While pushing the metal ribbon/bands out with a plastic knife you mentioned not to scratch/scrape the metal coating of the black ring. I noticed large parts of my metal coating is missing from the black ring exposing the rusted metal underneath. Have I been eating that stuff because it has obviously come off?!
The black coating is an electrical insulating material to keep the heating element spring from touching bare metal and shorting out . Don't put water in the hot sugar spinner or it can cause damage to the black material and cause bits of it to crack and pop off . Replace it he said if that happens .
I replaced the heat ribbon on my machine because it started to smoke and could not remove the gunk out of it. Could you post a link to the alligator cable you are using here? Couldn't even find it on Amazon.
If the machine is sparking that’s an easy fix by removing the brush, then sanding it so it’s even, then putting em back. You’ll need needle nose pliers though. And possibly a more aggressive sanding on the middle to prevent it from happening again.
@@gregorydahl No, it’s because the brush can get worn down unevenly, and eventually it’ll spark when only a tiny part is touching it. The sandpaper is to make it a flat surface. Once the machine is running again, it takes a few minutes to get going but by then it’s good as new.
Is there anything I can do if the heat ribbon is too long and won't fit inside the spinner head? I've been trying to squish and squeeze it but it won't squish back into place how it originally was
BIG thank you for sharing this very well made step by step video. More importantly, thank you for sharing the alligator clip power cable trick! That tip alone is 🔥 Based on your experience, how often would you suggest performing a deep clean (after how many servings)? Also, is there a trick to making sure all the water is safely removed from the double ribbon head (besides letting it air dry 24-48 hours)? Merci.
We clean based on visual inspection of the ribbons (if they are clogged or not). After you let it air dry, you can run the machine with no heat to ensure it is dry enough.
I torn into my machine today to do my semi annually cleaning. . The head wants to turn hard. It looks kike one of the brushes is pressed on to one of the copper strips. What do i need to do? Thanks.
I'm having the same issue. Were you able to get the bands back in at all? I'm currently sitting here squeezing them together in hopes they become short enough to fit back into the spinner head, hoping there's a solution
Thanks loads for sharing this video, it's been great. I tried to burn off the heating element using jumper cables from a car which was running and they didn't even get slightly hot. Is that me being stupid using the wrong tools or do I need new elements?
First, where do you even get one of those corded gator clamps? Second, how do you re-tighten the coils on the heating band enough to get it back in the housing if they’re stretched out too much?!
Restoring a early 70s x-15r model for my girlfriend ( lots of memories with her deceased father regarding this machine) great video helped out a lot. would love to pick someone's brain on some unanswered questions from OP or someone with extensive knowledge in this model.
@@spunparadise8823 I doing a complete tear down and rebuild of the machine and going to try and keep as many of the original parts as possible. Wires are dry rotted heating element is shot ect ect most of the parts gold medal still sells that need to be replaced but the switches are no longer made to my knowledge can I ultra sonic clean them or clean by hand / polish the contact points Especially the fine tube heat switch. It looks like ceramic and medal basically
No, do not clean that often with this method. This is for extremely high volume production, being used A LOT. We only do this cleaning 2-3 times a year and we use these machines 10 hours a day. Thanks!
I really like this video. I have a Gold Medal Whirlwind machine. Are you sure it's okay to put the band AND ribbon in water? I think the user manual says to not submerge the ribbon (silver heating element) in water, but if it's not a big deal, it will save much time.
Yes, we've cleaned it that way for 10 years with no issues. Just always make sure you don't get water in the actual ceramic head. Hope that helps, thanks!
I always thought it was to protect the terminals from the sugar, but we have quit using them as the sugar has no effect on them. We also removed the terminal strip and connect straight to the screws. Works good for us and we make cotton candy for our circus every year, so it runs a long time when we use them.
Great video. Thanks so much for posting. One further item - the heat dial on my machine is very hard to turn. I can get it to turn with a wrench or some force. Can I use a little Wd-40 on it or what would you recommend?
I find that when it happens on my machines sugar has gotten behind the dial or the dial has moved to far towards the plate. Hot water takes care of the first (remember to dry all moisture out before using), and resetting the dial distance will take care of the other. Mine has an Allen screw that can be loosened on the dial for adjustments.
Hi there just turned mine on, seems to be sparking around the brushes slip rights? Could this be a symptom they need changing or something else ? Thanks for your help
Any electrical supply house will have them. Just make sure they can handle the load. 12 gauged wire should be big enough. Too small wire will melt from the amperage.
If sparking it usually means the electrical connections on the ribbon are likely too close to the aluminum in the head of the machine. Try bending the wires away. OR some of the film has been chipped off of the black band, which means the black band would need to be replaced. Thanks!
If the bottom of the two ribbon wires is too close to the head of the machine it will spark, you need to re-bend the ribbon wire to give it some more clearance.
Wow, great way to renew the ribbons. Thanks for informative video!

Does sugar get in there ? Or is that the reason never pour waterthrough to steam it clean .

I thought there would be little round holes in a metal band around the outside of the sugar melting spinner .
at 1:45 you took out 4 small screws. I need just one of those silly screws for our machine. Do you know how I can get one?

@Spun Paradise Hello might we get help with our troubled machine?
How often do you need to clean using this method? Each time you use the machine?

Is there anyone that does this cleaning to make sure it is done right? Not sure if I need any parts replaced.. Around Indianapolis, Indiana.
Yes, I recommend looking for a concession dealer/distributor in your area. Gold Medal may be able to tell you who is in your area as well.

There no heat coming g out any idea
One of the brushes could be worn out, or simply knocked off the middle cylinder.

I recommend contacting Gold Medal for a replacement part.

Rings **
Dirty rings, worn brushes, weak holding spring or clogged brush holder (brush doesn't move easily leaving a gap and arc will jump over).
Seen others ask it. Where do you get your alligator clips?
Any electrical supply house will have them. Just make sure they can handle the load. 12 gauged wire should be big enough. Too small wire will melt from the amperage.

What are the gator clips connected to for current?

If the machine sparks when heat is turned on what causes it
If sparking it usually means the electrical connections on the ribbon are likely too close to the aluminum in the head of the machine. Try bending the wires away. OR some of the film has been chipped off of the black band, which means the black band would need to be replaced. Thanks!
For me it usually meant the brushes have an uneven contact.

Why is my whirlwind cotton candy machine sparking
If the bottom of the two ribbon wires is too close to the head of the machine it will spark, you need to re-bend the ribbon wire to give it some more clearance.
How much volt you used on it??
The same voltage the machines uses. In America it's 120 volts at 15 Amps. Europe uses a different system (50 Hertz at 220 volts).
Exelente video buen mantenimiento
Outstanding job
Thanks!

Not specifying the power used to cook the bands off doesn't really make that a good tip.
