- Movie detectives gather all the suspects into a room and reveal who the killer is. It’s a hallmark of mystery movies! But what if there’s another way? What happens when the guilty person is never revealed?
2018’s Burning and 2009’s The White Ribbon are uninterested in answering “whodunnit?” because they delve into deeper questions than that. These two movies teach us how to subvert tropes and break arbitrary screenwriting rules.

Ambiguities of the Art Cinema by Robert Self (full quotation) - “Where the classical narrative cinema endeavors to foreclose an unstable reality by sub-ordinating spatial and temporal systems to the necessities of narrative logic, the modernist cinema attempts to liberate spatial, temporal, graphic and rhythmic dimensions from narrative altogether and accentuates the process of signification itself.”

about the burning movie (adapted from a haruki murakami short story called "barn burning"), he is defo a psychopath. having a POV style narrator just makes it even more unnerving and less about making it ambiguous. when one is not entirely sure that one is talking to a psychopath yet all the red flags are quietly screaming inside one's head, that's basically the approach that the movie did. it doesn't really make the evil less true just because it wasn't a god's eye view narration style.
Hey! Enjoyed the video but I just wanted to give you a heads up just in case you weren't aware - all of the audio that was recorded while you were on visible on screen was muffled pretty badly. The entire outro + points during the introduction for instance.
Thanks for the heads up!
This channel is about to explode. Keep working!
When I was a child, a lot of children were still ritualistically beaten/caned. It gave me a really dark feeling of terror in the pit of my stomach. It wasn’t the violence that was the worst part. Somehow it was the coldness, cruelty, control and obvious enjoyment that the parent, always the father, got from the ritual.
It was obviously a twisted fetish, masked as “discipline“. I just didn’t have the language for it as a child.
You're extremely promising man. I really enjoy your content :)
Thanks so much! That means a lot to hear.
You have an audio problem...sometimes voice comes through one ear only ... Otherwise superb man....
What? He was a sadistic serial killer! For fucks sake.
