- Peroneal Tendonitis
The three peroneal muscles, now called the fibularis muscles, are muscles at the surface of the outside of the lower leg. They serve to turn the foot out (evert) and push the foot down (plantarflex). The tendons run behind the anklebone and connect the muscles to the boney structures of the foot and ankle. They can become inflamed or torn during acute trauma or during periods of overuse. Rarely do these tendons become inflamed or torn without damage to other tendons and ligaments, so please assess other issues as well.
Common causes include inversion ankle sprains, breaking into a sprint while off balance, or simply overusing these muscles resulting in inflammation. Other causes include poorly fit or worn footwear, excessive pronation, habitually running on embanked surfaces, excessive twisting of the ankle, and poor circulation along with malnutrition during activity. Older individuals become more susceptible to these injuries as the tendons lose their elasticity with age.
Peroneal tendonitis typically results in pain on the outside of the foot below and behind the anklebone. Symptoms also include stiffness, swelling, or a burning sensation around the back of the ankle and outside edge of the foot.
KT Tape can be a great help with pain and speeding the healing process by increasing circulation, providing stability, and relieving the pressure on this inflamed and painful tendon. Make sure to rest the ankle and ice after any activity as well as take anti-inflammatories during the worst times. Consider using this application in combination with the ankle stability application in order to avoid further injury and provide excellent stability without the downside of wearing a brace. If pain becomes severe or the ankle becomes discolored or very swollen, please seek additional care.

Thank you. Your simple taping method is already working after just a few days. Way better than seeing my doctor, neurologist, ultrasound, x-ray, CT scan and other tests only to be told that it could take up to 18 months to recover, if at all. If only I came here first, I could have saved myself $1,000+ and lots of time off work.
I felt immediate relief after doing this taping method. Thank you! I'm now able to do exercises to further stabilize and strengthen my ankle. Literally was limping around before I taped, and now I'm walking nearly pain free. So cool.
I know this is an old comment, but how long did it take you to heal? I tore this tendon a year ago, and I still experience popping at the ankle bone.... did that ever go away for you?
Yes!!!!! This is what I needed.
I'm a dancer and I have 11 days of shows in a row starting tomorrow.
I suddenly had pain up the side of my leg just above my ankle and was like "shit shit shit shit!" Because I still have to dance and I'm playing an extra roll because one of the dancers has a concussion and can't remember the choreography.
This video is saving my life
My peroneus longus *rupture* healed doing this (my rupture is along the outside edge of the foot). Saved myself all kinds of surgery and/or booting costs and downtime. Combine the taping with the use of a *stiff* orthotic. I continue to use Powerstep Originals. The tape *replaces* your tendon, or takes the load off it. You will get better and better at it. You can rub in some topical anti inflammatory right on the tendon and the heat under the tape keeps is sinking into you during the run. Be sure the topical dries well before you put the tape on it *will* stick. The stiff orthotic acts like the bottom of a boot. Took me 5 months: I no longer need use the tape or topical. Almost zero pain. This video was so useful to me and KT Tape itself is an incredible invention.
Thats a pretty bold claim. Im out here really hoping you're not lying. I just tried taping it myself and I'm not entirely sure I did it right but will keep practicing
Amazing how much this helps! Went from constant pain to no pain in 2 weeks. Been dealing with it for months and this is the only thing that worked😀. Thanks
Thank you so much for putting this up. I’m recovering from a horrid sprain and it’s been 6 months of slowly getting better but I’m still limping and in a lot of pain. This wrap feels wonderful…
I’m hoping it does the trick for me. I’ve had horrible pain for 4 months. Finally got the peroneal tendinitis diagnosis from a 3rd doctor today and he said kt tape should heal it in a month. I’ve been severely depressed thinking I would be in chronic pain the rest of my life unable to walk.
@@mama66333 how are you now? I just got back from the doctor and he said the same thing to use kt tape so I’m gonna go buy some. Hope this works
@@NmmmMmmmmmmmmmmm How are you now? Did the tape help?
@@AndyGray157 mine wasnt tendonitis its called peroneal subluxation. Still clicks so if u have any questions just ask
It will give you support, stability, pain reduction and increased circulation to speed heal time. All of this should allow you to run while you're healing. Let us know how it goes!
You can apply topical anti inflammatory (try Voltaren) under your tape. Just let it sink in and dry. Your tape *will* stick and the heat under the tape helps the topical sink in all during course the run. Also complimented by a *stiff* orthotic. Simply a miracle product.
had PT 3 years. Now got PT shoe insert whichmakes massive difference. This video is also big revelation. Thank you. My injury diagnosed correctly.

How are you doing now?
@@mordov11 it’s been 2 years with very little improvement. I barely walk and at times it gets worse again. It’s very frustrating. I stopped using the tape a long time ago. It didn’t help. The thing I have found most helpful is fascia release massage. I just have to keep doing it though. It never completely heals. It’s chronic.
@@mama66333can u tell me what caused it in the first place?
@ I really don’t know what caused it. It’s been almost 3 years. I have a chronic illness that causes constant profound fatigue. So I don’t move very much. My best guess is when I had to use the pick up truck for 2 weeks and when I got out of it I had to drop about 2 feet and I think that stretch to my feet that my feet were used to caused it. I went to 4 different foot doctors and 4 different physical therapists. It has improved. It is no longer burning. But it’s chronic and my feet will never be fully healed. If I have to stand more than half an hour cooking I have to sit on a rolling stool.
The thing I found out about in the last 8 months that has helped is a massage gun. I’m annoyed no one told me sooner. I use it on my legs and the bottoms of my feet. I only wear the most cushioned sneakers all the time. In the shower I wear cushioned flip flops. These things have helped more than the K tape, physical therapy or doctors. Good luck! I am sorry you are a fellow sufferer.
Chris~Thx for the great application instruction. KT tape has helped me so much with old sports injuries coming back to haunt me!
Thankyou. This application instantly removed all discomfort from my foot and ankle.
Holy cow, I just tried this. I was somewhat skeptical, but it really does relieve a lot of tension and pain! I don't know if I'll be able to run during my recovery, but even if I can't this should help me heal faster. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much! I overdid it and hurt my ankle on the last walk of the Camino de Santiago. Taping my ankle like this is helping a lot.
i have been using this method for two weeks and the pain is all gone. i havnt decided when ill try to run again. shouldn i keep taping?
I rolled my ankle running and I got this problem and it's working surprisingly well it doesn't feel as much pressure or feel very painful when I shift my weight between front and back of my foot this is great!!!
Now my question is: can you tape for two different injuries on the same foot? (I have a turf toe and peroneal tendinitis) would the tapings interfere with each other? or is there a way to combine them?
I actually can’t believe now much difference this makes. I’ve been out for 4 weeks and was getting pain walking about. But this helps so much!!!
Why would you not start the tape (anchor) at the insertion of peroneal longus? I do it in order to follow the full path of said tendon.
Is this the same way you'd tape for peroneal subluxation? I can't find anything specific to this condition.
No. All the colors are the same. We just wanted to differentiate between strip one and strip two.
That's the whole idea behind the tape, to keep you running while you heal. Go for it and let us know how it goes!
Yes! In fact we have many dancers in professional dance companies that use it. Let us know how it goes!
Thanks! This really helped. I have trouble with my ankle from time to time, but this is moving the healing process along quickly.
can't believe this tape actually worked!..Thanks!
Sweet sweet relief!! Wraps, braces, other tape... But finally relief with this application of KT tape.
Hi, I have left peroneal tendon subluxation. Does this taping method help keep the tendon in place?
Did you try the original cotton or the KT Tape Pro? The Pro should hold up much better in water.
So there are two videos of how to apply kt tape for peroneal tendinitis, both performed by you, and they're different to one another...?
Super helpful. I have tendinosis (rather than itis), and with the pandemic can't get in to PT. Going to give this a try now that I know how to properly apply.
Great application tips. I really need to take a course in kineotaping. I have peroneal tendonitis. Sadly we didn't learn this in PTA school.
I just purchased the KT PRO EXTREME..... I affixed it on my ankle region and along the way to the pinky foot.... When I roll my ankle inwards and outwards I can still feel the sharp shooting pain I had before affixing it..... Seems like it hasnt worked to relieve it....?
Can this taping method be used for peroneal tendon subluxation?
Did you ever get a reply or try it?
Yes!!
You're welcome! Thanks for the great post. If it's not too much trouble, would you mind leaving a review on Amazon? Thanks!
Is this application appropriate for ankle pain caused by muscular hyperactivity in Parkinson's Disease? Is there any other method of application that can inhibit fibularis activity?
I've had a problem with my peroneal tendon, off and on since '08. I tried this today and was shocked at how much relief it provided. I'll be taping up like this regularly. The only draw back; when the dog and I jumped in the pond for a swim the tape came off rather quickly.
My pain is is just above the arch of the foot?
That's awesome! Thanks for the comment!
Can you please post the link for this tape. Thanks
I would start with this one. If you don't get the relief you need I would recommend posting your question on our "ask an expert" forum on our website and one of our pros will get back to you with a custom app.
have had this pain for 4 years. am on my 3rd podiatrist have tried 3 different braces and am on my 2nd set of custom orthotics... am giving this a shot now...
Well?
How does this tape work?
what KT TAPE product is this exactly?
The tape is not long enough, the 2nd piece, with 50% stretch to cover outside of foot where the pain is. How do you modify for larger feet?
Would this application be correct for pain right up the back of the hall . The tendentabove heal and some pain ip calf
I'm a sprinter and I've had trouble with my left ankle for a long time. I won't say that it's anywhere near a cure, but my ankle does feel more stable during training.
What's the purpose of the yellow strip?
Is there a difference in the two colors of tape?
My longus brevis/or longus peroneous tendon inflammation!!! I hope this achieves!
I was wondering if I could run with the tape, or should I let the area completely heal first... what do you think?
Is there a specific book we can use to follow these applications?! Do you use the dr Kenzo Kase method or the Australian One? 🤔
Check out our website for written application guides, you can find them in pdf for each taping method!
@@KTTapevideos Great! Thank you ❤️
how long do you keep the tape on before taking it off? like do you have to change it daily? how does showering interfere with wearing the tape?
I'm suffering from Peroneal Brevis Tendinitis, with localized pain behind metatarsal 5 and below the ankle. With my pain located more on the outside rear of my right foot, is the application shown in the video appropriate for my condition? Thank you!
I say yes because it helps me and mine is metatarsal 2 pain and ankle pain. This pain helps tremendously to keep working my shifts at the hospital. MRI says the same diagnosis as you.
Can you put tape for Achilles tendonitis and have more tape for peronel tendonitis on top?
Could this taping method be used for lateral cecs
What's a friction rub ?
My pain is under ankle and to the left and up a bit on foot. I have no clue what it is and it happens all the time on both feet. It can happen with walking or just standing ugh. Sometimes it’s so bad I can’t even put weight on it . 😢
Combining applications is not a problem. Go for it :)
What type of tape was used?
i have pain right under the ball of the ankle where the front of the foot arches
I currently do dance, and i have been having a lot of pain in that area. So can i use the tape and still dance or no?
I've got pain all up the lateral side of my leg. Will this help or do u have another video which will point me in the right direction?
so does it help to wear these while doing your sport..or are these mainly for resting
if you're already injured you don't keep doing the thing that injured you. It's an overuse injury so it's better to rest.
Yes. Visit our website and check out our store locator. Just type in your zip code and it will show you where you can get it near you.
@THEcrayonMELTED12 Try the posterior shin splints application.
Was pretty skeptical about this. Then I put the tape on and I can tolerate walking!!
I have a ankle which, underneath the 'ball' on the outside of my foot... when i lead my ankle outwards there is little resistance and a gap forms clearly just below the 'ball' ... its well healed and not painful but that movement leaning on that side is uncontolled... and effects balance in parts. any advice please? sorry for my lack of technical knowledge.
can you tape for Posterior Medial Tendonitis and Peroneal Tendonitis at the same time?
My pain is closer to the knee, but it’s still on the side on the muscle. Barely feel ankle if anything at all.
How often do you need to tape it? Do you tape it 24/7?
I'd recommend you visit our forum on our website and ask an expert. You may need a custom application.
Whats your website
Try moving the app higher to cover the site of pain. Reply, email, Facebook, or forum message us if that doesn't quite get it.
Great. I am gonna test that.
I am a speedskater and i
think i have some trouble with this.
Hi I have pain and I think it is from unsupportive shoes. It is on the ankle on top of my foot by my ankle It hurts with pressure. My shoes have little arch support. Would this help if combined with an OTC arch support added to my shoe? Just looking for thoughts.
I've been in pain for 9 months now..does this really will let me be able to run again while it heals at the same time??
I have a bump on y foot I think it may be swollen and it hurts when I step on it and flex it anything for that? Please say yes
My problem is with peroneal insertional tendonitis. What is the best way to tape for that? I have had bouts of plantar faschiitis so I try to tape for that with additional emphasis on the outside , but it is not helping that much. It really worries me that it is not getting better. The last time I had a problem like this I shredded my peroneal longus and tore the peroneal brevis on my other foot and I do not want to go through that again. .
Do you think using ankle brace vs taping, which one is better for a recent 3 months ankle hurt? Still got a bit of swell right now, thanks!
thank you for a very clear demonstration. It helped greatly.
My podiatrist told me I have tendinitis but I'm trying to find out what kinda tendinitis I have.
I have bad pain on the inside part of my foot right below the ankle and along the side of my foot .the doc wanted to put me in a boot 4-6 weeks and if not opt for surgery . He took x-rays and an ultra sound of my pain area.
Really any sudden movements or too much walking it causes ALL of pain some days worst then others. I'm 29 and also flat footed
ask him to refer you to physical therapy; there are things a PT can do that he can't
As physical therapy assistant student. You sound like cardinals signs of weak plantar support. In short the pain, is from stress from weak muscles that wrap posterior from the lateral calf. This leads to the foot not being able to push off over time, and become "flatfooted" at the arch. Also known for being very irritable without management. Immobilizing could cause more harm once removed due to atrophy and shortened tissue.
What if your pain is on the inside of your foot instead of the outside? Mines on the inside underneath the ankle bone, but I'm not sure what's wrong. It hurts on inside and outside of my ankle, and at my Achilles. Any advice?
It was painful on my arch trying to jog with this application. I underpronate and everytime my foot landed it felt like my arch was pulled causing arch pain.
Help I have a bump on the the outside of my foot mid Center and I think it's tendinitis is this possible ?
Does this work for a arch sprain?
Visit our "ask an expert" forum on our website to find some good applications for your arch.
Gerardo Cruz Hello I like this video, these advices are so helful and easy to practice.
. I also found some helpfull tips for swelling in the ankle with pain and it
was Moorack Fast Ankle Miracle - find it on google if you want
I have popping in my ankle and it does not hurt will this heal the popping?
No
The tape does stick better to skin that it does to itself. That being said, it should stay on for multiple days. Send an email to support@kttape . com and they'll take care of you.
It works! Duct tape worked in a pinch so I could get to the store to buy the human-grade tape.
Can it help with shin splints? My right lateral fibula is hurting so I've stopped running this week but I want to get back to it asap. I've got a marathon on March 2! Help.
Yes it can. We've got a video for shin splints. Check it out and let us know how it goes!
#stluciestrength There are several components to curing for plantar foot. One resource I discovered that successfully combines these is the Fergs Foot Formula (check it out on google) definately the most helpful resource that I've heard of.Check out the amazing info .
Thanks, for how Long can I use it?? Also can I take a shower with the tape?
I been in pain for months 😩
I was a runner for many years, ran through the pain of this and ended up with a complete tear, had a tendon graft to repair it . Would suggest if anyone has symptoms of this that they ask their doctors for an MRI to make sure you don't have a partial tear which ultimately if not diagnosed early and treated will end up being a completely torn tendon if you continue to use. Now am unable to walk at any pace without ankle swelling up like a bastard. Take care of your bodies.
Brad Daniels I just started feeling pain Tuesday, but had a week of training and an EXTREMELY difficult race (one of the hardest hilliest courses in the nation, not joking) and ran 6 miles today, and I am pretty sure I have this. The pain is bearable, no burning or tearing sensation but it still hurts and is tender to the touch. I have three weeks left of training as an alternate for cif/state meet. Should I continue to train? It's my last year. When you completely tore it, how was the pain? Was it unbearable to walk?
What wound up happening to you?
Dana Focardi
I've had pain around the outside of my ankle for years, I'm a sprinter and I spend lots of time at the gym doing squats, deadlifts etc.
I've seen podiatrists, had a gait analysis, had an MRI, X-rays etc. and nothing has permanently fixed or properly diagnosed the problem. At the gait analysis I was told that it was the result of bio-mechanical imbalances in my lower leg caused by weak glute meds. I spent months strengthening the glute meds, my ankles and calves. It went away only to return. There's never any swelling or tenderness to the touch, it's just a dull pain which I sometimes wake up with and comes and goes. The pain really comes when I try and hop repeatedly off the problem ankle.
I'm trying to strengthen it by running and training (after which it's usually sore for 24-36hrs) and then resting to let it recover.
Would this help with pain on the outside of the foot? Except my pain is closer to my heal, right were the first strip of tape goes. Can someone help me?
look at plantar fascitis taping.
you need x ray and to do simple excersizes like rolling your foot over a can
+Puddlez From The Mystery Vlogs yea I did there was nothing in the x Ray but it's Iselin disease
Thank you! I really have annoyed the dickens out of the tendon, and the moment the second bit of tape went on my ankle went "ahhhhh!"
Super helpful video!
Thank you so much! This has been a huge help
mine is a dull ache around the bone that sticks out. hurts more behind when going down stairs. if i start running then it quickly turns to burning. and the whole ankle may feel hard. is this the same injury? its been a month! not had one this long. forgot to mention if ive been for a "test run" the bone also hurts like a bruise
Not sure if this is the same injury or not, but you might want to see a sports physical therapist for specific help.
Yes, most likely the Brevis and/or Longus under the ankle bone. Very painful injury...
Would you recommend this as support for a transverse tear of the peroneal brevis tendon? I am currently post-op from right knee menisectomy and awaiting surgical repair of left peroneal tendon in the future, but was wondering if I could apply tape for left ankle support prior to surgery. Thank you very much
That's awesome. Thanks for letting us know!
I would recommend visiting our website and checking out the "ask an expert" forum. One of our pros can customize and application for you.
It sounds like you might need a custom application. Visit our website and check out the "ask an expert" forum and post your situation. One of our pros will come back with the right app for you.
Do any stores sell these?
Literally everyone on my gymnastics team has this that's what gymnastics can do to you lol😂😂
I believe it. I got this my first time in a gymnastics gym after landing on an uneven surface.
HOLY IM TAPINF IT SO I CAN COMPETE 😩
