Context for Il Yu Jin's "Subzero Sonata": it's a parody of famous Korean drama "Winter Sonata", it was so big in Japan it got anime adaptation and probably the one starting K-drama fever there. Even the theme music is very similar.
So fun thing for this series naming: "Like A Dragon" is a rough translation of "Ryū Ga Gotoku", the original name for the Yakuza games over in Japan. They are not called "Yakuza" for obvious reasons. But this game specifically started as a joke of making an RPG game of the beat them up series... Specially, an RPG game like the "Dragon Quest" series, it went so far to the point that the protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, is just addicted to that game series within the story. So, Yakuza Like A Dragon is not only pointing to the original name of the series, but it's also a "Yakuza" game, but "Like A Dragon" Quest game. I just find rambling about this very funny.

I know you guys didn’t bring it up, but the reason why the enemies had red eyes was because the new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, has a wild as hell imagination which causes him to envision life and battle like it was straight out of Dragon Quest. In the first three chapters of the game even, Ichiban uses his fists and his enemies are either Yakuza or desperate bums, fairly grounded in reality. The beginning of chapter 4, however, has him pick up a baseball bat that, with one of the party members snarking about it, he treats like a holy sword and he is a legendary hero. From there, the enemy literally transforms in his eyes to various monsters called Sujimon, staying human with wild designs. A normal man in a business suit, for example, can gain 100lb in weight and wield a giant sausage on a stick as a club. It’s just Ichiban too, everyone else is confused, but they roll with it cause he still fights hard Sujimon is also as subtle as a nuke, but they actually justify calling enemies that

Most of the Poundmates you get are from what they call Substories which are basically side quests that can be serious or bat shit insane. Like theres one in this game where you talk to a guy running a circus and you end up fighting a tiger, a bear and then the last one a monkey gets loose and highjacks an excavator with a front end scoop. Im being serious too 😂
Don’t forget the substory where you fight against a giant Roomba that steals your wallet. And the crazy thing is, you fight it again in Infinite Wealth, & this time it can fly!
I believe this game is a turn-based thing like Pokémon, Persona, and Final Fantasy. Very different from the action stuff you’ve guys have seen in this series where they beat people into bloody pulps. Some fans liked it, some didn’t. Still these summons are pretty cool. Especially the 2nd half where it pretty much was popular Yakuza characters throughout the series. Although I want to mention 2 particular ones. The one where the does, what Ken calls at least, “crazy fists” and that symbol he had behind him. Asura is celestial being in Hindu mythology that are considered enemies of the gods. Usually symbolize pride, power, and wrath. And the chicken one where Ichiban ate the egg on rice. And no Ken, that wasn’t Fried Rice. There’s a traditional Japanese Egg dish called “Tamago Kake Gohan” (literally translates to “Egg on Rice) where you eat raw egg on top of a fresh bowl of hot rice (mostly accompanied with some soy sauce 😋). That may sound iffy to eat for some people, but the idea is that you drop the egg on and rice and mix it around and the heat from the rice will cook the egg enough to eat. Some people bring up Salmonella when it comes to raw stuff, but Japanese eggs are carefully selected to prevent that sort of thing. Can’t say the same for western eggs though.
IIRC the Turn-based thing started as an April Fools thing after they announced "Like a Dragon" but people responded so positively, they decided "Okay that's it, rework the entire battle system!"

Yakuza is typically a male-dominated series because of the over the top violence, which the director wasn't comfortable being used on women. Kiryu himself refuses to ever strike a women as well. The reason 7 was brought up was actually due to the fact it was the first game to include playable female characters due to the series transitioning from a beat'em up into an RPG. If there isn't an All Essences video out there, I'll make one myself just so you can see these characters in action. Essence attacks are basically super moves that have animations similar to summons.
Ah, that makes sense with the violence aspect. Though there are plenty of females in fighting games, however that’s different style than this for sure. We will try to find essence attacks 🧐

Mentioning fighting games in particular leads to the Yakuza fanbase's biggest gripe: Kazuma Kiryu is one of the most requested/desired fighting game guest characters in recent memory. He is almost up there with "Sora getting into Smash Bros" level of hype. We're talking hundreds of thousands of people screaming in unison about how bad they want Kiryu in Street Fighter or Tekken or anywhere that'll take him. Hell some have even said Mortal Kombat, which is doubly hilarious considering his "no killing" background. That's just how desperate we are to see Kiryu hit the fighting game scene, we'll take anything at this point. The problem is that, again, Kiryu does not strike women. Because of this, RGG Studio has declared that he physically cannot be in fighting games, possibly ever. That being said, who knows what the future holds with our new protagonist Ichiban and our growing roster of female party members.

So, the idea for "Like A Dragon" to be an RPG parody was originally conceived as an April Fool's Day joke by the creator of the Yakuza franchise. But enough of the fanbase thought it was cool enough that they basically said, "Either we get the RPG Yakuza game, or we riot," and so they actually made the full-fledged game because why not. They even state that Ichiban simply imagined these since he is a big fan of the RPG genre as a whole.

Some of the summons are Heals and Buffs. Hence you don't see them doing anything because they don't cut to the combat to show what they did to the player and their party members.
There are a few badass female characters that turn up in the games but there are less of them since most stories focus on traditionally male-dominated Yakuza groups. As of the latest two games we’ve gotten playable women though, and they kick just as much ass as the gents!
Part of the reason there are very few female fighters in the Yakuza series is that the creators want to uphold Kiryu's strict policy of not hitting women. They feel so strongly about this, they have expressed reservations about even putting him in fighting games as a guest character because you might be able to make him fight a woman, and that would be out of character.
*Note* If/When you decide to play through the Yakuza series, you definitely don't want to do them all back to back unless you have a really good reason. I mean, you should start at 0 and move forward from there, but you should play other games in between. I know a lot of people put off the games because they think of doing them all at once but that is a whole lot of Yakuza! It's hard for anything to not get stale with that much to go through. Thankfully, the games are great at recapping anything from previous games if it is really relevant to the current storyline.
Honestly, the Yakuza games are probably ones you should watch the plot of. They are games that watching the plot would take 8 hours, playing the game takes 250 hours. Unless you play them off stream, then do that.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames If you ignored everything but the main plot, you could maybe do it in 20 hours. But the games have a ton of side stuff. The side stuff is maybe 90% of the game. You'll go to an arcade and there will be 4 different game cabinets. Those let you play 4 other games, start to finish in their entirety. There will be a collectible card game, with it's own plot and characters, with cards all over the entire game. The bowling alley, batting cages, and golf courses are fully functional. An entire real estate management simulation. I spent 3 hours on just the claw crane game in one of them. And dozens of people wandering around town with their own storylines. All that sort of stuff, and plenty more. And it's integrated, so doing one gives rewards to help in the others. They basically make the games so you don't finish it until the next one comes out.
Saejima the bald guy with green jacket is also playable Character in other Yakuza game not the 0 one also there more character like shun Akiyama tanimura and shinada (y'all could react to them if y'all want)
So freaking jarring hearing this in English when I'm so use to the Japanese voices, anyway you guys should also check out the ones from Yakuza 8 infinite wealth as well as all of the ultimate attacks from both that and like a Dragon.
The reaction was fun and all but I feel that you need to have played throught their substories in order to fully enjoy the experience. On their own it's just funny weird imagery but each one of these characters have a funny but heartwarming story to tell. So please play through the game, you won't regret it.
Sadly all the bad ass female characters don't come in until 6-8 there was one in Yakuza 2 but the writing team changed after 2 and she was written out of the series she doesn't come back until 8 Any other female characters in this series are either supporting characters or there to die Fun fact: 40% of the Yakuza fan base are female

Patriarchs are like generals or leaders of the yakuza. I think it was yakuza 2 had a matriarch however I don’t remember what happened to her. But yeah the yakuza is mainly men and honestly I’d rather not see a woman get beat up especially since pretty much every yakuza besides the main characters murder and get murdered like all the time
The creator has even rejected proposals for Kiryu, the main protagonist of the franchise, to appear as a guest character in fighting games such as Tekken and Smash Bros despite his popularity and people wanting him in these games. His reason is basically that he doesn't want to see Kiryu hitting women since Kiryu is supposed to be an honorable gentleman amongst the other yakuza members.
A reminder that all of this is in Ichiban’s head. Except for Majima. Majima 100% did that for real.

Watched this solely for the Gondawara summon.
Tbh all summons were great.
But I especially liked the crustacean one.
There are various badass female characters, although most of them are allies, you never get to fight any of them

Part of the reason there are very few female fighters in the Yakuza series is that the creators want to uphold Kiryu's strict policy of not hitting women. They feel so strongly about this, they have expressed reservations about even putting him in fighting games as a guest character because you might be able to make him fight a woman, and that would be out of character.
*Note* If/When you decide to play through the Yakuza series, you definitely don't want to do them all back to back unless you have a really good reason. I mean, you should start at 0 and move forward from there, but you should play other games in between. I know a lot of people put off the games because they think of doing them all at once but that is a whole lot of Yakuza! It's hard for anything to not get stale with that much to go through. Thankfully, the games are great at recapping anything from previous games if it is really relevant to the current storyline.

Honestly, the Yakuza games are probably ones you should watch the plot of. They are games that watching the plot would take 8 hours, playing the game takes 250 hours. Unless you play them off stream, then do that.
It would be off stream. But 250 hours is a lot haha. But we play AC Valhalla and that was like 90 hours. And just one game not multiple ones 🤔
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames If you ignored everything but the main plot, you could maybe do it in 20 hours. But the games have a ton of side stuff. The side stuff is maybe 90% of the game.
You'll go to an arcade and there will be 4 different game cabinets. Those let you play 4 other games, start to finish in their entirety.
There will be a collectible card game, with it's own plot and characters, with cards all over the entire game.
The bowling alley, batting cages, and golf courses are fully functional.
An entire real estate management simulation.
I spent 3 hours on just the claw crane game in one of them.
And dozens of people wandering around town with their own storylines.
All that sort of stuff, and plenty more. And it's integrated, so doing one gives rewards to help in the others. They basically make the games so you don't finish it until the next one comes out.

So freaking jarring hearing this in English when I'm so use to the Japanese voices, anyway you guys should also check out the ones from Yakuza 8 infinite wealth as well as all of the ultimate attacks from both that and like a Dragon.

The reaction was fun and all but I feel that you need to have played throught their substories in order to fully enjoy the experience. On their own it's just funny weird imagery but each one of these characters have a funny but heartwarming story to tell. So please play through the game, you won't regret it.

Sadly all the bad ass female characters don't come in until 6-8 there was one in Yakuza 2 but the writing team changed after 2 and she was written out of the series she doesn't come back until 8
Any other female characters in this series are either supporting characters or there to die

Patriarchs are like generals or leaders of the yakuza. I think it was yakuza 2 had a matriarch however I don’t remember what happened to her. But yeah the yakuza is mainly men and honestly I’d rather not see a woman get beat up especially since pretty much every yakuza besides the main characters murder and get murdered like all the time
The creator has even rejected proposals for Kiryu, the main protagonist of the franchise, to appear as a guest character in fighting games such as Tekken and Smash Bros despite his popularity and people wanting him in these games. His reason is basically that he doesn't want to see Kiryu hitting women since Kiryu is supposed to be an honorable gentleman amongst the other yakuza members.
The funny thing is that all of these dudes are friends you can make through side stories. 😂
