    As for my fave bass player it would have to be Lemmy a man I had the pleasure of meeting many times from 1981-1995. A true rock n roller who lived the rock n roll lifestyle. Really enjoy his playing with Hawkwind, acid rockers who often sounded metal especially with Lemmy on bass. Started listening to Hawkwind in 1972 and then read about Motorhead in 1975, but did not hear the first album till January 1978.Witnessed many Motorhead shows ( two shows in one night at The Danforth Music Hall in May 1981, could not hear anything but a buzzing ringing for the following week) between 1981- 2006. Geezer Butler is my second choice, got to see Black Sabbath in Dec. 1976 in Niagara Falls N.Y. Ted Nugent opening. Saw Rush New Years Eve show at Maple Leaf Gardens 1978/79 great show. Geddy's our hometown hero.

    This is an interesting topic because bassists are often not respected, or even belittled (Frank Zappa said some really stupid things about bassists). However, they are the backbone of any hard rock/heavy metal tune. Personally, I'd say my three favorites (in no particular order) listed here are Lee, Butler and Harris. I'd throw in (from the secondary list) Phil Lynnott, Roger Glover and Ian Hill (he understood how to keep things simple, but how to keep a song moving perfectly. Kind of like Ringo Starr in The Beetles). I'd like to add one name - Algy Ward, whose bass playing during the first two incarnations of TANK was pure thunder. Take it easy.

    Cliff Williams
    Steve Harris

    Happy to see Steve at the top, he's my favorite too. And I think Geddy Lee has every right to be on a list like this, I don't know why people are complaining. My top 10 would obviously have been a lot different. Some of my favorites that weren't mentioned include Ross Dolan, Roger Pattersson, Doug Keyer, Tony Choy, Jeroen Paul Thesseling, Dominic Forest Lapointe, and Steve Cloutier for his work on Obscura and From Wisdom to Hate.

    I didn't vote on any of this but a Top 5 bassist in metal who didn't even get a mention is Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne. Just look him up on TH-cam if you don't know who he is. Obviously this list includes older bands from 70s-90s so it's not a list of the greatest metal bassists of all-time but instead the greatest from a certain time period.

  • @jimmycampbell78
    @jimmycampbell78 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I’m confused when I see Geddy Lee on a ‘Metal’ bassist list, and then Lemmy is directly above him. Its like Neal Peart in the drummer list.
    Look there are prog and jazz fusion bassists who totally wipe the floor with the ‘metal’ guys on this list. So there needs to be clarity on what genre people can pick from.

    • @RuthlessMetalYT
      @RuthlessMetalYT  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @jimmycampbell78
      @jimmycampbell78 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RuthlessMetalYT I do think you should keep it to metal as in your titles- it just keeps it more simple and less controversial in my opinion. If you include Peart you open the door to classic rock and prog rock drummers and then if you include hard rock/prog/fusion bass players it opens the door to more talented players than are in metal, in my opinion. For example I could say where are Chris Squire, John Entwistle, John Paul Jones on this list, and go into classic 1960s and 1970s bassists. I could even say Paul McCartney. I would suggest keep it to metal guys from 80s onwards.

    • @rhythmandmoose
      @rhythmandmoose ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a poll:
      And of course he will be ranked higher than most. Just like Hendrix does on general guitar polls. Influence is a huge factorbon such lists and polls.
      Harris is a legendary figure in metal bass playing. Also Lemmy and Les have no common criteria either why they would be both ranked above Harris.

    • @jwelliott74
      @jwelliott74 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rhythmandmoose ok, so I’ll buy the influence through longevity, but I still think Lee, at the very least, is the more amazing player, and I’m not even a huge Rush fan. I gather it’s a poll. That much was clear, and as a multi-instrumentalist and lifelong musician, I was maybe looking for something a little more qualitative. But it seems Harris and Butler are both on for the same reasons, not for technical ability, or being the voice and keyboards as well as bassline, but just due to being around for so long? I still think Lee wins there, but I’m obviously missing something.

    • @lassemaja8382
      @lassemaja8382 ปีที่แล้ว

      The band with the biggest following will get the most votes. Steve is a great songwriter but his bass playing isn't anything special.
