know. It's the same with psychiatrists with antipsychotics in schizophrenia. They think they're helping people even if they're only slapping a bandaid on it, and in the case of antipsychotics, a very unpleasant bandaid.

A Non - Prescription for Depression.
A long time ago, a college professor asked me for suggestion to help his adult daughter who was depressed. I hared with him something Edgar Cayce suggested to a woman he was talking to going through the same thing. He told her 1. to draw closer to God and God will draw closer to you. #2. Go and help those who are less fortunate then you and you'll see just how blessed you are. Also you'll feel good about helping them feel better in their time of need. I agree with him as I've volunteered a few times myself and one time an an elderly homeless woman made a point to stop me as I was serving food to say thank you and how grateful she was we were there to help. So the professor said that he could not wait to tell his daughter the suggestion. He did and she did start volunteering and it helped lifted her spirits.

What I’ve learned from my iatrogenic injury caused by psych meds and medical negligence is that deficiencies in minerals, vitamins, hormones imbalances, and a toxic environment (physical and social) cause health issues that are misdiagnosed as mood disorders or mental illness, when in reality we may just be deficient in something and/or surrounded by a very toxic environment.
I was perfectly healthy and fit over two years ago, and suddenly started having panic attacks, so after few tests (non thorough or enough testing) my doc put me on a benzo and on a trial and error of ssris, and finally a super toxic atypical antidepressant that have caused me tons of health issues I never had before.
I probably had a mineral/vitamin deficiency, and they didn’t caught it. My issue could have been solved naturally, but instead, I was given toxic poison that almost killed me.
Do deep research before accepting any type of treatment...it will save your life!

Thank you for the information! I don't ask medical doctors about how to stay healthy. I go to them for diagnoses or if I have a broken bone, but when it comes to how to BE healthy, they don't have a clue. Food is medicine and I cured myself without my MD's prescriptions. I watched the number of pill bottles in my father's bathroom increase every year until he died from a massive cardiac arrest at the age of 70. No thank you, I'll stick to my farmer's market.

Not always true, bipolar disorder II or unipolar depression or bipolar I with manic cycling is a CHEMICAL imbalance and responds well to mood stabilizers and anti depressants...yes good food, exercise and good sleep, supplements/vitamins, avoidance of all drugs and inflammatory substances are essential...but sometimes drugs ARE necessary to stabilize mood and behavior harmful to the person or others

This can be from repeated incidences of childhood abuse, domestic violence, rape, combat, etc. When the brain has been hijacked by traumatic events, it's not so easy to just put on a happy face and get over it. What's needed is work with a knowledgeable practitioner and all of the other treatments Dr Amen recommends here (diet, exercise, supplements, etc).

This is why I like him, he's not just prescribing antidepressants to people, which I feel is one of the main problems with psychiatry is that you go to a psychiatrist or psychologist, and they automatically say: "put them on antidepressants" antidepressants are one of the worst things to put someone on IMO especially teenagers why the hell would you give a teenager a developing mind, antidepressants? NOT good idea. Usually when teenagers suffer from depression, more often than not it's because of some kind of trauma NOT a chemical imbalance within the brain.

Thank you for sharing this information. I know from experience that if you are having mood swings or depression, your PCP should refer you to a psychiatrist and start counseling and get to the root of the depression instead of putting a bandaid on the symptom. I was diagnosed with bi-polar 20 years ago and I am still in counseling for maintenance on my mental wellbeing and my medication dosage has changed as my bipolar improved and my dosage level is very low compared to the beginning. It is important to stay in therapy while on your prescribed medications. I have been the happiest for the past 15 years since my meds have leveled and am now in maintenance.

I am a very happy positive person.
Starting at COVID, extremely last 18 months.
Elevator kept dropping.. stories. Like a slam at stop.
Last 7 months, "evil" has attacked.
I read your post and feel like this happened to you also. Living life.. even aware of the peripheral vision narrative, and planned a, b, and c. Just to move on with cases covered and considered.
Last three months after losing a young niece , 2nd I. Two years, and I'm crying at some point everyday, while trying to hang into ME.
I NEVER CRIED, I'm too logical. Lol and always bring positive to the dark.
I refuse to take meds, I'll come out the other side,
But I wondered how YOU are doing? And let you know, you been seen , heard, and thought of. A year later..
Universe wants us to focus on A THING. the rise of frequencies that the negative Crap is using to try to push those like us to the edge. Coming at me from all sides. So I've kept Alone for a few months.
I just found out I have been fighting NEUROBERRIOSIS. From a tick bite. It's more neurological than Lyme, I thought I was getting dementia (58). Did two uv antibiotic and ten day oral.
I CANT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE! A COUPLE WEEKS , and ME is coming back. But it left me in FLIGHT OR FIGHT LAST 18 MONTHS.... NOT ANXIETY OR DEPRESSSION. and took this long for my doc to do a full panel for tic and mosquito bites , not just a Lyme test.
Got an MRI coming up to confirm but the round of antibiotics is helping me get back to me. ( eat very clean if you ever take antibiotics , lots of pre and probiotic foods)
This NB is usually a southern thing, so doc never thought of it, but there is a few pockets up here in the NE..
I hope you are well.. I love DR Amen .. I am hoping to be able to make an appt with him and get the rest of my head straight. Lol
I don't know what I did, likely a thing I did not do, but my main people are not speaking to me, that's fine. Better they show their. Colors now than when the SHTF and id be USED by them for the prep I have done last few years.
The UNIVERSE IS letting us off the hook with obligations that are not our path. We just need to thank it. And SEE where they are redirecting us.
We are here to bring the light, and it may be strangers that need it most. Our immediate circle, knows us and our "thing" already.
This responce is all over the place, but I think there's a thing here you needed to hear...

Wonderful talk Dr Amen! Years ago I witnessed a relative "playing" SO violently with her young 3 year old grandson. He was sitting on her lap facing her & he had his little arms outstretched & his head tilted back, while she had hold of his hands & was violently pulling him toward her extremely fast & aggressively so as to snap his head & neck; whiplashing his head & neck over & over & over. I wanted to say something because I'm a nurse & I could see how violent & damaging her actions were. But her pattern is to get very angry if anyone tries to redirect or teach her - no matter how carefully, tactfully, or kindly one's approach to her she is. I COULD NOT BELIEVE she had no concept of how violent her "play" was. She was only focused on 1-putting in a show for everyone watching her, & 2-having the little grandson think she was just the "MOST fun Grandma" ever. I don't know if that grandson went on to develop any issues/problems after that "Grandma" so severely & so repetitively whiplashed his little head & neck. I pray he is ok. I rarely see that child's "Grandma." She would also follow her grandkids around & literally shove cookies into their mouths as they were playing. It was beyond awful to watch her.

Thank you for your book and these periodic remainders, particularly during this pandemic time. I have eliminated sugar and most flours from our diet, I started banging at the piano with one of these cell phone applications. I do breathing meditations with my 86 year old mother, and I try to be in charge of the negative ants. All in all, I feel pretty good. Also, my dogs help me stay sane and focus. Lexapro sold in my country as cipram is the only med that doesn’t turn me into a zombie but it does nothing for the anxiety or racing thoughts either. In fact I feel like I constantly need to do something and while the resultant productivity is satisfying, the constant overwhelm is exhausting. Still it’s better than the others but I’m still looking for a solution after being on it intermittently for 10 years

It's true, healing can be accomplished in many ways. What helped me was stepping back from negative influences, getting back into reading and living the Holy Word Of God!! His teachings are based in reality. There is no scamming, no politics, nothing of the things that can be found in our cultures today. I learned focusing on myself too much got me nowhere. I learned to think about others, especially those in need. It's easier than you think. The human condition is complex, but when you stop putting yourself first, then comes the inner peace. Take the time to eat healthier foods, take walks, also important is stay connected to other people. If you're able to give a helping hand, do so. Helping out is never a small thing!! I didn't used to do these things, so it is no wonder that I was depressed. I stopped taking Prozac in 1999, when the psych. wanted to up my dosage and write a Rx for sleeping pills. Sleep problems was a side effect for me. That's when I said enough already. I'm so glad I did.👍👍👍👍

Thank you Dr. Amen for your video. You bring up good points about how important it is to take care of our minds. Recently I had a pharmacist review my medications and during that interview he asked me several questions to determine if I could be depressed. Due to arthritis and pain he figured I was depressed and needed antidepressants. I then consulted with my family doctor and when I brought this matter up she replied that she did not want me on this medication because of serious side effects that could impact my CKD. Also she mentioned that several of her patients were on these meds and we’re having difficulty getting off of them. It may be that doctors like her I rethinking their stand on these pharmaceuticals.

      J. Levo, Life and people will never happen exactly the way you want so don't allow others to control your happiness. Avoid having expectations and attachments as you will be let down. Good people suffer not because they are bad but because they don;t realize when to stop being good. In life there are only 2 problems-mind and the body. To feel better reduce negative thoughts and overthinking. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Observe your breath sensations before sleep, in college, at work, taking a walk, when reading, etc.etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

I developed the most horrific med injury....AKATHISIA....at the end of 2019. It's been pretty horrific to see the system from the inside, and to learn the true story of how the DSM was created. It's absolutely evil. All I do anymore is spread awareness. I had no idea this world of suffering existed until I entered it myself. Most doctors have absolutely zero clue about this stuff. Good doctors are rare. Thank you for all you do. More people need to know. I wish I'd known, 10 years ago, before I was polydrugged into oblivion ...and for no reason...I had a mystery illness after having my 5th baby and since no doctor could figure it out, they all agreed it was "all in my head." I never had a mental illness, but doctors went "off label" and tried all kinds of black-box-warning meds on me. Sadly, most people only learn about this when they become a victim. I used to praise my meds as they made me sicker and sicker. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

I have the very same story. I had a severely pinched nerve in my lower right buttock. It was an athletic injury.
My GP and every specialist she sent me to didn’t examine me, they didn’t listen to me and they dismissed me as having vulvodynia ( without doing the proper tests ) and cyclothymia…..utter nonsense.
The pain was so bad that I couldn’t breathe. It burned 🔥🔥🔥every time I sat and after internal PT I couldn’t lie down anymore. I also.was poly drugged to the point of losing cognitive function for years.
I got help and answers out of province and in Minnesota yet still, the doctors where I live neglected me, and left me to die in agony from severe sleep deprivation.
Long story….I hired a registered nurse consultant and she advocated for my surgery. The nerve was severely pinched in three spots but it was successfully released from the ligaments and fascia it was stuck on.
I have suffered and it’s because doctors were too lazy to listen to me, they profiled me, they committed fraud in their consult notes and all they did is prescribed medication management. I needed surgery. I’m lucky to be alive.

I really love ssri's for short term sort of emergency use. Like constant panic attacks, take Lexapro for six months so you can have the strength to do the therapy and make the lifestyle changes. So for things like that I think they can be incredibly helpful for giving you the edge to try to get better but not a long term bandaid. Although some people don't really have the privilege to see a therapist.... :(

Agree! I started taking an antidepressant when my mom was diagnosed with lymphoma. I tried Citalopram then switched to Effexor. Titrate dose up and down. I accidentally took a higher dose and it made me psychotic and turned me bipolar. I am always tired and irritable. Step 1 turn off the news. 2. Turn off the news. 3. Listen to music. Meditate. 4. Eat healthy. 5. Get out into sunlight. DSMV criteria cutoff is 6 weeks 6 months. Diagnosis is based on time frame. Get sleep!

Um no sorry that's not going to make you bipolar from a few times of taking the higher dose if that's what you meant. Stop spreading ignorant information. Usually to be bipolar you have to have it in your family. Theres a difference in some symptoms vs diagnosis. Your brain can even create new neural pathways. Thats how people who were on strong addictive drugs can heal.bipolar is a severe life debilitating disease and is not solved just from those things listed, they merely can help. What you said is extremely toxic to make people think they can do it alone and don't need professional help. But I'm glad becoming even more ignorant by not watching the news is making you happier. 🙄

Thank you so much! This video confirms my thoughts and suspicions regarding antidepressants and their inappropriate/irresponsible use. My son suffered four concussions between 2011 - 2015 and instead of treating the cause (the concussions of which he still has long term effects), they immediately wanted to treat the symptom (depression with antidepressants). This has taken us down a tragic ten year path of unabated suicidal depression with multiple in-patients, PHP's, IOP's, and "attempts" (SI related). I feel the drugs have been ineffective at best and the cause of my son's constant SI, at worst. He is now 21 years old, and does not remember a time when he did not have constant SI, every waking hour. We need help and resolution. We have tried neurofeedback, optimizing his D3, B12, Iron, magnesium, but need to do so much more. He is currently completing his third in-patient due to SI and I don't think I can survive another.
