- In which Hank thinks a lot about being in the middle of nowhere, and what that means, and how every place is equally in it's placeness. He also shows off his sprained ankle, a broken down barn, a very cute calf and his tire-changing skills.

I am actually from Monida. I llved in the little house with the Monida sign at the top of the roof. It had paint back in those days. This is the first time I have seen what the town (what is left of it) looks like today. I haven't been back there since about 1988. My parents were killed in a car accident coming home. They lived there. I am living in California. I don't mind if I don't ever go back. The two largest buildings were a hotel and a large building next to it. They were torn down.
"It was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time."
You, sir, are a poet. Thank you. Also, I know it's been three years, but I hope your ankle's feeling better.
5 years now...
6 years
8 years now
9 years
@@emmasnyder9718 same, 9 years for me. Also we have the same last name, mine is just spelled with an i
There's something miraculous and ironic in that the video informing Nerdfighteria about Ester's death is sandwiched between John's birthday video and a video about visiting a ranch for a wedding.
Life goes on, I guess.
One of my favorite quotes ever is "I have seen the moon from the other side of the earth, and for that I am different." Guess that could apply to sunrises in fields.
Hope that ankle feels better. Keep it elevated.
After five months, I have watched every vlogbrothers video. This one, for the next-to-last line, is my favorite. I love the funny videos, but it is the profound videos like this one that keep me coming back to this channel and this wonderful community of people that I stumbled upon.
I love the final thought that you give about nowhere being "more of a place than I've been in a long time."
The area looked beautiful!
Monida: something like Texarkana, but with nobody, apparently.
West Texas, however, is even more nowhere, I assure you. There's a large chunk of it that's 3 hours drive from cellular service.
this is by far one of my favorite videos you have done hank.. It reminded me of something that most people forget and I think i was starting to forget myself. Life is not just what we call our four walls or the town in which we live but that it is all around us. Most important of all it taught me that if stop experiencing things you lose one of the most amazing pleasures in life and that is life itself
I think this is one of my favorite Thoughts From Places Videos and I still keep coming back to rewatch it becuase it never stops being beautiful.
this might just be my favorite vlogbrothers video
Hank, I am currently writing an essay explaining why I would like to study abroad and I couldn't help myself thinking that someone had put into words what I wanted to say and done a heck of a job. Then, I remembered that it was you in this video. Thank you for being awesome you and sharing it with us.
There's something calming about being nowhere. You're left with what you brought with you and your thoughts, and sometimes being put in that situation helps put everything else into perspective. That's part of the reason why I love getting away from the city and going camping. That, and you can see so many more stars out of the city.
Speaking as someone who was raised for 16 years in Idaho, it is very cool to be able to watch videos from around this area. I remember stopping by Monida on road trips from when I was young. Your footage from this area always makes me very reminicent. Thanks for that, and for everything you do. You truly are awesome, and I hope you never forget it.
For me, this was gold. It is truly splendid how every time you two post a video, I am reminded of why I continue to follow your channel. Your words are inspiring and your thoughts behind them are great and true. Thank you for choosing your words so magnificently. Giving us the chance to, not only ponder about in current matter, but also feel with our own hearts!
I am convinced that you will never let me leave one of your videos unaffected :P.
Thank you! And DFTBA.
I thoroughly love this video. It reminds me of what I love most about the vlogbrothers. Poetic, poignant, and quite simply beautiful. Thank you, Hank.
Hank! You are so right! I am watching this on my way home from hiking down to Havasupai Falls, which is in the middle of nowhere. Never before had I felt so at peace and seen so much beauty!
DFTBA!
very poetic hank. I love these new videos that take us on your adventures with voice overs. You and John are both really good at them
I like a good sunrise in the middle of nowhere myself. Especially a MT, ND, MN, WY, ID, WA, and OR type sunrise. They just seem better up north. And although at 40, and despite getting so sore and stiff from sleep on the ground, I love to tent.
Should you find yourself yearning for that feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, I highly recommend Iceland. And take your brother. It would be epic.
Ladies and gentlemen I found the first Vlogbrothers video i ever watched. The first video that came in my sub box when I subbed to the VB for some reason that escapes me...but it was a great reason because it made me subscribe.
@CrakenX i agree, that is a beautiful, beautiful quote for a beautiful, beautiful place.
every once and a while you make a video that just make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, i love that
I like it when your just driving and it seems like the no where goes on and on and on and then suddenly, you're at a place and you're somewhere.
I always look forward to your videos, Vlogbrothers! You guys are amazing!
That went from hilarious to beautiful and even profound. Thanks John. This brightened my day.
That is probably the most beautiful and truthful I have ever heard. So brilliant that you noticed and spoke about something most people would have written off.
The words that were spoken were just as beautiful as the video itself. You are fabulous, my friend.
well said hank, reminds me of my 17 hour descent and ascent into the grand canyon last week. what a hike. cheers
Wow. Thanks so much for sharing Hank. Everything you said is something I've always known, but the reminder to bring it back to the front of my mind is much appreciated.
thoughts from places is one of my favorite segments y'all do.
Thank you for everything vlogbrothers! you two are just absolutely amazing.
Hank, you're a badass
wow. that is a magnificent sunset, and the words that you choose to use with your images really got to me. Thank you for that:)
Ok. I forget what you guys are calling these thinking, talking, introspective videos, but I freaking love them.
You are beautiful Hank.
I love you guys because have things to say. You don't just talk to talk, you talk to inform the rest of us and i love that about the vlogbrothers.
"I just feel like I got as close to nowhere as I could get and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time". That's wonderfully poetic! I might put this in my quotes.
I look forward to watching your videos every Monday/Friday. Thanks so much for doing this: you're both awesome people, but you probably already know that.
That last thought was beautiful. That's how I felt this summer when I was out camping and hiking in the deserts of Petra and Wadi Rum in Jordan.
This is one of my favorite VB videos, because I want to go to nowhere.
that looks like the most peacful place i have ever seen. thank you hank for sharing that with all of us. dftba
naawww that was so beautiful.
i travelled with a group of my friends to the lake district and stood on top of a hill and at that point i experienced exactly what you expressed in this video. i could see for hundreds of miles (well, maybe not) and felt like at that point, even though i was in the middle of nowhere, it was almost like being at home.
Just because what we see out our windows becomes what think of as the world doesn't mean that there isn't a whole globe out there, just doing its thing, being itself, making life possible.
I just feel like I got as close to no where as I can get, and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time.
So good!
hank and john are two the most intelligent, thoughtful and eloquent people i've ever had the privilege of listening to.
I love the Thoughts from Places series. These are extra insightful.
Every time I watch your videos Hank, I learn something new.
this is actually quite beautiful! I especially like the bit about going to nowhere and actually being somewhere- I love that about the world!
Hi Hank and John.
i just started watching you're videos a couple weeks ago, and am finally up to April of this year. im loving the videos so far, and hope you keep them coming..
John; i finally found a store in my town that sells youre books :o but i only had enough money for Paper Towns. loving it so far. shall buy an abundance of katherines and looking for alaska when my budget allows. keep up the good work, and both of you, dont forget to be awesome !
That was a beautiful video, Hank. I love this series.
This vlog really made me think. Very deep my friend. I am very glad that you alright from you fall and that you had that spare.
Hank this was really great and beautiful.
it's like being no where and also very much somewhere at the same time.
Seeing places like that makes me really appreciate the world that we live in. There is so many beautiful places that are just waiting to be seen.
This video reminds me that while I might think I live in the middle of nowhere somethings, there are places a lot closer to nowhere than this.
And I definitely agree with you on the sound of cows/calves bawling, Hank. People say animals don't have feelings the way humans do, but obviously they haven't tried to sleep when the calves outside are bawling all night long about not having their moms nearby... most annoying thing ever.
More of these videos, pls!!! They are soooo good and inspiring.
I was born and raised in Sandpoint, Idaho...."nowhere". Now I live in Philadelphia... "somewhere." And sometimes, it's nice to see "nowhere" again, Thanks Hank :)
I love these. I love these with a passion. If I ever vlog, they will be like this.
Ahh makes me think of high school and middle school. I went to a K-12 expeditionary learning school for both. We went on lots of trips to places like this. I really miss getting up in the early morning and watching the sun rise while eating a bowl of warm outmeal, wrapped in a warm sweater or fuzzy camping blanket
Hank. Very nice with your choice of words this time. Poetic even.
Truly a poetic look into rural America.
That video was such an unexpected pleasure, thank you!
When I lived in Australia I remember going to the bush and being on a sheep farm with nothing for miles around. It's just an incredible experience being that secluded from what we consider normal civilization. I hope you had fun and that you feel better!
This is one of my top five favorite Nerdfighter videos of all time! Hank did indeed not forget to be awesome. :)
vlogbrothers videos are like Thoreau's words made into something I can hold. ty
That's a beautiful middle of nowhere, Hank. I've been to the one in Ecuador, and it's beautiful too.
that place looks like heaven. the past few days I have been longing for silence and solitude, and that looks like what you found.
i would love a little nothing in my life.
I occasionally get up early to watch the sunrise early, too! People always think I'm crazy. I just think it's a good reminder that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves, and it brings me great comfort that no matter what happens in life, we can always count on the sun rising..
i love you guys so much. Hank you have proved that you can be a deep author like john.
I'm glad you and john made thoughts from places a thing. it is a good thing. you should keep doing this thing. :)
Aw man, Hank, you're so poetic! Love hearing what you think about everything and nothing put in perspective like that :D
That sunrise is gorgeous. If I lived anywhere near Montana, I would go see it. Congrats on the blessing to see that, Hank. :) Sorry about your ankle. Get well soon!
DFTBA
Wow....this whole video seemed like one long but totally awesome piece of poetry. Hooray for Hank, the guy who turns a little bit of somewhere about a little bit of nowhere, into a little bit of something awesome.
Aw, Hank, you broke my heart when ya talked about the cows crying for their babies.
I fell in love with nowhere :)
Thanks!
That was a very beautiful sunrise. Nothing makes you appreciate nowhere better than a nice sunrise.
Hank Green!! We have the same shoes!!!! Also very insightful statement about nowhere being somewhere. I feel the same way when I go on week long hunting trips into the back country of montana. I live in Montana too!!! Actually in the same city as you but... it's whatever. Werd.
This video just made me happy.
Sometimes nowhere is a whole heck of a lot better than most somewheres.
That ending statement was just...Beautiful!
Hank...I'm happy that you showed the title of the book you're reading (even if unintentionally) so I could look it up on Amazon. Now...I really want to read it. It sounds fascinating. It helps that the author made a video about the book and his thoughts behind it. It makes it that much more appealing. You should sneak books you think we should read in your videos more often...it could just be inadvertent advertising.
i love the thoughts from places series. do more please!
Beautiful sunrise!
wow. just loved this video sooooo much. you made a reference in relation to plato's allegory of the cave
usually its john who makes thought provoking and really rather beautiful speeches about where he, and how it makes him think of the world. but that, was perfect :)
You and John are my heroes.
Ive never seen that barn before, but I feel inspired to paint it or something... something about it is artistically compelling, and I'm not even sure what
The ending was really poetic Hank, you ought to write a poem with that poetic-ness.
This is why I love it out west. We went to Yellowstone one year, and drove through lots of tiny towns, I think the lowest population we saw was...8? That is amazing to me, and I love that there is still places like that out there. Where there is "nothing".
This is like a video we would expect from John. Great job, Hank =D
The Yellowstone area seems like a fantastic place for a wedding- providing your friends and family don't mind the trip.
I'd love to live in Montana or Wyoming someday- I was born way out in the "middle of nowhere" and even though I moved too soon to remember what it was like, I think a part of nowhere stayed with me.
I half to say this is my favorite VB video!
This was very inspiring, Hank. Especially that last thought.
Lovely episode
What I truly love about this is that you got a flat tire, had a sore back after sleeping on the ground, sprained ankle and you were sad because you couldn't dance at a wedding. I love Nerdfighteria.
Nowhere is always somewhere to someone.
Love this.
That seems like a nice place to go and take a lot of pictures of with a very good camera.
I really love thoughts from places.
"I got as close to nowhere as I could get, and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time."
Hank, that's poetry.
One of my favorite things to do everyday is getting my cup of tea and snuggling up to the open window to watch the sun rise. When I watch it rise, I know no matter what happens that that day is going to be a good day.
Glad you got to watch the sunrise. However, I'm sad you A) almost threw up from pain and B) Didn't get to dance at the wedding. That would bum me out too.
this is beautiful. thanks, hank.
That is a beautiful sunrise
simply. fantastic.
Beautiful video Hank.
One of the few youtube channels that always ends with a deep thought : )
"I got as close to nowhere as I could get and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I have been in a long time" extremely beautiful words dude.
what a beautiful trip.
