Yes. I say yes, it was that good. 'Adult with a capital A', 'The whole family in the car' 'delivering me... home', where his earlier rambling never could. Reminiscing on, perhaps mourning, his carefree and fun younger days, into the ultimate realization of what he has created and become. And finding the new to be better (well, better is implied, but it's there!), his own family. This prose as poetry is French-a-llama good.

    • @ScrutesMaGlutes
      @ScrutesMaGlutes 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

that's an interesting point because the ocean line also implies that sense of regret and adventure but in a more poetic and beautiful way (at least in my opinion) but misses the whole family aspect and growth so should we rank lines based on their implications or their execution or is there some weird medium and if their is, is it subjective

i have no idea how, but for the last four years, I have had the tendency of watching old vlogbrothers videos while distracting myself from studying - from school back then to uni now. And I always end up watching this video and being completely blown away by it. i've probably seen it around 50 times. I'm old enough to drive now, I have a car, and my Semesterferien (there is no english equivalent for this beautiful, majestic word) begin next month... I think I need to convince my friends to take a road trip. (If we go west we end up in Amsterdam, which isn't too shabby.) - tl;dr: This video has accompanied me from ages fourteen to almost nineteen and i couldn't be happier about it.

estherrawr Ok, this may seem kinda stalkery but it's also kinda cool that I noticed your name from today's Esther Day video and the fact that I'm rewatching his thoughts from places videos as you were. I just had to say that.

John Green is a full time novelist. Even his thoughts about road trips (and all other thoughts from places videos) are simply beautiful as prose... If someone compiled all his ramblings and thoughts in these videos into a book, I would buy it.

The last time I watched this video, I was in a very different place. My life was so unstable, and nostalgia was a necessary tool in my arsenal for running away from reality when things were overwhelming. I was profoundly lonely, had only a tenuous connection to who I felt I was as an individual, and the only reason I didn't commit suicide was because my child depended on me. Being a parent wasn't something I enjoyed, it was an obligation that trapped me in an existence that, because of my child, I couldn't change or escape.
This video, at the time, felt like a "ha ha look what I have and you don't" and it made me so sad to watch it.
Since then, I have started seeing a psychiatrist, I've gotten married to my absolute best friend in the whole world, I've watched my daughter become a strong and kind and confident person, and I live in a house with my family instead of in a roach-infested apartment or a dorm or a room for rent... And this video, just now, became a beautiful reminder of how far I've come in the last few years, and how much I can appreciate about the adventurous route-to-comfort-and-normality I've been taking.
    Dang.

It's such a shock to see old videos. Sarah is no longer The Yeti, Henry is almost a teenager, and there are no more bunnies in the dooblydoo. It's not even called the dooblydoo anymore! The only constant is change

This has been one of my favorite Vlogbrothers videos for a long time. Before he deleted it, I saw John’s recent TikTok showing Henry and Alice and asking them what they liked about life. Seeing Henry as a fully formed young person instead of a toddler made me remember this video all over again. Though it may not be as outwardly obvious in 10 years of adulthood as it is in childhood, it was a nice reminder that I, too, have grown a lot.

John. This will be clumsily worded. I've been watching Vlogbrothers for a long while, but when I came across this video something changed. This is poetry to me... not even average poetry, but the sort that hoists you out of a dank malaise on dark mornings when nothing else can... I have no idea why, and I have no interest in sorting it out, because I don't need to. This strengthened my heart when you first posted it, and it does now. All I have to say is, very sincerely, thank you.

The thing is, if you're in a bad mood, maybe you're stuck in quarantine because it's summer 2020, if you watch one old vlogbrothers video it'll bring you a little happy nostalgic light. And THEN the real fun begins as you get recommended videos you'd long forgotten so that you can delight in reliving old happinesses for as long as you need. It's a great system, honestly.

I have made it all the way to this video on my Nerdfighter Pilgrimage, and I have not yet felt the urge to play a video twice. Upon watching today's video, I spontaneously pressed the replay button and listened to the whole thing again, savoring it. At the very end, I said the word "Home" aloud in perfect tandem with John.
It rather reminds me of the first time I read Harry Potter - how I just started over again, which I had never done for any book before, and the mix of nostalgia and enjoyment that came from rereading.
John, for continuing to inspire us and for, occasionally, rendering me as incomprehensibly whimsical as you -
    Thank you, and DFTBA.

So I gre up in Indianapolis and lived the entirety of my youth up until now. This semester marked my freshmen year at Flagler College in the beautiful St. Augustine FL. And while this place is absolute heaven in comparison to the somewhat dreary midwest, there is one thing that this place lacks: home. Unfortunately i can't just hop on a plane and go back home, considering my parents have also made the journey down here and now live in Jacksonville. Despite all of the antastic opportunities that this move has provided for us, it has come at quite a sacrifice. The ending of your video really spoke to me, and i really just wanted to say thank you for all you do.

Bonnie Howell just go back and watch their old videos, it'll help explain things. They've got playlists for each year on their channel. So John's wife is named Sarah, but she is referred to as the yeti because in '07 when they started up vlogbrothers, she told john she didn't want to be on camera, so john obliged, but noted that their would be brief notices and moments where she would be partially visible, yet never fully seen, and he mentioned how she was like a yeti, and so he's called her that ever since

John, I'm a recent nerd-fighter and I've just gotta say that after watching a grand total of 10 of your vlogs I'm totally hooked and want to watch them all! This might take a while... I also want to read all your books. :)

John, I read All the King's Men about five years ago and that quote has always stuck with me. I'm happy to hear it again.

This video has had a profound effect on me. Every time I return home from a trip, or even just a walk, or from a rough day at school, I think of returning to home, a place which is so familiar you don't need to remember it anymore, and how no matter where I've been or what I've done, this is the place that holds my heart.
    DFTBA.

I just discovered that you can look at your old comments on youtube (which is a little unsettling... the internet forgets nothing).
It did however tell me that this was the first vlogbrothers video I ever commented on. And wow! That doesnt suprise me at all because it is a wonderful video. One of my all time favourites. Thank you John for these words! Thank you for all the beautiful and interesting thoughts you have made me think over the years. I love this video even more than I did six years ago, I think :)

Only an author (or a person with a writer in them) could be so beautifully articulate. Brilliant, John!

When I am depressed or unhappy with life, I watch your Thoughts From Places and remember that whatever I am going through, there are much more important things. I can easily and truthfully say that these videos have often saved my life. And for that I thank you. More than you can ever know.
