Cozy MUST be #1! I know you were doing this based on voting, but I was still surprised not to see Tommy Aldridge or Carmine Appice even in the HM's. Can we get your personal top 10 Ruthless Metal?
I can agree to this list. Maybe you can do a list of most underrated drummer Charlie Benannte Tom Hunting Sted Howland Aquilles Priester Donald Tardy Mick Harris . . .
Good list. Deen Castronovo’s work on Wild Dogs’ Reign of Terror, and Cacophony’s Go Off! is some of the best metal drumming ever and inspired a bunch on the list. Bobby Jarzombek should be much higher. Mark Zonder is super underrated and probably only two guys on that entire list could play or write his parts.
Does not surprise me one bit that Cozy Powell was doing power metal drumming since Rainbow laid down the foundation for power metal/symphonic metal. Cozy's drum Intro on Stargazer is absolutely phenomenal
Gene Hoglan is already included ,but Sean Reinert`s work (RIP) on Death`s album "Human (1991) was/is totally mind-blowing, even today by the standards of technical death-metal drumming. (incredible that no one handed him the Noble prize for that work afterwards) 🔥🔥🔥
Quite hard to pick only 10. As a very, very humble drummer myself I love so many of them. But Mario Duplantier, Vinnie Paul and Aquiles Priester would definitely be in my top 10. Charlie Benante, Bobby Jarzombek, Igo Cavalera and Vinnie Appice easily in the 20.
My favorite Metal drummers are: Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel, Terrorizer) Charlie Benate (Anthrax, S.O.D.) Tom Hunting (Exodus) Ventor (Kreator) Igor Cavalera (Sepultura, Cavalera Conspiracy) Reed St. Mark (Celtic Frost) Just to name a few 🤘🤘🤘
I seriously think Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy should get an honourable mention. His jazz fusion influenced death metal drumming is incredible in my opinion🤘
Surprised there's no Mangini on this list - it might just be because he's very much a drummer's drummer but i feel like he deserves a spot here. Charlie Benante as well - he's an incredible drummer and I feel like he never gets the credit he deserves.
This is a good list. I can mention other worthy drummers that I think are worthy of mention that aren't in the honorable mentions: Ingo Schwichtenberg, Thomen Stauch, Scott Columbus, Dave Mackintosh, Jorg Michael, Tim Yeung, Paul Mazurkiewicz, George Kollias, Daniel Erlandsson, Jaska Raatikainen, Scott Rockenfield, Raymond Herrera, Jason Rullo.
Bill Ward's drumming on the first six Black Sabbath albums is essential listening. Special mention goes to Jimmy Economou for his work with Buffalo, in particular the album Volcanic Rock from 1973. Phil Taylor and Mickey Dee were not friendly like Lemmy, but I got Phil's signature 3 times and Mickey's once.
Great list, until #30 haha. Gene Hoglan deserves that spot for sure. Just a few of my Honorable M's Kirk Arrington-Metal Church(Kirk would make my TOP 10) the rest below in no order Rick Allen-Def Leppard (Their 1st two albums) Lee Kundrat, Robert Falck-Overkill Nigel Glockler-Saxon Steve Walcholz-Savatage Gonzo Sandoval-Armored Saint Stefan Kaufmann-Accept
Rush's only drummer gor like 40 years was the late Neil Peart. He also said he wasn't a drummer BUT a percussionist. Not egotistical, extremely bright and talented. Simply a down to earth guy from eastern Canada who has been described as 1 of the FEW, BEST rock drummers in the world...
Great list! I would recommend people check out Robb Reiner from Anvil. His style is a unique cross of heavy metal and big band jazz. His double bass is second to none and he has hands that would scare Buddy Rich!
My 10 favorite heavy metal drummers (in no particular order)... 1. Alex Van Halen (Van Halen) 2. Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Blue Murder, King Kobra) 3. Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio) 4. Tommy Aldridge (Black Oak Arkansas, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake) 5. John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) 6. Les Binks (Judas Priest) 7. Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) 8. Vinnie Paul (Pantera) 9. A.J. Pero (Twisted Sister) 10. "Wild" Mick Brown (Dokken)
@@robertdefex3439 he made it popular amongst the metal that came after. As far as I know Alex did it only in 1 song and it sounded nothing like the way Vinne incorporated it.
My list. In no particular order. 1. Tommy Aldridge 2. Nicko McBrain 3. Bobby Jarzombek 4. Mark Zonder 5. Mike Portnoy 6. Vinnie Paul 7. Mikkey Dee 8. Charlie Benante 9. Deen Castronovo 10. Neil Peart
I'm pleasantly surprised by the ranking of Mikkey Dee. I didn't vote for him, coz he's not one of those "classic" drummers, but he's the one whose solos never make me bored. And an all around top bloke. 👍
His groundbreaking work on for King Diamond albums is reason enough, add to that his part of Motorhead with somewhat simplified approach but he might be on of the most solid and consistend drummmers out there, I think...
If it's all about speed, then extreme metal drummers are the best. But to me, it's not how fast you are, but WHAT do you choose do beat. And from that point of view there is a clear winner, Mark Zonder. The guy who can keep the beat AND play a part, he makes all the songs much more interesting because it's never simple to follow, even a 2/4 or 4/4.
Really glad to see Cozy Powell on this list. He was a hard hitting beast like John Bonham and Bill Ward. A lot of modern drummers are more interested in speed than power, but the power was what separated hard rock and metal from pop and glam.
Right on Uncanny Valley. Power is what makes metal drummers amazing. Clive Burr had tremendous power, which is why I was so bummed when Maiden let him go. Nicko is a terrific drummer, but I miss Clive's power. RiP Clive.
I'm surprised that Ventor from Kreator didn't get mentioned, probably because a lot of people don't know his real name, Jürgen Reil, and he was way ahead of a lot of other drummers back in '83. Also surprised that C.O.C.'s Reed Mullin didn't make the top 30, another killer influential drummer.
Ventor is there in the top 30. Though it's true that on English speaking territories they often don't recognize German artists as much as they should be.
Away - Voivod Scott Rockenfield Steve Wachholz - Savatage Trym Torson - Enslaved Lasse Pelkkonen -Skepticism Giuseppe Orlando - Novembre Jaime Saint-Merat - Ulcerate Thomas Hedlund - Cult Of Luna
My favorite metal drummers Gene holgan - dark angel Igor Cavalera - sepultura Clive barr - Iron maiden Glen evans - Nuclear Assault Rat skates - Overkill
Would like to have seen Joey Jordinson near the top 10...the way he Tractor-beamed Metallica back to their raw roots when he played for them....RIP BRUH 🤟
@@RuthlessMetalYT Yeah thanks for verifying this list is worthless because you see some bands as "unworthy" of being associated with metal. Lars gets a honorable mention but Joey is "not metal". Nice joke.
Too many amazing drummers out there to pick a favorite! Steve ashiem should have been up too and so should Mr. Tommy Aldridge!! But anyways awesome video as always 🤘
Thanks for compiling and posting this. Key takeaways: 1. John Zorn and Mike Patton weren't wrong in their staffing choices, 2. Burton, Hammett and Hetfield weren't wrong in their personnel strategy they laid out back then, 3. I'm so looking forward to that Testament gig in May.
Dave Lombardo and Pete Sandoval #1.#2tom Hounting #3Paul Bostaph #4 John Deere.#5charlie benante#6gene Hoglan #7Gar Samuelson #8steve asheim,#9 Mike Smith #10 Nicko mcbrain.
When guys are this good, it comes down to a matter of preference. My favourites are Bill Ward, Ted Kirkpatrick (great to see him on the longer list at the end), Randy Castillo, Tommy Aldridge, Eric Carr and John Bonham.
Wait Neil Peart as Metal???......... Then you have to eliminate half of this list to make room for Stewart Copeland as he is one of the GREATEST drummers of all time!
Yes if we have Peart in this list then lots more hard rock and progressive rock drummers have to get on it. It should just be a metal list, much simpler and fairer.
Mikkey Dee is the most consistently powerful and headbanging drummer I’ve ever seen. He never lets up. Every show, all the show, he’s banging his head and the skins. Relentless!!

@@RuthlessMetalYT lol, okay!
Tommy is always entertaining to watch even back in Black Oak Arkansas. Carmine's work in Cactus and Blue Murder is just awesome.
Aldridge FTW!!!!
I can agree to this list. Maybe you can do a list of most underrated drummer
Charlie Benannte
Tom Hunting
Sted Howland
Aquilles Priester
Donald Tardy
Mick Harris

cheers
Nice, Cheers!
Yes, Castronova is a an outstanding drummer and vocalist. Nice mention.
@@Matt-xv2cp yes! His vocals on the Journey Through Time vids blew my mind!
@@steve.hoffman Ever heard of Hardline, 'Double Eclipse'? Neal Schon and Castronova, awesome album.
Wow, you named some of my picks and ONE I did forget. Deen on that second Cacophony album. Talk about taking things to a new level!
I missed Richard Cristy, Vinnie Paul, Igor Cavalera, Paul Bostaph, Nick Barker and Lars Ulrich. But great vid though! \m/
gotta vote 'em in. ;) Cheers!
Crazy how Cozy Powell doing the power metal drumming style in the 70s
Cheers!
Does not surprise me one bit that Cozy Powell was doing power metal drumming since Rainbow laid down the foundation for power metal/symphonic metal. Cozy's drum Intro on Stargazer is absolutely phenomenal
You and I don't always see eye to eye on a lot of topics. That's not the case on this one at all. You hit the nail right on the head with this one.
this was a vote so. ;)
@@RuthlessMetalYT my bad, I thought that was your order.
Cheers!
He was he's and will ever be better than all of em!!!!
Absolutely!
BEAST
Damn right!
Yes Sir! Cheerios
My favorite Metal drummers are:
Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel, Terrorizer)
Charlie Benate (Anthrax, S.O.D.)
Tom Hunting (Exodus)
Ventor (Kreator)
Igor Cavalera (Sepultura, Cavalera Conspiracy)
Reed St. Mark (Celtic Frost)
Just to name a few 🤘🤘🤘
Good stuff
@@RuthlessMetalYT Cheers! 🤘🤘
*Dirk Bruinenberg - Elegy, Adagio, Consortium Project
*Jason Rulo - Symphony X, Redeption
*Thomen Stauch - Blind Guardian, Savage Circus, Mentalist
*Ed Warby - Elegy, Ayreon, Gorefest, Demiurg
*Sean Reinert- Death, Aghora, Cynic
*Mike Terrana - Artension, Metallium, Avalanch
*Jörg Michael - Stratovarius, Rage, Mekong Delta
*Joe Nevolo - Shadow Gallery, Maegi
*Peter Wildower - Darkane, Pestilence, Time Requiem
*Richard Christy - Control Denied, Death, Iced Earth
*Matteo Amoroso - Athena, Vision Divine, Etherna
Etc.
Cheers!
I seriously think Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy should get an honourable mention. His jazz fusion influenced death metal drumming is incredible in my opinion🤘
What about Sean Reinart!?
Cheers!
Surprised there's no Mangini on this list - it might just be because he's very much a drummer's drummer but i feel like he deserves a spot here. Charlie Benante as well - he's an incredible drummer and I feel like he never gets the credit he deserves.
Yeah! I agree
yeah, there were only a few hundred votes so. Cheers!
Same with Tom Hunting from Exodus.
Right? Charlie is bad to the bone. Love me some Anthrax 🤘
Gene has been my favourite since I was a teenager but all of these guys are insane, great vid
cheers
RIP Ted Kirkpatrick from Tourniquet, glad he made the honorable mentions!
RIP
Damn! I had no idea he passed away. Fuck!!
R. I. P. Ted 😔
🎸 Amazing Incredible Drummers.👏👏👏🥁🎸💥
Cheers!
I don't know if Thin Lizzy is metal, but Brian Downey is the best. Rythmic and subtle.
cheers!
👍
This is a good list. I can mention other worthy drummers that I think are worthy of mention that aren't in the honorable mentions: Ingo Schwichtenberg, Thomen Stauch, Scott Columbus, Dave Mackintosh, Jorg Michael, Tim Yeung, Paul Mazurkiewicz, George Kollias, Daniel Erlandsson, Jaska Raatikainen, Scott Rockenfield, Raymond Herrera, Jason Rullo.
Cheers!
Cheers!
THE WAY HOGLAN GRABS THE SYMBOL WHILE IN PLAY IN INCREDIBLE

Great list, until #30 haha. Gene Hoglan deserves that spot for sure.
Just a few of my Honorable M's
Kirk Arrington-Metal Church(Kirk would make my TOP 10) the rest below in no order
Rick Allen-Def Leppard (Their 1st two albums)
Lee Kundrat, Robert Falck-Overkill
Nigel Glockler-Saxon
Steve Walcholz-Savatage
Gonzo Sandoval-Armored Saint
Stefan Kaufmann-Accept
cheers!
Great drummers here man!
Gene also played with Death I believe. Who’s that other guy from Rush? He was awesome! 😅
Cheers!
John Rutsy played on Rush's first album. Left the band due to health issues.
Great list!
Cheers!
Great list! I would recommend people check out Robb Reiner from Anvil. His style is a unique cross of heavy metal and big band jazz. His double bass is second to none and he has hands that would scare Buddy Rich!
yes sir, cheers!
Yes, Robb Reiner is an amazing drummer. I've been an Anvil fan from the beginning.
My 10 favorite heavy metal drummers (in no particular order)...
1. Alex Van Halen (Van Halen)
2. Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Blue Murder, King Kobra)
3. Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio)
4. Tommy Aldridge (Black Oak Arkansas, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake)
5. John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
6. Les Binks (Judas Priest)
7. Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden)
8. Vinnie Paul (Pantera)
9. A.J. Pero (Twisted Sister)
10. "Wild" Mick Brown (Dokken)
Cheerios!
I do think Vinne Paul needs to be Higher on the list. He started doing triple and quad foot rolls and then everyone started doing it
Cheers!
He was doing what Alex VanHalens was already doing that's why he's not credited for anything new
@@robertdefex3439 he made it popular amongst the metal that came after. As far as I know Alex did it only in 1 song and it sounded nothing like the way Vinne incorporated it.
My list. In no particular order.
1. Tommy Aldridge
2. Nicko McBrain
3. Bobby Jarzombek
4. Mark Zonder
5. Mike Portnoy
6. Vinnie Paul
7. Mikkey Dee
8. Charlie Benante
9. Deen Castronovo
10. Neil Peart
Cheers! 🤘🏻
I'm pleasantly surprised by the ranking of Mikkey Dee. I didn't vote for him, coz he's not one of those "classic" drummers, but he's the one whose solos never make me bored. And an all around top bloke. 👍
Yes Sir
Totally impressed by Miikkeys drumming!!❤
His groundbreaking work on for King Diamond albums is reason enough, add to that his part of Motorhead with somewhat simplified approach but he might be on of the most solid and consistend drummmers out there, I think...
Mikkelsen Dee kicks some SERIOUS ASS
If it's all about speed, then extreme metal drummers are the best. But to me, it's not how fast you are, but WHAT do you choose do beat. And from that point of view there is a clear winner, Mark Zonder. The guy who can keep the beat AND play a part, he makes all the songs much more interesting because it's never simple to follow, even a 2/4 or 4/4.
Cheers!
Ken Owen (Carcass) definitely deserves to be among the greatest metal drummers. In grind we trust. And also Mike Smith (Suffocation). Stay brutal.
Cheerios!
MIKE & HIS ORIGINAL BLAST BEATS!!! PIONEER!🤟🤟🤟 'SPECT DUE!!!!
actually a fairly accurate list, you never miss Ruth
Its not my list. Its the internet ;)
Really glad to see Cozy Powell on this list. He was a hard hitting beast like John Bonham and Bill Ward. A lot of modern drummers are more interested in speed than power, but the power was what separated hard rock and metal from pop and glam.
Cheerios!
Cheerios
Away - Voivod
Scott Rockenfield
Steve Wachholz - Savatage
Trym Torson - Enslaved
Lasse Pelkkonen -Skepticism
Giuseppe Orlando - Novembre
Jaime Saint-Merat - Ulcerate
Thomas Hedlund - Cult Of Luna
Cheers!
There's a certain amount of justice in Lars Ulrich being only #30.
And Justice For Lars
Cozy Powell and Clive Burr are my favourites!

Igor Cavalera - sepultura
Clive barr - Iron maiden

Chuck biscuits, Vinny Appice, Cozy Powell, Mickey Dee, Dana Burnell, Les binks. Speed doesn't = Best drummer EvEr

So true, blast beats sound great, but they're more about athleticism than musical talent.
Vinny is my favourite drummer of all time, so I quite agree with you here 🙂.
chuck biscuits underrated
Nick Mensa is my favorite on this list but all on list are awesome!

Dave Lombardo is the best ever ,10 x drummer of the year

Would like to have seen Joey Jordinson near the top 10...the way he Tractor-beamed Metallica back to their raw roots when he played for them....RIP BRUH 🤟
No, no rappers on this list.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Yeah thanks for verifying this list is worthless because you see some bands as "unworthy" of being associated with metal. Lars gets a honorable mention but Joey is "not metal". Nice joke.
Love the list. Personally I would move Peart to number one and keep the rest in order.
cheerios
Gar Samuelson 😢

Too many amazing drummers out there to pick a favorite! Steve ashiem should have been up too and so should Mr. Tommy Aldridge!! But anyways awesome video as always 🤘

Peart and Portnoy? I think your viewers don't know what a metal drummer is. Both of them were/are prog-rock drummers.
Maybe you didn't listen, I included hard rock drummers.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Maybe you don't know that prog rock isn't hard rock.
Thanks for compiling and posting this. Key takeaways:
1. John Zorn and Mike Patton weren't wrong in their staffing choices,
2. Burton, Hammett and Hetfield weren't wrong in their personnel strategy they laid out back then,
3. I'm so looking forward to that Testament gig in May.

hard rock and heavy metal, some people just don't use their ears.

When guys are this good, it comes down to a matter of preference. My favourites are Bill Ward, Ted Kirkpatrick (great to see him on the longer list at the end), Randy Castillo, Tommy Aldridge, Eric Carr and John Bonham.
Cheers!
So, why not Jeff Porcaro?
Hard rock n metal drummers
Mikkey Dee is the most consistently powerful and headbanging drummer I’ve ever seen. He never lets up. Every show, all the show, he’s banging his head and the skins. Relentless!!
