  • I actually figured it out. I needed a smaller thrust washer.

That was the problem. My old prop was pre 82 and had the thicker thrust washer. the new prop is post 82. I went down to the prop shop and got the right spacer.

Where does the spacer go? On the end next to the prop right b4 the nut and the codderpin? Or does it go under the prop on the shaft of it?

The guy at the shop has to give you the proper washer that comes with that Aluminum prop, the steel one is way different. It's said that when you change the hub , used the washer that comes with the hub, your steel is not the same as the one that should come with the prop

Exactly... I just bought a stainless steel from West Marine, and they sold a Torq II hub kit off the shelf and it didn't work. Hub kits are prop specific, stainless or aluminum

even with the increase in pitch to 21, wouldnt the planned reduction in rpms be almost negated because your going to aluminum? Al to SS is a difference of like 500 rpms on my 200hp v6 18footer. Al to SS (same spec) prop lost me 500rpm but gain 2.5mph

put the aluminum prop on. Then take a sledge hammer and give it a good wack until it's seated properly. - @John Henry

This guy is not intelligent at all. Banging up props on the floor. The black aluminum prop is sitting where it is supposed to be. The stainless steel prop needs a thrust washer spacer, your not supposed have the spline sticking out so the nut hits it. and the prop is not supposed to be snug inside the lower unit housing to much

Just did it to my boat. I did the opposite. I went from aluminum to stainless steel. Stainless steel wouldn't fit with or without the bearing

Im dealing with the exact same problem right now. I have the factory recommended thrust washer and also a smaller one that fits my shaft that came with my new prop. I guess I need to just go buy a bunch of thrust washer and try and find the thinnest one I can .

Your motor is a diesel? Why can't it operate at 5000 RPM!

looks like you either might need another diameter thrust hub , id bring both of your props and your old thrust hub / spacer , it might be either your wrong spacer or it maybe even be a wrong prop , but chances are it is a workable prop since your splines match up , you dont wanna over prop your boat id imagine it might kill your top speed

I don't know if you notice on the aluminum prop has a 2 dimensions circles and the steel doesn't . That's why it doesn't fit.

You need a thinner thrust washer between prop and gearcase, the proper one from Mercury is about half-inch thick, maybe slightly less.

seriously... u can go 5500 rpm or even 5600 rpm on the motor and then lastly... are you new to boating... as u are using the wrong thrust washer for the other prop ..... really didnt they tell you
