Several years ago I had the opportunity to try out riding a Jawa speedway machine on a practice track east of Los Angeles. It was absolutely crazy and a miracle that I didn't crash or kill myself. You must have total respect for the machine, because it does not care what you think. You can only hop on and learn its way on the track if you want any chance of doing well. Many thanks! :)
This reminds me of when I was a freshman in high school and a friend, who was writing a story for the school paper about Bruce Penhall, dragged me with him to the Orange County fairgrounds one night, where Penhall was racing. I'm glad he did! I knew nothing about speedway racing, but I was mesmerized by the spectacle. My most vivid recollection is not of anything visible, but of the pungent smell of burnt oil. I'm not surprised to see the engine has total-loss oiling...
My childhood, the 4 valve came out in 76. Westlake had had one for a couple of years and Jawa were desperate to get their version out. Spent many hours at Brandon (Coventry) inhaling the exhaust fumes.
Over here in NZ I have had the pleasure of meeting Ivan Mauger, I took his gold plated Jawa to a show, along with Darryl Holden's Isle of Man winning ducati, great day!!
When I started riding, I rode a two valve Jawa but soon I was being passed by guys running 4 valve conversions, Weslakes and OHC Jawas. I got a Weslake and was back in action. Seemed to me at the time, the Jawa was fast but needed a particular riding style as it wasn't as flexible as the Weslake. I'd say the Weslake had a broader spread of power and that suited my riding style. Nice bike. Brings back memories.
I had a very 2nd hand one about 30 yrs ago. Really nice engine - good spinny power but unfortunately it had magneto gremlins & 2 very slightly bent valves. When it went well I found I progressed better than ever but had become dis-heartened by the time I got its reliability sorted. Bought a Weslake & went backwards - found them to be a very "drivy" natured engine. Horses for courses I guess.
Light, stone-ax simple, and fast. In my youth I attended an Inter-Am motocross race and immediately went out and bought a 1970 CZ 250 MX. I ate a lot of dirt, nearly went deaf from the expansion chamber exhaust, never had so much fun. I still yearn for the smell of burning castor oil. Jawa rules.
I too owned a Jawa CZ back in the early '60's (Australia) I cant remember the cc though. The wiring on them was an utter nightmare I remember cursing it well along with many others who tried to sort it.
I think that DT-500 was amazing in tune, for a total loss I would have expected more haze @ the exhaust...In action speedway is utter adrenaline...and I'm only watching.
Wow nice bike. I love nearly all the jawa bikes I think the only one I dislike was the jawa Czech 175 from the late 70s. That one was not so pretty. I would love a jawa 2 valve to put in a cafe racer. Thanks guys
I tried running my 250cc Bultaco crosser on methanol that made it very flexible,no faster ,took longer to warm up and needed a very large main jet!Oh and expensive !
Dirt flat track AMA bikes use no brakes either but achieve higher speeds with a bigger bike that's heavier . I still love this bike though & I think the later models that changed the jug angle forward more & were running Nitro methane later on ? I have watched these same bikes used in ice racing with ice picks & guards on them & that is also insane . The way these bikes were built in ways were reminiscent of the early board track racers in ways by looking at them . Beautiful bike no cookie cutter crap here at all !
I recently repaired a single cam 350 and the engine was mostly very similar inside to this engine . started engine and the smell of methanol and castor , how I miss riding them . Why do you not use oil from the frame ?

Do you mean Robert Holden?
I used to go to Halifax speedway in the 70s. Ivan Mauger was a great rider!

Glad you liked the Weslake, worked as an inspector on them at the Rye Harbour factory.
I had a DT500 from almost new, one of the best speedway bikes at that time.

Really nice example! Always wanted to ride a speedway bike. Closest I ever came was weekly short tracking a Bultaco 360 Astro.
ty for sharing a beautiful bike, so interesting..😍👍

Bomba, naša pýcha, nech Vám robí radosť
I told during the video, that when I was young, my father had a Jawa CZ 175.
I too owned a Jawa CZ back in the early '60's (Australia) I cant remember the cc though. The wiring on them was an utter nightmare I remember cursing it well along with many others who tried to sort it.

😍👍RZECZYWIŚCIE... kule do ściany.
Beautiful looking machine...and sounds great too...
I allways remember in 1974 the superb CZ 250 Jeroslav Falta Réplica !! it was not a speedway bike but motocross...a rocket !!!
Looks and sounds so sweet, love it.
Fantastic video. Thankyou!
Dziękuję bardzo za materiał.
Szkoda że jesteście w maskach.

What a beautiful bike up the Ace's ♣️🏁
Awesome sounds amazing I have a Jawa 897
Java, i was a child in a comunist country... 40 years ago... What a sound... Smell... The riders...
Pekná skladačka. Z modelu 895 je na nej len motor. Ale aspoň aj po tých rokoch žije.
In the colours and emblem of Belle Vue Speedway, Manchester UK. "Up the Aces!'
I love Jawa because is so nice bike!
What is it about speedway? No one knows anything about the bikes, its all about the rider !
Beautiful motorcycle ... that near the exhaust passes the oil pipe I mean the first, the speedway
brilliant job! awesome video... love the music... pistons or Hammond...
Speedway: Because brakes are for cowards!

@@sergueimac7294 yeah, mee too!
Tommy Jansson crashed on his jawa in 1970 and died and they have fixed up the bike so it looks great
good one loverly bike
Lovely bike..did jawa ever use a speedway engine in a road bike???.
Beautiful just the same as mine
I recently repaired a single cam 350 and the engine was mostly very similar inside to this engine . started engine and the smell of methanol and castor , how I miss riding them . Why do you not use oil from the frame ?
coooool!!!!
🤘😎
I can almost smell it!
was für ein Sound....Musik in den Ohren.
I don't understand why speedway is not popular at all in Spain :- \
You start it by flipping the wheel? Well, don't that beat all?
Where does the total loss oil go? Burned in the exhaust? Or maybe stored in a catch can?
empty oil bottle on the right hand side of the bike.
👌👍😍😎
Why is Jawa the best motor for Speedway??
But because in Czechoslovakia we had a speedway as a national sport. I watched it every Sunday. That's why engineers put a lot of care on these bikes.
@@jawatino3797 Speedway racing worldwide is still dominated by JAWA, for MANY decades now.. quite impressive.
A kde je zmínka o Simandlově Esu,který Jawa znárodnila-t.j. ukradla.Vyráběl i silniční a terénní stroje.
No breaks
Do the Belle Vue Aces still exist?!
Yes they do. :-) bellevue-speedway.com/
Yes their still alive and kicking and have a wonderful stadium and the best track again in the UK.
They are the current British premier league champions .
Speedway racing
Un vrai bike c',est ca
Jawas were nothing compared to a Weslake
Why the face mask?
オイルホースの場所此じゃ焦げるでしょ❗
バイクは良いのに😢
日本のオートレスの車両そっくりです、ダート、又はフラットトラックで走るのでしょう🎵
