Metallica literally saved my life with this song. I listened to this track multiple times a day for weeks to give me the strength I needed to beat my meth addiction. As of writing this comment, I am 13 months and 10 days clean, holding a job, and working on buying my first house. I'm me again. I can only imagine where I'd be if I hadn't discovered this track and gotten the metaphorical kick in the balls it gave me. As cliché as this comment may be, seriously, if you're reading this and you are struggling in a similar way I was, it's not too late. You are so much stronger than you think. I’m about to rant about how much I love this song. Everything comes together so well and Metallica truly is telling a story through their lyricism. Even down to the instrumental.
The song is obviously narrated by the substance, towards the user. The most remarkable part to me is the bridge before that last “Master, Master”
Sounds to me as if the person has now reached an overdose and is falling into the pits of death with that last scream. The tone of the guitars riffs guides you through the user going through the steps of a near death experience and as the music slowly progresses back up to the basic tune of the song as if the user is now coming back to life now trying to live without the drug and now going through a phase of rage.

It’s just very interesting and impressive to see just how Metallica produced this song. This is good music. It really portrays the demonization of drugs and just how they can control you. Well done

I dug into the whole thing of Eddie playing this in stranger things season 4 and honestly I think I figured it out. During the riff at 5:40 if you slow down the clip you can see that Eddie plays a hard F sharp power cord. As well as when Eddie is shredding out you can sync the finger placements in the EXACT SAME order as the master of puppets solo. To further prove my point you don’t think Eddie would be listening to Europe no obviously like Anthrax and Metallica. And lastly we see Eddie hit the two hard strums just like in master of puppets case closed.

shinki451 no, I'm talking about Master of Puppets. E1M1 At Doom's Gate uses a variety of songs, including MoP.
I look at all the people in the 80's calling Rock and Metal "Satanic" and I laugh. Metallica is a brilliant example of this as most of their songs dig deep into sensitive topics, especially drugs which are romanticized and fetishized by other bands and artists.
And considering that this is a song about how drugs are bad, and especially how it's not stupidly cringey unlike with D.A.R.E. or "Just say no" that never worked. This song gets it's point across and the people rejected it.
Hell it could even work as an anti addiction PSA as well, it doesn't have to apply to drugs. I work for a casino in Canada, and while we didn't have a mass drug pandemic, we did have a gambling crisis in the 90's, specifically in my city of Winnipeg, suicide rates were awfully high especially in what was considered a small hick town so they mostly blamed it on Manitoba Lotteries Foundation (which is why they changed it to Manitoba Lotteries Corporation later on) and my dad would know what horrid things that gambling can do to people as he's worked at a casino for 30 years now.

And yet addiction nearly destroyed Metallica and James Hetfield some 16 years later. Singing about it is one thing...learning from it is another.
I already discovered this song way back 2018 and it is one of the best songs ever. This song got me to metal music. Now. I already listened to a lot of metal songs and it is one of my preferred genres. METAL FOR LIFE.

I actually think it would be better for new people to start with a little calmer songs like nothing else matters or sad but true then they'll probably get really into it. Never the less that's an amazing album!

As someone who has dealt with drug addiction, mostly heroin this song explains it so much. The drug is your master & you're just its puppet. Itll cut your strings it controls whenever it gets tired of you & wants to be someone else's master.

The whole song is a metaphor for drug addiction and this line specifically refers to “chopping breakfast” possibly referring to something like cocaine or another form of drug in front of a mirror to see just exactly what you are doing to yourself and how one is spiraling further into addiction. This person here is saying they quit doing drugs because of this line alone

🥀Valkyrie🥀 you could be right but also a lot of people use a mirror to put their coke, heroin, whatever on and divide into lines cause it's easy to snort a line off of a smooth surface like a mirror and then each line is usually a good hit. You don't waste anything that way.
