I am from England now living in NY , I used to go to Wimbledon Speedway to watch the racing every week .All the bikes were Jap ( no brakes no gears),always remember the smell of the Castrol R oil .Lot of world champs raced there ,good times back in the late 70s .Jeff NYC
When I was a young 16 year old in the UK, I used to ride to the Speedway Stadium to watch those crazy guys flying around the dirt track , sideways most of the time and with no brakes! The sound of those JAP engines and the smell of Castrol R, was intoxicating! Prestwick was a genius and it's great that you give him credit for his innovations!
Billy your a great inspiration to me and to all bike enthusiasts. I really appreciate the patience you have to explain something so technical sound to easy to understand. If you had a school of bike building i'd be first in line to enroll. Thank you for the great content.
I've been into vintage bikes since '78 . I never raced except at the drag strip. Love watching the board track racers at Wauseon and Davenport meets. Cool Hand Billy, never bluffs.
@@BillyLaneChoppers I actually live in Davenport been to every Blackhawk swap since 1974. Would love to see Smyrna looks like a good time. Davenport has petered out through the years. The racing was real nice in the 70s and 80s.

Great vid Billy, love engines, especially older ones ........love the technical side , have fixed replaced ect many motorbike engines mainly over the years and to see some one who REALLY understand and KNOWS what they talking about is a breath of fresh air. Internal control cables. Good idea. Seems we moved backwards on that. As a kid I made a bulb/battery for setting up points on mopeds. Raleigh. Puch. Tomos. Galleria. Used to buy them for a few quid. A Raleigh runabout with almost zero milage off a woman who's hubby died for £6. Worth a lot nowadays.
Excellent explanation of why we fire BTC and why we get "Knock" . The old Ford v8's liked to pre detonate (they run hot)--going up a couple jet sizes cure this. (off topic, but....)
Bro indian Larry would have geeked out to see this thing go. He was huge into the gizmos and whirly bits that made a motorcycle run and he hated the fact guys were trying to hide those things. I just subscribed and I miss seeing a bike builder who loves everything 2 wheels
Man! I like everything about that bike, those valve springs, the bronze carb, the color of the bike. I've seen a few JAP engines, but not up close.cool tip on the internal cable.
Prestwich was genius. It's because of him that the OHV Harley-Davidson Peashooter exists,. Because of the H-D Peashooter, the Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, EVO, & everything to follow exist.
COOL STUFF..never knew how an internal throttle cable twist grip throttle worked ...can you time by hearing..we used to time my old Mustang Mach 1 Cleveland by slowly turning the distrib...until it settled down smooth...
BILLY with respect there are 3 things needed for a motor to run spark ,fuel, and air , I love watch8ng you work I can tell the pleasure of teaching people the. Correct way . Have you ever considered being a teacher
I was, at one time, negotiating with Wyotech to teach at their facility in Daytona Beach, Florida. As much as I wanted to do it, Wyotech didn't offer me hardly enough to travel 180 round-trip miles daily to enrich it's program. I'm considering creating a program to teach veterans at no cost, but not yet in a position to do that. Agreed, oxygen rich air is a necessary component to combustion, which is why I mentioned the carburetor. The carburetor mixes air with the fuel (gasoline, in this case), generally at a ratio of 12:1 to 15:1. However, without compressing the air/fuel mixture, the combustion inside the engine would not suffice to move the piston or heavy flywheels below them. I mentioned compression for this reason, specifically because it is one of the definitive four strokes I discuss in the video. The intake stroke, by virtue of the carburetor, accepts the air/fuel mixture. Thank you for watching, and for the clarification.
@@BillyLaneChoppers I was once very wild until I was given a daughter and a son which changed my life for the best.. they're now 15 and 13 .. I'm glad I've put my life on hold and spent extra time with them because they are adults before you know it.. I live just south of davenport on the Illinois side..
Top speed depend on use. We have it geared to not exceed 60mph, but this is capable of about 100mph on pump gasoline. If I revert it back to methanol, probably 120mph- very fast for a single.
Hello Billy, great video! I notice the timing chain does not have any form of chain tensioner. My thoughts are why does my Harley Twin cam need to have cam chain tensioners with such a short run of chain? We all know the problems with HD Twin cam 88 tensioners and my thoughts are why not remove the tensioners with such a short run. I worked with chains for many years with much longer runs without tensioner and nary a problem with jumping and such. Seems to me that the tensioners could have been a noise reduction measure? Any thoughts?
J.A.P. did not use a chain tensioner. The magneto slides fore & aft on it's base, and I pull it rearward to increase tension. It's a crude way to do it, but it is a way to do it.
It looks like you added a shim between the base of the cylinder and top of the block. If this is correct, was it done so you could increase the stroke for more displacement?
Champion! Good enough for Cal Rayborn good enough for me and you! I have used them for 20 years of road racing. Never had an issue. And the stickers are timeless! Good work Bill, keep it up!

There is just something so alluring about those bikes .
The simplicity is extremely intricate.
Nice build !

What is seat pressure with those hairpin valve springs.....40 lbs?
Ever see a transmission continually fill up with the crank case oil?? (2000 88A w/95ci BB)
Do it the smart way not the hard way! 👍👍👍👍👍

Billy,
With those hairpins on the JAP, how are you testing them? Running a 250cc from ‘38 that’s in a Trumpy.
Cheers
This is a long track engine. JAP used the hairpins for added cooling, due to higher engine temps.

That's awesome
