  • Still a lot of work left to do, but we can finally bolt the supercharger onto the engine in this episode! There are ups and downs and more parts on order, because things never work out the way you planned.
    I'm not sure I'd say the supercharger is “installed” at the end of this episode, but it can be bolted on and test-fit, at least. There are still a lot of small jobs and a few relatively big ones before we can start thing thing up, though!
    Timeline of filming: December 15th, 2017 - December 19th, 2017
    Song List (Order of First Appearance):
    0:01 Southern California - Riot
    6:47 Highway Girl - Riot
    13:03 Lone Trail - Silent Partner
    18:15 Hounds - Silent Partner

    Awesome vid. I am a veteran machinist and do my share of auto mechanics as well.
    In the machining realm, I usually set myself up for a failure at least once a year when I haven't measured all the bits and bobs as an assembly and have trusted my brain sack calculator to "make sure" all my parts will be machined correctly.
    Such is life.

    The front dampener should be balanced with all the other engine parts; that's what all those holes are drilled in it! Good luck!

    Young man, I came across your site as one does when idly trolling through all things engine connected and I like your presentations and explanations immensely...... loved your rebuild of the Chevy engine for your Blazer. At least you own up to your fuck ups! Bet you are a lot less like a bull in a china shop next time you assemble anything. I build custom PC's and always dry fit and measure twice and cut once.... the last full engine rebuild I did was in 1974 when I rebuilt my Ford 4 cylinder engine when it started burning almost as much oil as petrol. I currently run a V8 diesel Porsche Cayenne and about the only maintenance you can do on modern vehicles is check the oil levels and top off your tyre pressures. Oh how I miss tinkering with points and timing and diagnosing worn valve guides and such like! By the way, I am a 63 yr old chap from the county of Angus in Scotland. Ah, the power of he internet!

    When installing the sbc balancer, if you heat it up in the oven at 275-300 degrees, it slides right on the crank with oven mitts on. It will not hurt the rubber elastomer bond either. Many of the older sbc’s didn’t even have a bolt in the crank

    Another awesome vid! I was a gen mechanic in the military years ago and I think faster means lower charging amperage but higher voltage. I could be mistaken, been a while lol. I vaguely remember lower speed meant higher charging amps at a lower voltage. I might need a refresher course here ;-) But the regulator is supposed to maintain around 12-14 volts DC. The less charge your battery needs, the higher the voltage will go and visa versa. Again... Might be mistaken.

    I don't use the front and back rubber intake gaskets I lay a thick layer of copper gold RTV extended up and under the intake runner gaskets. Set the intake in place as steadily as possible letting the RTV gush! However I will lay RTV over thin blue OEM type runner gaskets, but not Mr. Gasket Ultra Seal or equivalent clean and coat the intake bolts with permatex torq to specs! Using this method I've never had a single problem.

    Cool car, cool project, I enjoyed the videos so far. That being said, I would have spent the supercharger money on a 454. A 454 with a mild aftermarket cam will make 500 ft lbs of torque no problem. The 144 will wake up the 350 to an extent, but you will need an aftermarket cam and heads to really take advantage of it. I have a bad feeling that you will be disappointed...

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Completely fair. The advantage here is that I might be able to keep the transmission and rear end (because I'm cheap), and forced induction (even with a mini blower) is something I've always wanted to check out. It won't blow anybody's doors off, but I think I'll be happy with just a bit more get-up-and-go than it had before. It made a good impression on me when I drove it briefly (spoilers), for now I think I'll be satisfied. But it wouldn't be off the table to put a 454 in the Firebird and the supercharger in my S10 Blazer, either...

    As a frequent wrench turner, I'm ashamed to admit I just learned something about the RTV silicone recently. I didn't see you do it with the intake manifold (maybe it was edited out), but the instructions say to set the part in place lightly, then let the silicone dry, then tighten it down. That way it forms the gasket rather than smashing it out when you tighten it down while it's wet.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I say it now and then (something like "then I'll let it skin over for a few minutes") but maybe I haven't been clear enough about that. Ideally you'd put RTV on one of your surfaces, let it start to cure a bit (maybe 5-10 minutes), put the pieces together finger tight, wait maybe half an hour, tighten them down more, then wait an hour or two and torque them down all the way. I believe that is the "proper" way to do things, but it is a bit time consuming to do for some parts. I will do that when I can, especially for something like an intake seal.

    Try a shorty water pump and a longer crank adapter for the blower pulley , and next time you change a intake remove the valve covers they are just in the way , And when removing the distributor remove the cap and note the location of the rotor Number at tdc is the way to do it !

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A short water pump would be moving the pulley in the wrong direction, and as far as I can tell nobody makes a longer crank adapter short of having one custom machined. I did eventually find a different lower drive pulley that might have worked but it is over $300. I don't like removing the valve covers if I don't have to when doing an intake, just gives more opportunity for the gasket bits and dirt to get in there when cleaning things up.
      Good tip about marking the distributor location, I'm pretty sure I mentioned that I wasn't doing it because I would be turning the crankshaft before reassembling it anyway, though.

  • @aaronrad
    @aaronrad 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm wondering if the smaller balancer is off a 400. Or if it's a 400 crank. Is it possible your motor is a stroker? Back in the day we use to put a 400 crank in and have the 350 rods machined to fit the bigger 400 journal. Tada. 383...

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure it isn't a stroker, but I wish I paid more attention to checking when I had the oil pan off. Plus, since 400s are externally balanced, it's pretty obvious on the factory balancers which is which. If it shakes, rattles and rolls with this balancer though, I'll just put the old one back on.

  • @Eremon1
    @Eremon1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm certainly no expert but isn't it easier to put the intake manifold in before putting the valve covers on? I assume it's a "which ever way works for you kinda thing". The Do Not Bend package folded into your mailbox was funny. Sorry I took humor in that.
    Love all your videos. I have a big old soft spot for GMs. Especially the older ones with some soul. GMs have a lot of their quirks, but I still love them all.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like keeping the valve covers on to keep junk from getting under them when cleaning things up, and you can get away with leaving them tight with some manifolds but not this new one. So no big deal, didn't need to bother removing them entirely (the wires on the passenger side and spark plug wire guides on both sides make it a bit tricky) and just loosened them up. Entirely valid to just put the valve covers on after doing an intake manifold job though!

      The crankshaft supercharger pulley? Not sure what episode, but I checked it with a dial indicator and managed to get it pretty darn centered. Probably more centered than just installing it without spacers and not checking at all since the fit isn't the tightest. Rechecked it a hundred miles later and no change in position, I wouldn't expect it to be an issue.

      Short water pump was only on certain trucks that late, I think, it was only on cars for a few years. This is a long water pump, and the long nose model of the supercharger, so they are supposed to fit together. Turned out the water pump wasn't really the problem, anyway.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The instructions specifically state the long nose version (which it is) is made to fit a long water pump 2 or 3 v-belt setup. Anyway, the actual pulley problem was that the supercharger drive pulley didn't line up, which wouldn't have made a difference on either water pump setup. It was a tricky situation all around.

    That smaller balancer with the 12 o’clock timing marks is from a 305 from a later vehicle. Could be a truck or a Camaro balancer but it’s definitely from a 305. I’ve had to kneel on the rad support to set timing on TONS of GM 5.0’s are you sure that engine is a 350 and not a 305?

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, I can't be completely sure it is a 350 without measuring the stroke. Block casting number is 3970010 and it is a 2 bolt main and that could also apply to 327 engines from 1969, so there is a very slim possibility it could have a 327 crankshaft but it is far, far more likely it is just a common 350 setup.

    15-40 diesel oil is king on old flat tappet engines

  • @mpikas
    @mpikas 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What vintage is the engine? The smaller balancer is an '80's 305/350 balancer, the larger one is a 70's one. Since it's been rebuilt, likely multiple times since it's .060" over, the timing cover could be off of anything so the mark matching or not doesn't mean much. If I was going to bet, random 350 was probably pulled out of an '80's truck in a jy, proabaly the most common source.

    • @mpikas
      @mpikas 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, the small crank pulley is an '80's crank pulley, it's looking a lot like the whole thing is an '80's 350 with the wrong timing cover on it.
      Pulleys can be infuriating when you get into these weird installs... I'm not sure why it's so hard, it's not like there were more than half a dozen factory configurations that just got re-rolled for the different chassis/accessories. I have a weird combination of 80's small block, some 70's parts and a 2000's PS type II PS pump with some 2000's S10 and f-body parts and a bunch of stuff that I custom machined to make it all work. One thing that would likely make this all easier for you would be to use a 3rd gen f-body ('82-87) alternator bracket, an '86 or 87 formula/TA alternator (or later) rated at 145A and a, early 3rd gen alternator pulley (your stock one would likely work, the '87 pulley is a 6 rib not v-belt). I'm wondering if you're missing a spacer for the supercharger crank pulley or something since your original bolts were too long?
      Don't coat the intake gaskets with RTV, it just causes them to slide around and leak, especially the end seals. The best deal there is to put a small bead around the coolant passages at either end, ditch the end seals and run about a 1/4" bead on both "china walls" and bolt it down. Wait, yea, you just did it like that ;-) ... why did you goop it all down the first time?

  • @brucehardy1640
    @brucehardy1640 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey just came across your video. On your water pump to pulley issue, you might want to determine if the pulley set is made for a short water pump. By the looks of it you have the long water pump. That might be why you need the spacer to get every thing to line up.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was something I considered too, but the way it works out in the end the water pump actually has nothing to do with it, the crank pulley is the one that doesn't line up. The kit claims to fit short and long water pump setups, and it would have if the crankshaft pulley spacing lined up
