I'm waiting for this black Friday to start after that, I'm gonna snag myself Steam Deck LCD or OLED Deck. I saved up 400 bucks and I already have so many games piled up on my Steam account. Can't wait to play WWE 2k24, Tomb Raider 1-3 remastered, and so on!
It's crazy because Sony users have been saying this for years the Xbox controller is ancient and needs are overhauled bad... I think Xbox has been holding back the mainstream of gyro because their controllers are so popular, but none of them have any features that Sony Nintendo or any of the third party brands have...
I got it a week ago too and first I was blown away by the size it’s big and Games like rdr2 and hogwarts runs in ultra graphics 30 fps constant with proton on no issue smooth. The controller and the whole device is so good on hand.
Very clear and concise review, keep up the good work man. Currently waiting on a replacement being sent. I picked one up on the last day of the recent sale, but unfortunately got a faulty unit that kept crashing every few minutes. Can't wait to dig in, it was such a fun tease.
I was not a pc gamer but bringing your games on your travels and not having the trouble of setting up a console in a busy home change my habits forever.
I got mine for $200 because someone upgraded to a OLED... So, you can get a Steam deck cheep. And they have NO issues playing AAA games, it might have a hard time playing games that have Crap Coding because some developers LOOK for that nVidia instruction set (because nVidia has been know to sponsor gaming companies and forcing them to use THEIR instructions) instead of writing Good Code... But it plays NICE...I've been playing All 3 Modern Tomb Raider games and it looks SO GOOD... I've tried a few other "AAA" games and looked at the code, it's Intentional, so stop buying games that are Badly Coded... If Crysis 1, 2, and 3 can look SO GOOD that you feel like you're there, why do modern games act like "it can't be done" ...? ... because they get a Pay Bump to force you to buy that New Nvidia Card (usually for no damn reason...)
I have a decently powerful PC but I have found myself playing less and less games. Mostly sticking with older games in my library and emulation, so I have been thinking on getting a deck for gaming and just upgrade my PC for work purposes and the occasional AAA ,with a fairly decent gpu like a 7600XT.
Got emudeck set up day one on my deck I thought I knew it all. Hell little did I know this device can almost handle all you can throw at it if your willing to put in the work. Coming from console it's a great feeling to be able to run RDR2 with mods and then go play breath of the wild on the same device.
had my steam deck oled since it released, i order an lcd then a week later the oled was released. So i returned my lcd and got the oled and i loved the device. It is not powerful but it is enough for most of my games i have backlogged on my steam account. It is nifty
I couldn't make up my mind. I got the steam deck and the rog Ally Ally is better. Steam is easier to use but ultimately I think handheld gaming is fire. Especially if you're a dad or you just can't sit in front of a TV much.
Very good review, no fanboyism, you made relevent points for the pros and cons of the device and also recommended some games i didn't know about. Thank you!
I did not own a pc but wanted to play indie games that weren't on console and maybe some older games . I really like my steam deck it hits the right spot and i got the OLED for a great price .
I agree that technology isn't there yet, but I feel that the ROG Ally X is a great handheld for the price. The 24 gigs of memory and the battery upgrade is amazing. I'm not much of an AAA gamer and prefer more simple games and emulation. I also installed Bezzite, which gives me that Steam OS experience. As someone who has owned all of the devices at some point (Rog Ally, first-gen Steam Deck, Steam Deck OLED, and the Legion Go), I feel the ROG Ally is the best device if you exclude the price. The only device I own at the moment is a ROG Ally X because I lost all my devices in an apartment fire near the beginning of the year and had to start over. I put my test in this product. Now, if you are on a budget and want a screen that will blow you away, the Steam Deck OLED is the way to go. It just really depends on your preferences. If people want more information on any of the devices, feel free to ask, and I will provide my own opinion.
What about games that are just better with a mouse like strategy games? Ignoring price, do you miss the track pads or is the extra power worth it with a mouse to stick emulation? I'm looking to play Mechabellum and I currently only have consoles.
@@SPBTooL Actually, I feel you should be able to play this game on the Rog Ally. I will take a look at it here in a bit and see. Since the rog ally would give you the option to be in desktop or controller mode through the Armory Crate interface, I feel if it didn't work under the Standard controller selection, it would still work under the "Desktop" mode. If you are playing it on console, it should work on the Rog Ally in "Controller" mode like it would with a standard Xbox or PlayStation controller. .
Steam deck is fantastic. Plays most games great, and the OLED version is AMAZING for streaming from pc, or over the cloud. The WiFi 6, and the new screen really make streaming games a pleasure. Gotta have good internet of course, but if you do, you’re golden. Even Xbox cloud gaming has almost imperceptible lag now, with a good connection. Amazing 🤩
Great review! Only point of disagreement is that I would absolutely recommend the deck to someone considering swapping over to PC gaming. With the cost of parts right now. Windows based handhelds like you mentioned are terrible for pick up and play. Plus they require so much set up. The deck allows new people to pc gaming to build their steam library and take advantage of the various sales. Plus it’s not a bad device to use video out and play on a monitor. Of course they will need to respect the hardware and manage their expectations as to what games they will be able to run.
I have a dual screen oled gaming laptop and I still use my lcd deck.. in fact I havent used my laptop for gaming since I got my deck and it runs the games just as smooth you just need to utilize its optimize and ai functions
One benefit of the Deck over the Ally is... not having Windows. Windows is an OS designed for desktops, and while the laptop support is present, it's not the best. Linux, on the flip side, just sips power and only uses what is needed. The other thing is it isn't in your face about it, so honestly, it's maybe one of the best experiences to give Linux a try with. Don't want to deal with KDE or consoles? Don't touch desktop mode. Simple as that.
Gpd win mini with bazzite/windows dual boot is the way to go. But bazzite (steamos clone) and windows will run great on any of these handhelds so don’t let that be the deciding factor for you.
The Steam Deck is a very good system and i love mine, but the thing is that the Ally X also uses a 2280 NVMe which you can expand it to 4TB and one thing i would from there is partition 500gb for Windows and 500gb for Bazzite and 3tb for games which is like the Steam Deck OS which of course not many people would be willing to test out for their video. Would like to also mention that for the Ally X you could force bump down the resolution for certain games to 720p since most people wouldn't even notice it and for Bazzite i am using that on my mini PC right now which uses a Ryzen 9 6900HX and rocking a Radeon 680M which is about 15% to 20% weaker than the Ally X but with Bazzite installed on my mini PC at 1080p i get about 9% more performance over the steam deck because the CPU side is more powerful and the GPU side is slightly more powerful and not to mention i am using 32gb of memory in my mini PC over the 16gb on the steam deck so with Bazzite on the Ally X would dish out even more performance. Also, would like to mention that i am not bashing on the steam deck because i do love mine still and still use it from time to time but with a lot of the recent news as well about how the Ally X could be getting an official steam deck OS could make people want to dual boot their Ally X for windows and SteamOS and right now for people that wants a taste of it can just use Bazzite and also a 4tb NVMe Gen4 is only like $200so spending like a grand in total is worth it since you're getting 4 times the storage and if you do a partition like i mentioned that all your steam games are installed on the 3TB partition would work on both Windows and Bazzite since on my mini i have a 1tb NVMe that is partitioned for 500gb Windows 500gb Bazzite and i have a 2tb SSD installed with all of my games which i can play them both between Windows and Bazzite. P.S. i would have recommended both Nexomon games instead of Coromon and also should let people know to go for the 1tb model of the steam deck if they want to play games like Titanfall 2 and any other triple A titles since also Kingdom Hearts 1.5/2.5 and Kingdom Hearts 3 aren't exactly small games both of those being 66gb and 70gb which yes you can slap in a SD card but when testing out Kingdom Hearts 3 on a SD card the load times is pretty slow which i don't think people would want to wait over a minute for loading times.
I have a steam deck lcd and I recently got a legion go. Deck is fantastic, the UI is the best. Runs almost all games which you throw at it, but the screen in the lcd is not that good. So instead of getting an OLED, I got the legion go. The screen is way better but the UI sucks. But I love both of them. And docking is better in the deck. When docking the legion go, it gets confused and the orientation on the display is tilted and everytime you will need to change the setting to get it right and is a headache.
Yeah, that's one of the things I've noticed about the Ally as well. Docking experience is kind of lacking.. I got the steam deck and the rog Ally and there are big differences but both are capable devices. Ally is just a tad bit stronger and more finicky if you want to play on a TV
It be nice if the Steam Deck 2 or any Steam Deck in future could run windows.exe files and games Instead of downloading a lot of programs like Bottles and Lutris
I'm sorry, but Steam Deck is the best device to get into PC gaming. It's setup is too simple and most console to PC players are not up to all the swizzling needed to get Ally X working.
just got my Asus ROG ally z1 extreme that I got on 30% promo, I like first person shooter, hitman, COD, battlefield, Sniper etc., steam deck is not for me even though it's fancier than the ROG ally but I care about the specs more
I myself owna LCD and OLED, both are 500 modes but kind wish i ahd gone with 1TB so I didnt have to change the memory and dar cance i am openign not with ymy eye issue. I think the hand held si great for normal people fi you want hgih end then get PC these other one are way to much fot so little.
What?! No. Do not buy the Ally X. It's a waste of money. Just go for the steam deck. My friend started with the Ally and sold it after a week because we both liked my Steam Deck more. Especially when you are a console gamer... Windows suck.
Yeah. The steam deck can play that on medium to lower settings at a near constant 60FPS frame rate. Keep in mind when using handhelds the lower and medium settings look fantastic on the smaller screens.
I am adding Middle-Earth: Shadow of War to your list. If you like Mad Max, and Batman Arkham Night, you will love Shadow of Mordor. The Nemesis system is something I wish more games copied. The combat is also amazing.
I’ve had an ally for 10 months now.. amazing experience. However, once companies start making games not compatible for Linux, is what’s making me look elsewhere. GTA online is no longer playable, and I feel absolutely robbed. It’s not valves fault, but I’m afraid it’s going to be a domino effect for other games. We can’t play call of duty, battlefield, GTA online.. all because of anti cheats.
Buy a Deck... I would rather invest in a Company that CLEARLY cares about it's Gamers
Agreed.

I saved up 400 bucks and I already have so many games piled up on my Steam account.

Steam Deck made me realise I simply cannot do without back buttons, trackpads and gyro now. It makes my Xbox controller feel prehistoric.
I can't bear using controller and lift my right thumb away from stick to press action buttons.
4 back buttons solved my problem completely.

I sold my ROG Ally for a Steam Deck. 1. For the battery life. 2. For the Quick resume. Not looking back. The Oled is a great choice for a portable.
I change my ROG ally battery now I have a 72WH battery
@@atmphil1sell your rog bro it’s
Pure shit 💯
The steam deck is great I’ll you need to play bulgars gate 3
I have both and rog ally extreme is far better specially with AAA games
Had my oled deck for 3 weeks now . One of the best gaming gadgets I've ever bought. It's pretty incredible looking forward to taking it on vacations
I got it a week ago too and first I was blown away by the size it’s big and Games like rdr2 and hogwarts runs in ultra graphics 30 fps constant with proton on no issue smooth. The controller and the whole device is so good on hand.
@cristianomessi3339 awesome 👌 enjoy bro 👌. Rdr2 is absolutely gorgeous on it . I'm playing cyberpunk at 45fps fixed medium settings
Been gaming since atari 2600 in 1982 ,my gamimg history is now divided into two categories. Pre steam deck and post steam deck ,i love this thing
Very clear and concise review, keep up the good work man. Currently waiting on a replacement being sent. I picked one up on the last day of the recent sale, but unfortunately got a faulty unit that kept crashing every few minutes. Can't wait to dig in, it was such a fun tease.

I bought a SD OLED about 2 months ago so I could play American Truck simulator, I play it docked to my tv.👍
